It’s agonisingly obvious. We lack that bit of star quality that makes all the difference. How many times have we either matched very good sides or dominated them for long periods and come out on the losing end with a late goal?

Nothing wrong with that overall performance tonight. Largely very good albeit at the end of each half we faded. Likely due to the energy that went into the prior 30 minutes or so. Can’t criticise them much tonight. All it served to do was highlight that final bit we’re lacking. Sadly the bad news is it’s something you have to buy and it’s not cheap. I fear we’ll let this opportunity pass us by.

Up to the board as far as I’m concerned. If they’re happy to stand still, this group won’t budge. If they want to kick on and really achieve something they have to dig deep. January will decide the club’s future, we’ll never have a better chance.

Do you think we will actually spend owt in January?

We’ll be told that we are punching above our weight and doing really well for the budget we have and be told to be happy with that - it’s so frustrating to see us so close to being a top side in this division, I personally don’t think we will invest and we will see the same nearly performances until the end of the season - long term Wilder will get fed up and move on.

Completely agree. I can tell you that in my opinion, all of what you predict will happen. It’s sad but that’s just the culture of the club, we are a nearly team and it’s because of the club’s attitude. Nothing will ever change.

This team will finish a position or two higher than last year (8th/9th) only because I think they’re slightly more experienced now and mentally tougher but year on year it will become more difficult to squeeze that out of what we’re working with.

As I say it’s up to the board/owners and I can pretty much guarantee which way it will go.

I’d love us to finish 8th or 9th but I don’t share your optimism?.
We were piss poor in the 2nd half and a 38 year old ran us ragged and dictated the game!!. I don’t see us getting the much needed quality in January!!. Our co owners have put a stop to that with their playground squabbling!!.
I see us finishing about 12th based on current form!!.
Wilder will walk at the end of the season and we’ll be fucked. Who could blame him?. UTB

I reckoned we'd finish 10th again in pre-season.

On the train after the Brentford game, the question went around again and to some derision (everyone else was gung-ho and said automatics/playoffs), I said 8th, which in retrospect (in games since) would be an amazing achievement IMHO, as it could quite easily be 8th from bottom if no money is spent in January, and the current lethargy continues with no fresh blood or added depth to the squad.

The one complaint I'd make about the performance is that they looked like dead men walking at 2-1. They completely threw in the towel.

Nah. Beaten by a better team, running out of options, and unable to respond doesn’t amount to throwing in the towel. Adkins’s teams did that properly.

We don’t know how to be savvy and get through difficult spells. Brom’s composure and professionalism once leading in the game is something we could learn from. But then they’re individually a class above us.

Derby next home game. Which exciting way will we lose that big game? Sharp misses a pen? Egan scores an own goal off his arse in the last minute?

Heads were down for the last few minutes. No-one bothered rousing themselves at all. They looked like men waiting to be hanged.
