Sheffield United boss Chris Wilder eyeing winter window moves for Premier League promotion

Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder wants the club to back him in the January transfer window to boost the Championship leaders hopes of promotion.

Sheffield United Chris Wilder is already targeting the winter transfer window

The Blades are two points clear at the top and go to fellow promotion rivals Nottingham Forest on Saturday.

But Wilder is already planning for the winter transfer window and believes it will be key to his side's promotion challenge as they look to return to the Premier League for the first time since 2007.

Asked about January spending, he told Sky Sports News: "It's their [the board's] decision. I'm an employee of the football club but I will give my recommendations.

"As all managers will say, you want to improve and you're one player short of what we need.

"We felt we got value for money for what we brought in in the summer and hopefully we can push on in January.

"I do think sometimes the players need that extra boost but at the moment we've got a strong squad, stronger than we were last year but hopefully we can add in January although it is a notoriously different market to work in.

Wilder has been Sheffield United boss since May 2016

"You look at last year, possibly Fulham were the outstanding ones in terms of what they did bringing Matt Targett and Aleksandar Mitrovic.

"That gave them a big boost and fired them to promotion but I think all the teams will now be looking to do the same and obviously there's a small amount of players you can go for.

"We'll try and do that in our way. It's well-documented that we can't compete at the top end. We have to make sure we get it right if I'm allowed to."

Really interesting that he's making this very political move so early. It does suggest that he thinks we have a real opportunity this year.

This is key point number 1: "hopefully we can add in January although it is a notoriously different market to work in."

Key point number 2 is that, while CW has shown himself capable of completely inspirational signings (eg Norwood), he has also shown himself capable of fucking up bigstyle (eg everyone from last January).

If he gets it right this January--and this will involve a lot of good luck in terms of player-availability, and stars aligning etc--we have a GREAT chance this season. The number of games between alleged promotion contenders that have ended in draws, thus far, bears this out.

Up the mighty Blades. Let's hope that The Tax Exile and the Bog Roll Prince do get their act together after Christmas.

How confident are we of this?

I'm sure Chris said he'd still got a wedge of money left over to be able to spend in Jan

Is he now saying he now needs permission to spend it?

This is our best chance in many years to get out of this division. Don't mess it up Board

I’d be happy enough if they:-

a) let CW reinvest any money he’s got left in the pot from sales (e.g. Brooks)

b) Don’t make him sell anyone he doesn’t want to

No point in appointing a brilliant wheeler-dealer and not letting him wheel and deal

Wilder's fuck ups in January were that bad that we made big profits on two of the three permanents. Wilson was the only disaster..

Scarborough isn't a tax haven

Already dreading the meltdown on here when Wilder isn’t backed in January, our season derails and he hints he’ll be leaving.

Did "we"? When do I get my share? So the club made a profit but fucked up on their promotion prospects so I suppose everythings tickety boo then and we should all be grateful.

Fair point.

Though what would we rather have had? Successful additions who kept us in the top 6, or finishing mid-table with money to be made on the balance sheet?

There’s not been a window where wilder hasn’t looked to strengthen.

Pretty much every other manager except those sanctioned will be looking to strengthen.

Nothing new here

Certainly every manager is looking to strengthen.

Not every manager is sending messages to the board via the medium of Sky Sports.

I’d say that the message is to the players - were top of the league but were still looking to improve so no time for sitting back

Of course wilder will have talked to the board.

It’s hardly a back me or sack me and it’s a long way away from his end of season toys out the pram from last season, so I guess it’s just a nice filler for sky sports

November is the month when January transfers are usually discussed. CW is getting in early as there was a suggestion that what was agreed last November for the JTW had to be put on the back burner when the owners fell out a few weeks later.

Without any information to the contrary it seems mediation has not taken place and so as a Club we are heading towards a full Court Hearing next May. You have to hope that the owners in the interim are sensible enough to get together, despite their differences and agree early what will be made available to CW. If they maintain their position that they are no longer investing in the Club then this will impact on JTW funds. Meeting the running costs of the Club until the end of the season will have to take precedence over large scale funds for new players. The down payment on the Brooks money can only be stretched so far so logically we may be shopping in the loan market rather than permanent transfers.

What must happen is that we resist any bids for first eleven players but the precarious financial position we are in may be an influencing factor. If we come out at the end of the window with the squad intact and a couple of quality loans in then that will IMO be a success.

I don't think Wilder fucked up at all last January window.

He probably had better players identified and targeted but the ownership refused to sanction the spend.

Hence, we got players that in the end wouldn't give us what we required.
Don't be mean - let Snooty have his cry of anguish along with a pop at the club. :)

The key to the JTW could well be IF we are in the top 2, and hopefully top as we are now.

Splash it all on 1 player to put the ball in the net.

Good luck Mr Mitchell in finding that player.

All managers make mistakes in recruitment, what I like about wilder is he fairly quickly realises it and moves on with little fuss, I know it's a saying on here now but I really do trust him with our club, as I say he makes a mistake and gets on with it, the board obviously must feel the same, they see what we see, I don't know what wilder is asking for but he will be sensible and the board should appreciate that and back him, I think they will.

Why do you think kept your tickets so cheap? If a business buys something and sells it for a profit it's usually deemed good business.

Both. That's additions that would've guaranteed top six and a healthy balance sheet. We're in an extremely healthy position FFP wise and just need the right ownership to push on now.

In terms of revenue into the business he did well.
But his job isn’t to look after the financials, but to bring success on the pitch- and to that end his acquisitions were unsuccessful.
If he’d come out in jan and said “these lads aren’t going to strengthen the 1st team, but will make a few Bob for the FD” we’d have (rightly so) up in arms.
He cites the impact of the Fulham signing as a success, so by that yard stick ours were wank.
However he ditched them quickly so fingers crossed he has learned and this year we will be cuter and push on to the auto’s

But one impacts on the other, no? He's in charge of a budget, so player sales (and profits) will have an impact on his budget and whether he can push the team on. Fulham were shopping in a different market where they could cherry pick proven quality. Wilder has to make informed gambles, with an eye on successfully moving them on if they don't work out.

Any team in this divisions first choice striker.

I know Boro fans that hate Assombalonga for example. Imagine him in our team.. we need to literally go out and buy a championship striker, with cash, not £50k, like £6 or £7m

Last seasons January signings were the cheap option hoping one or two would make the step up, they didn't but were sold on for a profit so you can't really say they were bad signings. Are we out of pocket due to them ? No.
Here's hoping we can bring in some real quality this time but if not we bring in players who we can make a profit on so no more 30+ year olds.

100% correct mate
But I think the manager and FD should be at a bit of opposition in a nice way. One has to control the purse strings, whilst the other has to stretch them to bring success to his job description, ie promotion.
Hopefully that needle brings a meeting of minds with a combined success.
I would hate it if wilder asked for money, the bean counter said no and he just agreed!
Professional respect would only ensue if they argued a little at least?

Doesn't look like the ownership issues are going to be resolved any time soon, so CW isn't going to have a huge amount to spend.
Does he gamble on one "marquee" signing that could fire us to promotion? What if he turns out to be crap? Or his wages alienate the other players? Plus we have to try to hang on to players like Fleck & JOC who will inevitably interest other teams. It's going to be a tricky balancing act.

Agreed but with a caveat are you sure we made a profit, we’ve still got Ricky Holmes playing at Oxford , plus the wages we’ve payed to the likes of Evans and Leonard. May I also remind you Lundstram is also still here.
Having said all that I think these were all worth a punt and we’ve not spunked millions away on tossers like the truffle hunters.
