Came back from yesterday’s game feeling totally deflated after a very indifferent 2nd half performance. Don’t like to be over critical given our fantastic league position but Forest were very average and nervous and we failed to capitalise on that fact.
If only we’d have gone for the jugular like Wigan did against us last week, the game would have been over by halftime. I can’t think Pantilimon in their net will ever have an easier game - he didn’t have a save to make in 90 mins. We are guilty of trying to “walk” the ball into the net. We must shoot, particularly as Forest fans we talked to before the game had little confidence in their keeper.
Poor substitutions also cost us as Woodburn looks like a fish out of water at the moment - where was Marvin ?

We do seem to like to fanny about alot when we get near the penalty area and our shooting has been woeful at times has well when we do shoot from outside the box.
Regards Woodburn i think you are being a bit unfair on him young kid chucked on for the last few minutes, Coutts has hardly looked good when he has come on for the last few minutes recently.
Woodburn needs a run of games starting before judging him, unfortunately i don't think he will get that here.
I personally wouldn't mind seeing him start a home game.

The last player to consistently shoot from outside the box was Lee Evans and we saw where that tactic got him...

I agree with the OP on this one. I know what you mean about Woodburn needing a run of games before we judge him, but he gives the ball away far too easily and doesn't seem that bothered about getting it back. That's the problem with that kid. That's why he was subbed off at half-time v Norwich. Same thing. Every time the ball comes to him he loses it. I think he needs to show better ball control and passing, and a higher workrate, then he might get a run of games in the side.

We were poor yesterday.

Did we even have a shot on target? I don't remember their keeper having to make a save.

They weren't much better mind you.

All in all it was pretty much a non game.

Never mind, shit happens and we move on to Friday, when hopefully we will play with a different dynamic.

P.S. Will someone remind me when I'm thinking of going to Forest next season, that in recent years The City Ground has not been a happy hunting ground for us.

I know that there are differing views on the matter, but i don't think that BS & LC 'works' as a front two, i see them a two lone strikers when they play together (i appreciate the link up against Wigan, which i want to see more of). I don't see much of a partnership nor understanding between the two, in the classic sense. From what I have seen over the last two seasons, i thought LC looked most threatening against Wednesday at their place with Brooks playing off/around him. LC kind of created space/a gap that DB's intelligent running & pace made use of, sort of lateral as opposed to vertical. BS appears to function better with McG (this season at least).

We now find ourselves with a problem. If we aren't going to play a 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1, then Woodburn is not needed & won't get a run in the team which the whole point of him being here, the only other position that i could see his in the DB Wednesday role, roaming around LC (which I could imagine him being good at). If we do that, then I can't see a starting role for either BS or McG, who are currently our best chance of scoring. I don't think that trying to shoe horn in LC, BS & McG works as a starting option, better for the last 15 mins of a game to try and salvage something. It also drops our pace down dramatically.

It appears that the longer LC is dropped from the first 11, he goes off the boil mentally/physically, and it seems the longer than Woodburn is here and doesn't start, the more he is a waste of a wage & an unnecessary negative focus on the team. So, catch 22, i'd like to see LC & Woodburn start, but it comes at the expense of dropping our best two, if we start with our best two it damages our options off the bench.

Regarding the 4-3-3 (flat midfield 3 of coutts, fleck & norwood, with sharp in the centre and two from woodburn/washington/marvin occupying the wide positions) & 4-2-3-1 ideas (two from fleck/coutts/norwood in the two, with duffy and woodburn and marvin as the 3, with BS or LC upfront), both i think would work. It gives us flexibility and allows us player rotation without dropping the quality on the pitch, putting round pegs in round holes as opposed to trying to squeeze them into square holes.

Here you go...

Full match stats. (we had one shot on target).

Although it may not have been the case yesterday the stats can be a bit misleading as they seem to count blocked shots as off target even if they would otherwise gone in.

I know that there are differing views on the matter, but i don't think that BS & LC 'works' as a front two,

We could have had Messi and Suarez up front yesterday and still not scored. Billy had a half chance to shoot and he took the better option and laid it off to Coutts, apart from that we had Woodburn's "chance" in the 88th minute. Slim pickings when the midfield provides nothing, fortunately it hasn't happened that often this season.

Edit - I agree that it should be back to the front line from a few weeks ago though. McGoldrick and Sharp with Duffy in behind.

Want to change title of this to cross , cross , cross .. we all love dominating the possession stats and I’m 100% behind the brand of football we play but for fuck sake when we work the position wide get the fuckin cross where we can apply some pressure & at least give the defenders something to defend . Derby shows that the other week against us two decent balls in and 2 goals ,

If we'd have produced a cross yesterday it would have landed perfectly on the head or at the feet of Dawson. We always manage to make him look like a modern day version of Franz Beckenbauer and Paolo Maldini rolled into one.

Hadn't anyone noticed how defensive forest were/forest are /karanka is /karanka always has been
Not many teams go to the scabs and score goals our problem yesterday was we didn't defend as doggedly as them, Freeman had his obligatory saunter over to a player he'd left unmarked and bang one nil

He did the same against derby and both times our performance should have been enough for a draw but we have players who when they aren't playing well don't do their jobs for the full 90

Not really a criticism you get this with players who have always played around the lower leagues

I think it was the great Bill Shankly who said "if you don't shoot you won't score". It's common sense and I agree that we all too often seem to miss the opportunity to "pull the trigger". Having said that we don't actually seem to have the players who can score from distance. Our stats show that. But is that cos we don't shoot or we are just shit at shooting?

can someone tell me how the midfield 3 started the game.

Was it Coutts or Norwood in the centre of the three, assuming Fleck was left?

UTB

I don't think we can really form an opinion of us being shit at shooting from distance. Because it's a rarity we ever do. Im glad there is other people who feel the same way, as it's an issue I see us having for some time until we finally start having digs from distance. Too much time is spent trying to walk it into the net rather than having a cheeky dig on goal. Worse thing is a miss.

Also. Just noticed the OPs name. "Ceasefire" quite fitting for the thread title.. haha

Thats because that is our style of play, well done on not noticing in 3 years
