I actually think the refs this season have been pretty good. It’s been the linesmen who seem to have struggled.

Saw an interesting article the other day that officials are currently undergoing courses for the VAR roll out next year and the linesmen are being encouraged to let contentious stuff go as VAR will pick it up and I think some of this thinking has come in a bit early.

The linesman in front of the South stand was fucking useless to, he wasn't watching the game at all, he was jus watching the shit ref, and the copying him, didn't have a scooby what he was doing, disgraceful.

Immediately after the guy hit it, it hit Billy, so I think their argument was that it can’t be a backpass if the last player that touched it is an opposing player. I don’t know the rules well enough. It seemed a clear backpass to me, but at the same time, if the last player that touched it is an opposing player, how can it be a backpass? I can understand the confusion, though, saying that, he’s a professional referee and I’m not, so you would think he wouldn’t need to fanny around so much.

Absolute incompetence from him and his 'team' throughout the first half and 15 minutes or so of the 2nd half. As the OP says though, after the non penalty and their goal the reaction was so downright hostile, from fans, players and manager alike that he panicked. Had he continued in the same vein he would have had a riot on his hands so he tried to redress the balance and started giving us the decisions.

The atmosphere felt like the Warnock days again yesterday, maybe even the Basset days at times. We pull it off every now and again and it doesn't half make a difference. It fires up our players, intimidates the opposition and focusses the minds of the officials. Let's have more of this on Saturday lads & lasses!

I haven't seen a fully competent lino at the Lane for about 5 years now. I honestly don't know who trains the fuckers because they seem completely focussed on calling offsides and nothing else. They can't even call a throw correctly these days without looking at the ref first.

Although a deflection doesn’t nullify an offside call so it might not affect the backpass either. Who knows? The ref yesterday may or may not have

Couldn’t actually see anything in the laws of the game about deflections affecting whether a keeper can handle a backpass or not - it says it’s an indirect free kick if the ball:

• “has been deliberately kicked to the goalkeeper by a team-mate”

News to me if so, I always assumed that a deflection meant it could be handled. In this case it definitely looked like the derby bloke was deliberately passing it back to the keeper.

Now if the centre back was playing it to his fellow center back and it hit Billy and deflected back to the keeper, then I could buy into that not being classed as a backpass.

What I can’t buy into is how the linesman and ref deemed that a guy faced with an open goal a yard out would inexplicably throw himself to the floor for no apparent reason.

I haven't seen a fully competent lino at the Lane for about 5 years now. I honestly don't know who trains the fuckers because they seem completely focussed on calling offsides and nothing else. They can't even call a throw correctly these days without looking at the ref first.

I think we were told it's the linesman's job to let the ref decide on throw ins and then indicate the ref's decision.

If it's unclear to the ref then he can "consult" the linesman - that "consultation" usually takes the form of a hand signal <insert joke> rather than full on round table negotiations. And if neither can decide then the ref basically makes his best guess.
