So we meet The Millers after over four years since our last match – and just one point will see Chris Wilder’s Blades notch up 200 league points with Chris in charge.

Rotherham were denied a win at Blackburn on 10th November by a late Bradley Dack equaliser but have lost only one league game in the last eight (including six draws).

After many years of playing at Millmoor, in The Millers moved to Don Valley Stadium for the 2008-09 season and played there until New York Stadium was completed in 2012.

Games at Millmoor were usually, er, interesting such as being in the packed Millmoor Lane beside the ground as the friendly locals greeted us with bricks and other similar missiles.

It was on 6th October 1979 when United beat Rotherham 2-1 at Millmoor in the Third Division with goals by Jeff Bourne and Barry Butlin. United fans on their ‘kop’ – The Tivoli End – caused a pitch-side perimeter wall to collapse.

On 21st April, 1984 United were promotion-bound in the old Division Three when they played away at Rotherham. The game was drifting towards a 0-0 stalemate until Bob Atkins scored a late screamer, sending thousands of Blades fans at the Railway End into raptures. The season ended with The Blades in third place, pipping Hull City (who also had 83 points and an equal GD of +33) by virtue of having scored more goals. That season ended with Hull needing to win at Burnley on 15th May by three goals to overtake the Blades. Hull were 2-0 up at one stage, but couldn’t get that elusive third. Remembered on S24SU here. Keith Edwards scored 33 goals for us in the league that season. Including all 4 at home to Gillingham and two hat-tricks. He also scored four in the FA Cup and two in the Milk (League) Cup.

Recent-ish meetings:

Relegated to Division One in 2016-17 and promoted back to The Championship last season means we really haven’t played The Millers very often in recent years. Our first meeting was in 1951 and Saturday is only the 31st league meeting between the clubs.

Full history v Rotherham

Our League record v. Rotherham is:

Home: P: 15 W: 10 D: 1 L: 4 F: 28 A: 19

Away: P: 15 W: 7 D: 5 L: 3 F: 28 A: 18

The last time we met Rotherham, we won 1-0 at Bramall Lane on 4th April 2014 in League One:

We had lost the corresponding fixture at The New York Stadium earlier in the season 1-3.

These were grim times indeed for The Blades. This defeat was David Weir’s sixth game in charge and he only had four more games at Bramall Lane before Chris Morgan took temporary charge for three games before Nigel Clough took charge. The Blades would finish this 2013-14 season in seventh place in Division One – seven points outside the play-off positions. Rotherham however finished in fourth place and would gain promotion to The Championship after beating Leyton Orient in the play-off final at Wembley (2-2 a.e.t., 4-3 on penalties).

Happier times all round on 16th September 2003 when Neil Warnock’s Blades trounced The Millers 5-0 at Bramall Lane.

The previous season, United had suffered triple heartbreak in the ‘Triple Assault’ season. In this season (2002-03) The Blades triumphed 2-1 at Millmoor on a rain-soaked Friday night game – 28th Feb. 2003 – shown live on Sky:

On Tuesday 16th March 2004, United played out a 1-1 draw at Millmoor in front of 9,793. Jack Lester had put the Blades ahead early in the second half with a penalty. This game was in League Division One – the second tier. It would become ‘The Championship’ the following season (2004-05).

For me, one other game against The Millers stands out. On Saturday 22nd December 2001, United played Rotherham at Bramall Lane in the old First Division (now The Championship). 22,749 saw us play out a 2-2 draw with Patrick Suffo scoring a stunner at the Kop end. (this was three months before ‘The Battle of Bramall Lane’ when Suffo played his last game for The Blades).

Championship Table:

The Blades are currently in fourth place, while Rotherham are 19th.

Form Guide:

Based on the last six league games, The Blades sit in 15th place – just above Rotherham in 18th.

The Manager:

Paul Warne joined Rotherham as a player in 2009, where he played over 250 games. With the resignation of Kenny Jackett on 28th November 2016, Warne was appointed caretaker manager and became a permanent appointment – on a one-year rolling contract – on 13th January 2017.

Significant other:

In 1983, Rotherham United stalwart Paul Stancliffe (‘Stan The Man’) joined The Blades and would play 278 games before being released by Dave Bassett in 1990. Here is Paul defending at home to Bristol Rovers on 3rd September 1988. United won this game 4-1 in Division Three and it was the first home game of the 1988-89 season, the excitement reflected in the crowd of…9,586

I was at the 3-1 loss at New York Stadium in 2013, the only thing good about the day was a decent pint in a boozer near the train station.

Edit: The Prince was also at the game and a load of Blades lads were wearing tea towels on their heads, for a laugh.

Does anyone know of any footage anywhere of the game at Millmoor in 1979 ?

Is that Sam Garvin the leader of the Park Brigade in the 1920s in your avatar CHL?

If so, he was a prime suspect in the murder of Plommer at Princess Street - as he was there and then allegedly jumped on a tram straight after the incident and assaulted someone else in the Bull and Oak on the Wicker to try and give himself an alibi (the two Fowler brothers ended up hangin instead at Armley despite pleading their innocence). Nasty piece of work was Garvin.

That's a shame . Here's a job for you Silent. Can you find any pictures from the game in question ? ( if of course you want one, or you can just tell me to get fucked if you like :) )
Afraid not, I remember the match was being played in heavy rain. David Ford got a hat trick.

Sam Garvin is related to my paternal grandmother's neighbours.

1985 I think. League cup at Millmoor we won 3-1.
Joe Bolton stood on the edge of the box, watching the ball ping-pong about. Ball came to him and Joe Joe Joe Joe Joe Joe (that was his chant)
belted it back in. GOAL. Turned on his heels toward us, big grin and waved his fist.

Sam Garvin it is,well spotted Weasel . And yes, a thoroughly nasty piece of work he was . Mind you, there were a few of that type in 1920s Sheffield to keep him company and I'm just reading about them . I read J P Beans book a long time ago and I've just procured a copy of another author's work that I'm currently devouring .

I think we've got our wires crossed here mate . I'm referring to the game when the wall at the Tivolli end collapsed . It was 2-1 to us I believe and I'm certain it wasn't pissing it down .

Sorry. Dont have the photos. I was playing football regularly on Saturday afternoons from 1979 to 1986

I bet he chortled, in Arabic, at that!

A great work is Sheffield Gang Wars - JPB worked with my brother and sadly died unexpectedly a few years ago. Plus - he was a Blade. RIP.

I always remember being at Millmoor in April 1984 and an old bloke being stood near me saying "Go on, Atkins, lad" before the last minute winner which sent us into raptures. We also had another goal ruled out earlier as someone had run offside - it would have counted nowadays.

I also remember going there in the League Cup 1st round 2nd leg in August 1989. Their fans were shouting 'Reject!' at Paul Stancliffe, who if memory serves gave away a last minute penalty which led to their winner.

Mark Dempsey was playing for Rotherham at the time. His dad was the window cleaner at our office and gave me plenty of stick about it. He didn't like Dave Bassett because he had got rid of his lad.

Bob Atkins' winner that 3rd Div promotion season was a great memory .I can see him now as time was running out with his back to goal , suddenly pivot & strike the ball into the top of the net. It was one of the best , most welcome goals I have ever seen , & sent us into raptures. Coming from a player who'd had a pretty unspectacular career with the Blades it was a remarkable moment.

A more recent memory for me was John Cofie’s superb strike in that pre season friendly. I knew at that moment that we had unearthed a gem who would fire us to promotion

n this season (2002-03) The Blades triumphed 2-1 at Millmoor on a rain-soaked Friday night game – 28th Feb. 2003 – shown live on Sky:

A beauitiful ball threaded through in atrocious conditions to win the penalty.

Not bad for a 'traffic cone'.

I have mentioned this before, but I will repeat as it's topical: Revolution Snr was present at Millmoor on 13 December 1952 when Rotherham had their all time record attendance - 25,170 - for their home game against United, who of course finished Champions that season.

The ground was absolutely rammed, and my Dad, aged 12, was one of the many boys lifted out of the crowd to escape the crush. He watched the whole game, along with hundreds of other boys, sitting on the touchline at one end of the ground.

My Dad will also be at the game this weekend. He is now 78. He does not plan to sit on the touchline.

I also remember going there in the League Cup 1st round 2nd leg in August 1989. Their fans were shouting 'Reject!' at Paul Stancliffe, who if memory serves gave away a last minute penalty which led to their winner.

I was at that match, must have only been my 3rd or 4th away game ever. Their kop went absolutely barmy when the goal went in (Bobby Williamson?).

My sister was going out with a mad MIllers fan at the time, he was straight on the blower that night winding us up. Only time I've felt genuinely scared at a match that one, thousands of fans being herded through the claustrophobicly narrow MIllmoor Lane and the rozzers had the bright idea of blocking the exit of it with a police horse as more and more fans piled in unawares from the other end. Even as an 11 year old kid I clearly remember thinking how stupid and reckless an act it was, especially coming just months after Hillsborough.

Remember going to the Lane in 1980/81 when they beat us 2-1 on their way to promotion and our relegation. John Ryan scored a screamer for us from what seemed about 40 yards at the time, but after seeing the clip, was more like 25.

21:05

Went to the home game on Boxing Day 1983, Tony Philliskirk got 2 and King Keith scored a brilliant free-kick in a 3-0 win.

Went to the game in April 2014 at the Lane, which we won with a late Ben Davies penalty. They had a full strength team out and were cynical to say the least with rent a gob, Steve Evans, as manager. We played a lot of kids as we had the cup semi-final coming up. Seem to recall Dimaio and Otis Khan making their debuts. The ref must have warned them about 3 or 4 times for wrestling Maguire in the box at corners but they continued to ignore him and eventually he gave us a penalty. Of course Evans whined about it afterwards but it was their own fault.

Living in Wath between 1959 and 1974, I was brought up among quite a few different footy fans at school, where it was a mixture of Rotherham, Barnsley (the obligatory Man U), South Barnsley and just a very few Blades. Certainly no London clubs (no TV or Prem) and no Liverpool either as Bill Shankley had only just started working his magic. Early 70's there were a few scummy Leeds fans due to their relative success.

As for the Rotherham fans, if the Blades weren't playing, I used to pop along, mainly Tuesday evenings and stand on the old Tivoli end with my Millers mates. I've never counted the games up, but seen quite a few in my time. Saw Nuneaton Borough in an FA cup replay and there was a daft Nuneaton fan shouting "cadbury" at the front. Not understanding accent nuances, I realised years later he was actually shouting "come on boro" - fucking brummie accent !

Remember seeing Rotherham play United (Currie/Woody days) in a county cup game - from memory we won 2-0 or 2-1, and reckon there was 12,000 in the ground that evening. TC was just a magic footballer - but we had some very good players in those days too.

In those days, Rotherham used to kick off at 7.15pm - quite unique, not sure anyone else did, as others always kicked off at 7.30 - not the 7.45 that we generally have now. Any oldies know why it was 7.15?

Went to the pre season friendly at Rotherham to open their new ground - it struck me having good seats, plenty of space and good viewing - it's well designed for what they needed, but for Championship football it's probably a bit small in capacity. Isn't their chairman (the lighting man) a piggy fan btw? Seem to recall that he supported them as a kid.

But the biggest memory is the "Bob Atkins" game for numerous reasons. Nice sunny day, Blades everywhere in the ground - we were in what was the standing bit of the main stand - well, HALF main stand as it only just over half way along! Even at that level, you'd be pushed to see a better individual goal than what Atkins scored that day. He received a ball on the chest about 12-14 yards out with back to the goal (Railway end), spun on a sixpence and hammered it with his left foot on the volley. We all went mental and it was surprising how many Blades were all over the ground. A great footballing memory - and a pretty decent season too.
It also (sadly) reminds me of a pal Brian J who I used to play football with on a Sunday and go to games with, who died of a brain tumour at 51. He was best man at our wedding and as nicer person you'd ever want to meet, taken from his family and mates far, far, far too early - Brian, you are sadly missed.

So as to the opening post - "Memries of Rotherham" will always mean something to me beside being betwixt Wath and Sheffield and just going off on a tangent, and none football related - their used to be a great record shop - bought many of my early soul singles after "listening" to them in a booth (only the oldies will know what I mean here). There was also a large snooker hall above the shops right in the centre of town and at the bottom of a hill. I can't remember what it was, perhaps there are some on here with a better memory, who may remember the record shop and snooker hall?

Nope. The only times we played Rotherham in the County Cup when Currie & Woodward played were:

8/5/71 (A) We won 4-0 (David Ford 3 & Gil Reece). Crowd: 5,069
29/10/74 (H). 0-0 but we won 4-2 on pens. Crowd: 4,154
16/9/75 (H) We won 5-0 (Woodward, Guthrie 2, Currie, Field). Crowd: 3,222
2/3/76 (H) 1-1 draw (Woodward). Crowd: 3,915
29/4/76 (A) We won 2-1 (Guthrie 2). Crowd: 4,281

Hmmm.......will have to think this one back - could it have been another game then?
my memory from those days is normally quite good - we defo won and it has to be before 74 and again it was when the Millers played "come on without, come on within - you'll not see nothing like the mighty quinn" tune on the tannoy.

perhaps my mind is playing tricks!

Maybe Fulwood Blade was thinking of the 2-0 win (Reece, Colquhoun) in July 1970? It was a friendly match and I was there too.

My only ever trip to Millmoor was the 2-2 draw in December 2004 where we blew a 2-goal lead.

My seat was on the back row of the stand at the side of the goal and I physically couldn't sit down as there wasn't enough leg room (tbf this is essentially true on our Kop today, but at least those seats are plastic so have a bit of "give" :)). A steward kept telling me to siddahn until I pointed this out. A very weird ground and kind of glad they don't play there any more...

Which game was it when Kevin Blackwell was a pundit in the Sky Studios, just after he'd left us for Leeds, and we spent most of half time calling him a wanker? I'm sure that was at Millmoor?

That 1-0 win really miffed off Steve Evans didn't it! Played a very young squad as we had Hull at Wembley the next game. Was expecting a defeat if anything that game.

Remember the 5-0 like it was yesterday, and we beat Cardiff 5-3 the game before (or after). 10 goals in 2 games!

I was there in the first game at the NYS with my ill-advised tea towel on my head. Got plenty of bemused looks as me and my dad played football with them all the way back up the hill after the game. Was a cracking pub crawl down from Kimberworth though.

Will have to settle for a drink elsewhere this time from the sounds of it!
