Got MOTD on, not for any reason but Sunday night, beer or two. Noticed that the Spurs fans appeared to be separated from the Arsenal fans by a gangway and a line of stewards. No empty seats, no netting, what appears to be no paranoia from the Met about how to police this game. I don't think this is because they are all well behaved middle class Metropolitan types, and we're all unreconstructed northern yobs. Not sure if there's a steel wall outside the Emirates (I doubt it), but clearly it appears that it's only a combination of us and SYP where such extreme steps are felt necessary.

Players behaving worse than fans

I said this before the Leeds game & i want to defend us because i truly believe it is ott. Especially when the Manchester derby biggest game in english football doesnt need it. But i also have to be realistic & unfortunately as in everything in life a small minority always spoils it for the majority. Few days after the sheffield derby i came across a picture from social media. when we needed for fans to be on there best behaviour & prove a point. a small minority couldnt control themselves. To be realistic the picture below was like Christmas came at once. Because when the police bosses want justification for why do you need them extra funds/coppers/stewards/metal barriers. Policemen show them that & bosses give them a blank cheque. & we have to pay the price. Horrible but true

It’s not South Yorkshire (Not got a clue) Police.

Policing in the PL is paid for by the PL, not the club, so no one cares for segregation as they can just stick extra people in the stand instead of having a no man's land.

If we were to return to the PL every seat will be available for sale.

A picture speaks a thousand words... and raises a thousand more questions, which i think is the point you're making.

When was this, this season, last? What incident sparked the need for the policeman to raise his baton?

I said on another thread that the segregation pre and post match often adds to the drama. Not saying there wouldn't be any trouble, we've had so few games against our neighbours over the years, that our minority wannabe hooligan groups look forward to having a face off with the police in between.

I think its very hard to compare ourselves to the Premier League derbies. Manchester, Liverpool and North London derbies all seem to pass off with very little trouble. Thanks to many factors like football tourism, European football, playing each other at least twice per season (sometimes much more when they play each other in domestic and European cup games) that the animosity seems reduced and sanitised.

Even the Birmingham v Villa Derby is hard to compare as i don't think the fans are the same anymore.

Back to your point though, SYP and SAG seem to justify their presence in large numbers by citing the high potential for trouble. However, i see no proactive measures from them or the clubs to try and reduce this. All we ever see is restrictive measures:
- Previous purchasing history (500 loyalty points)
- Pubs closing early or not even being allowed to open
- Night games or lunchtime kick off
- Road closures, Wall of steel
- Additional segregation inside the ground

Forget TV money, there are larger issues for the clubs. Playing a Sheffield Derby on a Friday night is not conducive to encouraging families to attend, its not proactive. Why not have the game at 12 or 3pm on a Saturday and have fan zones for kids before the game. Beam back the game to the away team.

Allow fans to mix before the game, at least on the way to the ground and don't corral them.

I go back to MK Dons away when we got promoted from League one. A huge police presence after the game and i spoke to one copper (he'd been seconded in from another force) and he couldn't believe that we were so well behaved. I said "what did you expect? We've just won promotion after 6 years and we're here to drink, celebrate and enjoy ourselves" His pre match briefing had pointed out that we were a trouble causing set of fans and I'm sure photos like the above will have been circulated, perhaps with some pyro in them to show how badly behaved we are.

Fact remains that ourselves, Leeds and Pigs all travel in big numbers and we have a reputation. Whether that reputation is justified or if its enhanced based on over zealous policing as a result of our reputation is unclear.

There needs to be a rethink on Policing our big games as well as how we behave as fans, otherwise the segregation will continue

Good post Swizzler. However your point about the lack of trouble at Manchester derbies is a little wide of the mark

Living on the wrong side of the hill I hear about it regularly.

That picture could be chucking out time on West Street but I don't see 'hate walls' etc. going up there. Where are the pictures of Slovak Roma in Page Hall where the police fear to tread?

Cheers for that (got to the link eventually). It doesn’t alter the point about SYP though, perhaps supports the need to try alternative proactive policing

Aka Roma Blades

True enough. Maybe, and this is groundbreaking thinking, SYP could get together with GMP over a brew and some biscuits and learn a few different techniques. Or is this going too far?

Talking of Roma, the Liverpool fan (Sean Cox from Dublin) who was attacked by a Roma fan outside Anfield in April suffered brain injuries and will never be the same again. No 'hate walls' could have prevented that and - as usual - no sign of the coppers, as there weren't when the Liverpool fans launched pre-publicised attacks on the Man. City and Villareal team coaches.

Cracking post Swiss, and it reminds me of the philosophy of my old HR Director at work: treat people like kids, they'll behave like kids, treat them like animals, they'll behave like animals, treat them like grown ups...

Sadly I think we're a bit too soon for that with our porcine neighbours. But give it another 5 years of x2 games a season and we might be sufficiently used to playing one another...

As for Leeds? I'm not sure that lot know how to behave!!

In this fucked up world the guy who threw a banana skin on the pitch will more than likely receive a custodial sentence rather than the usual fine and banning order for the guy kicking someone's head in.

Absolutely right, in the companies where i've had managers who've treated me with respect and given me freedom i have worked the best, the same applies to football fans. Treat them like animals and they'll behave that way.

There will always be a few that take the piss at work and at football... When i was working in Switzerland where everyone had a good deal, we got 6 journey rail tickets given to us to make it easier travelling to the airport. You just asked the secretary when you needed a new one. It saved us all from submitting expenses. There was one guy, out of 120+ people that was literally getting a new one every week and he was only travelling once or twice a month. Turned out he was giving them to his wife so she could use them for her shopping trips to Zurich. The company then changed the whole system and restricted it to one per month, any more and you had to expense it. At the time i was taking around 14 trips to the airport a month so it became a nightmare

Are Leeds or Millwall fans any worse than us? I know a few decent Leeds fans, but they don't travel

to the best of my knowledge that was either before or after the Sheffield derby on 9th november

I always feel that 95% of home fans & fans going away are fantastic. credit to the club, they go to watch & support their club. with zero interest in causing trouble. but there are always going to be handful that for some reason are trying to prove their masculinity by wanting a punch up.

Great metaphor.

The lack of common sense when it comes to policing always amazes me. I lived in Manchester when Citeh got back in the PL after years away and there was carnage for the first few derbies but now there isn't. Surely someone from SYP is asking for advice from the GMP and I'm pretty sure Friday night kick offs and steel walls aren't the tips being given.

On a related matter, I still find the difference between our jovial, beer seeking mid week away support and our bellend infested weekend away support something of a paradox. But guess that's the same for most clubs...

When we played Spurs away in the cup there was barely any segregation bar a gap and a metal post.

Root Cause: SYP cannot control football matches without putting in place ridiculous measures.

They're only let out at weekends. Except raul he must be on the run

While i agree syp havnt got a clue it seems in policing the sheffield derby at either the lane or swill, i honestly couldnt imagine a single line of stewards between both sets of fans in the ground!

Is this because we are all animals or is it perhaps the truth that we're made to believe courtesy of SYP

Give it another couple of years when we're both mid table championship teams and it'll settle down. Right now we've got 6 years of angst to burn off... It's still quite novel.

Sods law means we'll get promoted or they'll be relegated this season and we'll be starved of it for a couple more years...

They did all these roadblocks / steelbarriers etc and still plenty of lads had it away with each other after the match.

A friend of mine said that if you walked a couple minutes out of your way everyone could walk straight into Leeds fans at St Marys roundabout.

It just defies belief at times how SYP organise these games

I certainly wouldn't want to be one of the stewards in that single line, even though they get a huge wedge for doing it

Not all animals but both clubs have that minority what when put in that sort of situation will struggle to behave themself.

The difference with the sheffield derby is its affordable to most, not many football tourists as such and everyone hates each other. My 2 closest mates are wednesday fans and anywhere near a derby i honestly cant stand even talking to them about football, they do my head in!

Not many football tourists have 500 loyalty points.

At the Manchester /Liverpool /London derbies the vast majority of fans either side of the single line of segregation are season ticket holders. They have a lot to lose if causing trouble. Until we get promoted we will have randoms occupying said seats, nightmare to police
