1000 for the Division Four match ? What you talking about ?
Wigan's average attendance at the time was around 4000
The attendance that day was 8001

Their next home game after playing us was against Northampton Town - Att 3996
There certainly wasn't 4k Blades there . I went to most of the away games that season. Remember we were the big attraction in that league fans would turn out to see us rather than any other game. Doesnt happen now due to TV .There was plenty of space in the small away end thay day. We didnt have fans in most parts of the ground either like we did at some games like Scunthorpe and Bury.
Fans always used to exaggerate how many their own team took away home before the ticket only rule came in.

Yeah ok
4000 extra Wigan fans turned up
7000 extra Mansfield turned up
3500 extra York City fans turned up
3000 extra Torquay fans turned up
7000 extra Peterborough fans turned up, even though they didn't against Bradford in the game immediately before for a similar promotion match

Hartlepool as well, they were lucky to get 1800 for most home games that season but I suppose an extra 2500 of them turned up because it was us.

Almost every club had more than DOUBLE their average attendance when they played us, and it was nothing to do with more of them turning up to see Sheffield United

You are suffering from Wednesday delusion if you think your figures/guesses are accurate. By your logic there were 5k pigs at BDTBL this season

Away allocations mean shit. I remember Darlington giving us 2k tickets and we ended up taking 15k
There were very few away allocations in the 80's. In the division 4 season you just went in whatever turnstile you could get in the ground. The start of that season the followings weren't as large which I assume was partly down to the events of the previous season

I didn't go to Wigan in the fourth but went two seasons later, if we had the same away end that day then it was a fair old size what the away fans got, all the terrace behind the goal that included the big grass bank behind, half the terrace up to the players tunnel and a section or two of seats in the stand.

That grass bank must have been during the winter.

More of our fans turning up to the Sheffield derby is not the same as more Wigan, Port Vale, Peterborough, Mansfield and Hartlepool fans turning up because they're playing us. They didn't because they weren't interested.
If anything it is you who is suffering from Wendy delusion by making that statement. You sound like "They've only come to watch United"

Fact is, at most of United's away games we had as many at the game as home fans, and in some cases many more

We started on the bank ,Kenworthy scored a pen I think at that end and we ended up on the terrace ,large parts spent dodging stones. Quite a lot of trouble before and after rumoured to be Rugby league fans ,I always recall everyone looking through peoples front windows at the results ,one woman turned round in shock to see about 20 Blades up against her front window. One bus had a stripper on it ,she did quite a bit more than strip.
