Extremely refreshing to see us attempt and score a few.

Wardy and Evans both look to hit it when the chance arises and Keith has got a fantastic hit on him, although I understand he disappointed at Derby when the spaces opened up.

Makes such a massive difference to the success of the team and he mood of the fans in my opinion. Prior to this season, other than the Jag strike against Boro and maybe one or two by Gillespie I cannot recall any excitement in this department since Browny left. There must have been a few but I'm struggling to recall them.

Why does it make a difference? I watch football in part to see players do what the average man in the street cannot do. Over last 2 years I barely saw any of this - yes the players were fitter but the entertainment on show was dire. This season I just sense a small change in the mood of the club, awakening from the dark days of Robson and the utter boredom last term under Blackwell who has finally understood that pace, youth, skill and a bit of athleticism is the way forward.

Let us hope Wardy is back in action as soon as possible

Michael Tonge could take a pretty good long range free kick. The one against West Ham that nearly broke the crossbar on it's way in springs to mind, as does the one against our nearest and dearest.

*cough* James Beattie *cough*

Apologies folks - I'm talking primarily about long-range strikes from open play.

Jags against Leeds?:D

Browny against Wednesday?:D

Jags and Brownys goals were 6 years ago! Great strikes as they were, it kind of proves Micalijo's point that until this season we weren't really producing those kind of goals. here's hoping our new vein of form continues!

Treacy likes to have a go with a long shot .
Burnley had alot of joy with them last season their goals against Reading in the semi and us in the final all came from shots outside the area.

Burnley scored 4 goals in their play off campaign last season

3 of them from outside the box

The Burnley players were not afraid of having a go.

Burnley are Premier League

Talking of Burnley, I remember your namesake Djaffo scoring a pretty good goal against them several seasons ago. At the kop end at the beginning of the second half. Put us 2-0 up in a 3-0 win. Jagielka scored the other two (and both of those were pretty good as well). A very good performance which I think came a week after the infamous battle of Bramall Lane.

One longe range effort that sticks in my memory is a David Frain goal. Sometime in the eighties, kop end last few minutes of the match, unleased a scorcher that flew in to win the game. Possibly v Sunderland.

1/11/86 - last minute of the game. Sunderland went one up in the first half through Bennett, Beagrie equalised half way through the second half. Frain came on as sub with about 5 mins to go and got the winner.

I nominate Mel Eves' goal v Leeds on 23/3/85 - but (and it pains me to say it) the all time best I have seen at the Lane would be Mel Sterland for Leeds on Boxing Day 1989. A free kick at the kop end. It looked about 40 yards out, but went straight in the top corner :-(

I remember that goal. It seemed to dip and swerve, and was a cracker. The game itself was a thriller as well. End to end, Sterland's being the opener, then we scored two goals pretty close together to go 2-1 up, and they equalised early in the second half. Don't know how it remained 2-2. It could easily have been 5-5. A game befitting of the top two in the division.

That goal and the strike at the sty are what made that man my all time Blades hero.

Legend.

I even had D'jaffo 12 on the back on my shirt!

Darren, who scored a screamer for us against Forest (probably in the 90s) completely against the run of play. I think we won 1-0 and I can remember thinking we'd been battered by them for 90 mins and got away with it :)

I think Gannon scored a belter against Forest in the early 90s. That might have been the same game as one of Lake's though.

Could well be. My memory is truly shocking. Did we win it against the run of play?

To be honest I've only seen it on old videos!

My guess is that if it's the early 90s and we won then it will have been against the run of play!

You want Darren or Silent for this sort of thing.

This must be Gareth Taylor early in 1997-8.

When Gannon scored we won 5-2 in 1991-2. That was the same game as one of Lake's long range efforts. That was sort of against the run of play, as United had only 6 shots on target but scored 5 times.

mike lake scored a few crackers

Lake signed for us in Oct 89 from Macclesfield (then a non league club) and played a few games before getting a run in the team in the 91-92 season and then in Jan-Feb 92, he went mad!

He started off with a goal in the 4-0 FA Cup win over Luton on 4/1/92 before getting two long range efforts at Southampton on 11/1/92. The first one was a cracker - around 35 yards out and to the left of the goal, it went straight in the top corner (I was behind the goal it went in and, as he shaped up to shoot, I shouted "don't waste it"!). The second was from around 25 yards out but took a massive deflection.

At Forest on 1/2/92 he then got another long ranger as we won 5-2 and then at home to Man City on 8/2/92 he scored from a very narrow angle at the Kop end as we won 4-2.

And that was it. He never scored again and we off loaded him to Wrexham in March 93 where he sank without trace.

I remember that goal pretty well. Taylor smashed it on the volley from the right hand side of the area. It wasn't particualry far out but was a little Van Basten-esque in technique, dip, being a volley etc. I was squinting from the kop though (naturally goal was at the BL end).

I don't seem to remember Forrest dominating the game though. I'm not 100% but thought that goal capped off a deserved victory.

That's the one. I was on John Street and I remember feeling very happy about that victory. Strange how we see games differently :)

Hang on a minute. This was when Paul Mcrath played for the Blades. I do remember this game and I remember it well. Forest were much fancied being one of the relegated teams and with Van Hoiidonk and crew. We gave them the run around. Ooh ah Paul Mcgrath never left the same 20 square yard patch and still had Van Hoidonk in his pocket. I even remember him out jumping him for headers. Yeah Paris I do disagree with you, they never got a look in that game!

I remember him hitting it when the ball came out of the box and the forest defence was pushing up. Surprised me more than them I think ;)

Tony Currie vs Liverpool - think it was 1971 - past Ray Clemence's right hand. TC was so far out he was virtually in Holmesfield!!

Clareborough's history of the Blades has a photo of the ball flying into the net with TC a mere spec in the distance. The caption just reads "That Goal" Nuff said!! :D

Oh - and Jags away at Crewe.

Jags never scored at Crewe!
