I gave you a substantial one man, do I need to compartmentalise every few sentences to suit the limited threshholds of those who can't be bothered to make an effort
That’s a bit arrogant. Are your posts really so good we should ‘make an effort’? Maybe you don’t realise how many of us read the board on our phones and how off putting dense, unseparated text can be.

I’ve read Checkov so it’s not like I’m not prepared to put the effort in but when I see a long post with no paragraphs I just scroll down to the next one.

Only a bit arrogant? ;)

I've never made any claims about the quality of my posts, that would be inward looking and completely inappropriate. It might seem an odd thing to ask, but why, due to it's length, is an above average paragraph off-putting? I've read Checkov too and enjoyed his work a great deal, regardless of the length of a paragraph (did you write to Checkov's publisher and request shorter paragraphs, or did you accept the author's preference because this was his intention?).

Point taken about a reader's attention-span, but it's never in my thinking whether someone might or might not prefer something on the shorter side. If someone, in this case yourself, chooses to pass on a particular post, so be it. i really have no feeling about this one way or another.

There, separation for separation's sake. Hope it pleases those who prefer something shorter, but can't promise to maintain this level of attention in future.

I didn’t make any point about attention spans. I simply said that it’s difficult to read unseparated text on a phone.

You can have my quota. :)

Also. I really dont get people being irked by corrections. Are all teachers cunts for telling little Bartholomew hes mistakenly used a b where it should have been a d? Are some people excluded from learning?
Feel free to correct me on any grammar and punctuation mistakes btw.

Interesting topic.

I had a bog standard type of education - secondary modern, then many years later I chose to go to what was then the Psalter Lane Polytechnic, which was referred to as tertiary education (so already loaded as far as levels of education go). Generally I have a preference for using and understanding the whole point of language and communication.....but, what I don't allow myself to do is become what some have called 'a grammar nazi'. I still find myself having to correct spelling and punctuation, and lessons are still learnt as a result, but what I do know is that there are those who struggle with language in the same way that I struggled with maths, science, british constitution, and still do. Should I castigate someone because they genuinely struggle with a subject, or should I attempt to understand that struggling is actually a form of social disablement, thus it should be a reason that I reach out and attempt to help them. I know that in some eyes that might appear wooly and patronising, but I don't differentiate between this and attempting to help someone who is homeless and has lost the capacity to get their feet on the first rung of social improvement.

I think most of the grammar corrections are quite light hearted, mine are anyway.

You're probably correct.

I understand both sides of the argument, but I lean towards understanding, and thus using, language as it was intended. Once you grasp the need for punctuation and spelling a whole new world is yours to enjoy. In it's written form English can present quite an obstacle, but this also contributes towards it's enjoyment in the hands of a master craftsman/woman. For myself, reading a thoroughly commanding piece by the likes of Zweig, Shaw, or Vidal is enough to convince me that the time spent on understanding the why's and wherefore's of language was time well invested.
