Coutts

Sorry lad, but the magic has gone, maybe it’ll come back but he is not the change we need to replace Fleck.

This. I don't see Coutts and Norwood working as a pairing regardless of form. Neither do the job Fleck does.

Coutts looks so off the pace and slow though. I'm worried he'll not be able to come back from this one. He may just need time but time is against him.

I've said on here before that i know from personal experience it takes a long time to recover from such an injury and you inevitably lose a yard of pace (although i must have lost several!). If he's back to anywhere near his best by the end of the season he'll have done amazingly well but don't hold your breath.

May be worth giving Norwood a rest and giving the Coutts, Fleck and Duffy triangle a couple of games back together.

Agreed.

For all the Hollywood stuff Ollie does, for which I am hugely appreciative, he is prone to the all too frequent basic fuck up.

That said, it is clear PC is not as sharp as he was. Yet.

But they are a strong outfit, and they out Sheffield United us tonight. Beaten at our own game on the night.

Onwards :)

Coutts is shot based on that performance. He spent ages building up his level of performance with us, it will take even longer to get back to that standard IMO.

Funny I said this the night of the injury and was criticised for being a, well, cunt basically. I really hope he does but it won’t be easy and he’s certainly not what we need right now.

Done.
I'm sorry but he can't run.
He can still cast a nice pass, but so can my subbuteo players, but unfortunately, he just isn't the "ooooo-e-oooo" Coutts we all remember.

Mobility was never his strong suit. That West Brom team we’re quick and mobile and strong and when they aggressively pressed or broke at speed they looked a league above. We don’t have a player that could have negated that. I think the idea was to try and keep possession to stop us being over run.

Folk love to over sensationalise absolutely everything these days. Probably attributable to the social media era we’re living through. “Best night ever... Best meal ever... The worst... Disaster” are fairly typical comments I see on my newsfeed. It’s all bollocks.

I see this reflected on here. We lose a couple of games at the start of the season - we’re in a relegation battle. Coutts has a couple of average games - the magic’s gone.

Could it not just be that he’s a player who’s had a lengthy lay off and hasn’t yet had the string of games he needs to get back to full fitness? Maybe he is done, maybe he isn’t. From what I’ve seen he probably isn’t.

Well at least he tried to shoot with his third touch.
That is all that was worth remembering from him.

Starting him tonight might have worked as he could have happily passed the ball about with little pressure in the first half hour, but the way West Brom approached that second half, it was never going to be good scenario to bring him on.

I do not see the point of introducing another slow player to the squad that is so massively lacking in pace. He offered nothing when he came on and was a step backwards from a miss firing Fleck in my eyes. It be surprised if he ever returned to the levels that we saw before the injury (and quite a while of underperforming before Wilder).

We desperately need pace in midfield and up front. We won the ball three times on the break in midfield in the second half alone and were easily caught by their retreating defenders within 10 yards each time.

The squad is aging badly and there is no coming back from that without new signings and we all know how that works with our owners.

I still think a pre-injury Coutts was a better player than Oliver Norwood. Unfortunately Coutts now is no longer Coutts as was. I can't imagine he'll ever be as good again, not after a second major injury.

Norwood is a more spectacular player but he's just not as reliable, nor does he dovetail with Fleck so well.

I see no reason to panic over the Coutts situation. We brought on a man who is returning from a potential career threatening injury, and he came on for Fleck. He was never going to play the Fleck role, that much is clear. You could also see his confusion at times as he would drop to pick up familiar positions, to see that Norwood wasn't too far away from that spot already.

Coutts will get better, Norwood needs to find a little more consistency, but how much better are we than Evans and Leonard, Christ! The issue we have now is lack of depth behind Fleck and Duffy.

Put Coutts in and move Norwood forward. Norwood makes goals for us, like tonight and not for the opposition ,like tonight ,we get John Fleck we all know and love back and we play good football ,the wing banks get balls to run onto therefore the striker get different kinds of ammunition.

It might be an unpopular opinion but think we ought to try the Coutts-Fleck-Duffy trio again. Stick Freeman back in and see if we can maybe regain some of that fearless fluid football we played the first half of last season? Think Norwood’s probably earned a rest.

Nostalgia.
It very rarely works in football.

He wasn’t particularly mobile before the injury, he’s even less so now. Tonight wasn’t the first time he’s bottled a challenge either so there’s obviously something not right psychologically. Anyone asking for him to replace Norwood either doesn’t want to acknowledge what they’re seeing or can’t see it out of sheer loyalty.

As bad as Fleck was tonight, that change effectively killed our chance of winning the game

Coutts came in at a point when we were failing to hold onto the ball, we were sitting deeper, the strikers were isolated and he was completely ineffective so far back. He also showed that he has no pace for the breakaway.

But i still think he did better than Fleck in that 2nd Half.

Norwood is dangerous sat in front of our back three he gives the ball away far too often in areas where it will hurt us. I'd play him further forward too where if he does give the ball away it is not such a calamity, he might just hit a few into the top corner too.

Their first goal started with Fleck bottling a challenge in their box ,before Norwood gave them the killer pass.
