Connor Sammon modelled himself on our Ashley then ?
Part of the infamous 2004-5 season where we just missed the playoffs (as usual) as Warnock failed miserably to build a forward line beyond Andy Gray (who scored 15).
As well as Ward and Gray, Warnock also tried Barry Hayles, the corpse of Tommy Johnson, Luke Beckett, Paul Shaw, Jack Lester, Danny Cadamarteri, Jon Forte, David Johnson, Steve Kabba, Billy Sharp, Danny Webber and (in the last home game) Chris Morgan up front.
It was like Clough's 2014-15 but with forwards not defenders.
Ward was injured at Wigan after playing the first 10 games, scoring once. Having lost 3 in a row before his demise, we lost only 1 of the next 17 games. He managed only one further sub appearance that season. Crap and injury prone.
Why have you included Webber and Kabba in that list?
Because they both played up front that year.
The promotion year you mean? I thought you're listing Warnock's failed attempts?
They played in the previous year (2004-5) too. Webber came in at the end of the year and Kabba came back from injury.
I remember Warnock bemoaning his lack of funds but then saying ‘if I had a million pounds, I’d sign Ashley Ward’ who he’d just signed for nowt (I believe). I thought that this was a great bit of management to boost Ward’s possibly flagging confidence and morale but it also made me glad we’d not given Warnock a million quid.
I only really remember the Leeds goal from Ward and he was probably lacking in both fitness and motivation by the time he reached us. He’d had some big moves and decent contracts and had a couple of years where he looked really good. That Ashley Ward didn’t play for us. And he wore the wanky red short kit which should never be allowed again.
So are they failed attempts or not?
I'm just listing everyone he tried that year up front. that's a lot of forwards.
It's good to see that he's no longer a vain person eh?He was just terrible. Used to waste half of his weekly wage on hair gel.
