Omens for Saturday?

Presumably all those of you who have various superstitions, lucky objects, rituals, etc, are fully respectful and understanding of those of a religious persuasion and never make sneering comments about people who believe in "sky fairies", correct?

Getting a little more serious than I in tended to be on this thread, I would say I don't sneer at religions. But I also don't try to impose my belief system on others, and I don't welcome attempts to do that to me.

Gave up on being superstition after the 2012 Play Off final. Before that I'd make deals with the Footballing Gods before the match, give money to homeless people, visit elderly relatives, anything to build up the positive karma. Now I don't give a shit. Going to watch the game on Saturday in the "unlucky" pub - in fact, I can't remember seeing us win there, and can remember loads of Blades losses. So if we lose, it's probably my fault.

Never setting foot in there again when the Blades are playing. That place is cursed.

That's very good of you, but not really what I said. I am pointing out that the belief in the supernatural is no different to belief in God (a god/gods).

I am probably over-sensitive after the disappointment of the Derby result, but I assumed your post was ironical, suggesting that those of us who have footballing superstitions probably sneer at people who have religious beliefs. Apologies if I mis-interpreted your words. I think the superstitious amongst us are generally a tolerant bunch - we tend to keep our superstitions to ourselves, and not impose our beliefs on others. The day that super_pig demands that only those wearing lucky red underpants are allowed into Bramall Lane is the day I give up on superstition.

super_pig, I believe, would like you to wear his lucky red underpants.

If any of my superstitions actually worked, United would have been champions of Europe for the last 50 years...with me starring in goal for them.

Nah, just become a bit intollerant of superstitions since I've been in Germany. They are very supersticious, which you wouldn't have thought, but they are and they actually properly believe the crap as well.

Ever since I was a kid, I’ve been superstitious about football (and nothing else). Going to away matches with my brother and a group of pals, we used to walk from the railway station to the ground looking for ‘signs’, and a Coldwell Lane or shop calling Lewis’s convinced us we were going to win. Today we are finishing a holiday in Majorca (very nice, and thank-you for asking). Every time we switch on the TV the word SHARP fills the screen for about 30 seconds, but more significantly a bird-watching session today produced a great find. We were looking at a load of coots, when out of the reeds came a magnificent pair of crested coots, one of Europe’s rarest. Above its brilliant white beak and forehead it has (in the words of my bird book, lest you think me vulgar) ‘a pair of brilliant red knobs’. With Sharp and the rare, magnificent crested red-and-white Coutts on our side, the footballing gods have surely ordained victory on Saturday.

I trust that you are now cured of superstition Hodgy?

I was reading a book tonight and the missus said, “it’s cold in here, Stoke up the fire a bit will you?”. The book was by Bram Stoker. A tale of a bloke with a severe calf-lick, pointy teeth and a cloak. He only came out at night.

On Tuesday night we play Stoke!

I think it will be a gory contest with a lot of bloodshed

Just when I thought I was cured. Just look at how many tournaments Germany have won... There's perhaps something in it after all.

I think this fixture could really bite us!
