I also thought he’d disallow the goal, many refs side with the defender in those situations.
It was a 50/50 shoulder barge so wasn’t a foul and the pundits on Sky and Quest all agreed it was NOT a foul.

Did make me wonder that if Sharp had shot and scored, then the linesman would have put up his flag for a foul
But instead Sharp choose to pass, the delay was slightly too long for the linesman to then put up his flag.

To legitimately should barge someone, the ball has to be within playing distance and it’s not. I can’t see if it’s in his back so I’ll assume it’s shoulder to shoulder, but it’s a foul.

There were a few ot those challenges he let go yesterday so fair play to him for being consistent. There were a couple against us that I thought he should have given. So to not give that against Billy was good consistent refereeing.

Allowing a player who has committed a foul to play on and benefit from a breach of the laws of the game is ‘good refereeing’?. Dear, oh dear, Boo. That’s as absurd as suggesting Monty could play football.

I didn’t think it was a foul, but it was borderline. I’d certainly not have been apoplectic if it was the other way round. The defender had got on the wrong side and Billy could put a shoulder in within playing distance of the ball. Only one winner.

The more interesting question is what would be given had the roles been reversed? A striker goes sprawling waving his arms about, the crowd screams penalty, the ref get crowded.... More likely to hear the whistle I suspect.

It's a blatant foul. As said above, if it had been the other way round there would be multiple threads on here chastising the referee. We got lucky in what was becoming a tricky game.It wasn't a 50/50 ball. Defender was protecting it and Billy wouldn't not have got to it.

No way ,stop sanitising and taking all the physical contact out of football ,they didn't even appeal for it. Billy wanted it more than the defender ,which is ironic in itself as they model themselves on big hard bastards.
Mike Dean would have danced about until the cameras were on him ,given the free kick and probably booked a couple ,at least this referee had the bottle to ref properly.

Strictly I don't think it was a foul, nowadays I think it would have been given by the vast majority of referees throughout the world. The defender was as weak as piss but there'd have been major issues if it had not been given if it was at the other end.

I suspect that the "view from" will be dominated by comments on the issue.

It only becomes a shouldercharge when one player is knocked off his stride, i.e. he loses, otherwise there'd be nothing to see. He'll be as embarrassed as anyone when he sees the replay of that. The other thing that everyone seems to have missed is that he had a yard start on Billy and was outpaced which gave me a wry smile.

No chance it was a foul. It was a fair 50/50 shoulder charge. Fair play to the ref for not blowing and fair play to Bolton for not crowding the ref, no complaints from them, least of all from Jack Hobbs.

We see it happen time and again when defenders block attackers to allow the ball to go out for a goal kick when winding time down. Never given as a foul. I can see the argument as to why it could be given as a foul, but it’s a contact sport. He used his strength to knock the defender out the way going for the ball. 50/50 I suppose

Having said that I’m still amazed the ref didn’t give it. 99 times out of 100 the ref bottles that and gives the defender the benefit of the doubt.

It’s not about sanitising the game or stopping physical contact. It’s not about what he did, it’s about where the ball is. It has to be within your playing distance and it’s not. He’s miles away.

I’m glad it wasn’t given obviously, but it’s a foul!

I expected the ref to give a foul as he gave some ridiculously soft freekicks against McGoldrick earlier. If it had been given as a foul fair enough, but it's not an obvious wrong decision to allow it. They're both trying to block out each other, the Bolton guy lost.

It was Keith Stroud, the same ref in the bizarre 2-2 draw with Brentford a few years ago. As soon as i heard his name i thought "oh crap", but actually thought he reffed the game very well. Bolton may not agree though.......

Ref was consistent. And credit to him for that.

Earlier on in the second half Billy, or someone, was played into space (space, not outer space - there's a difference) in their half and was basically barged off the ball. "It's a man's game, you big Jessy." No free kick. Game continued.

Billy's easily canny enough to have clocked all this.

And the Bolton defender/defence didn't really complain.

Another very good goal.
