There has been no slaughtering but as the purpose of the thread was another "This is how I support the Blades so you should too" and there hasn't been a mass genuflection to that view it probably feels that way.

As to the interesting bit of the thread (i.e. are we in a "Golden period) then it's an age thing I think.
If you were watching in the early seventies then this is not the greatest time you've ever had as a Blade, if you started in the eighties it probably feels pretty good right now.

United's performance is only part of the equation though. If the pigs are in the shite then this usually gives us a little more leeway. If they are doing well then the pressure gets applied far more.
To me the recent past is defined with the 02/03 season when we played really well and came up just shy and the pigs were abysmal and got relegated.

Ahh, Mousey! The bravery of youth has invaded your soul I see. That belief of the young that the good will out and the positive will triumph.

You believe mistakenly, that all follow The Blades for the same reasons and have identical motivation for doing so. There is a sizable contingent who have attended for years who would be truly shaken to their very foundations if suddenly Sheffield United FC acquired billions and began winning everything. Their raison d'être for following for all these years would have been removed, for they mistakenly thought it was to see them being successful, when in actuality it was to vent their spleen, to moan, to complain because it provided a valid opportunity to do so. They have on this journey met kindred spirits and the bond of baying brotherhood has formed.

Remember the words of Edwin Whipple, an American who probably wrote these words around the time Sheffield United was being formed:

"The very large, very respectable, and very knowing class of misanthropes who rejoice in the name of grumblers,- persons who are so sure that the world is going to ruin, that they resent every attempt to comfort them as an insult to their sagacity, and accordingly seek their chief consolation in being inconsolable, their chief pleasure in being displeased."

Be more understanding young man! We're all Blades, but for many different reasons!

wow! good to see theres no pomposity on this site!!
seriously, you have a point southessex. happily I think this board attracts many fewer of those misanthropes than other places, most on here do substantiate their arguements and I'm all for contructive criticism as a healthy check on the prevailing wisdom of KMc and KB

Havent got a clue what you are on about, but yeah, sounds good to me! erm thinking about it did you mean to say......"some people just like a good moan"??

The other question this raises though is - What is the purpose of a forum? Is it simply a place where us Blades can swap our thoughts and frustrations - or do some people think it's more? A good number of posts on here (and far more elsewhere) seem to be written as though our thoughts actually matter and we can alter the decisions of KB and KMcC.

In extreme circumstances - such as the dire need to get Robson out of the Lane - forums can mobilise opinion, but 99% of the time I'm sure the opinions of fans have absolutely no effect on the football played on the pitch. And in my opinion neither should they - as a tiny minority of fans will have the qualifications and experience to select a team and tactics at Championship level - or know how to run a multi-national business. I certainly don't - and whilst I'm more than happy to chunter to my mates in the pub before and after games - and to say my piece on here I don't expect it to make the slightest difference.

For me this forum is a great chance to kick around all sorts of Blades stuff - and it's a chance to meet new Blades and make match days more enjoyable too - but that's pretty much the size of it. I think those people who are saying that as fans/customers they have a right to to influence decisions and that forums keep the club on their toes will be sadly disappointed. Generally speaking - we're not that important.

Accept things as they are
Never question anything
Believe everything you are told
Be satisfied with the mediocre
Disregard anything that doesn't fit in with preconceived notions

No thanks.

My only response to that is just enjoy it, smile, have some craic with the people sat around you, get behind the lads and be positive. Seriously it's good fun. ;)

not for one moment do I believe that the club sit reading these boards and taking any notice, and nor should they, my point was a wider one about fans having a voice at the club, its not about picking the team etc, but I think "customers" are important in any industry or business, as I said I think KMc does generally listen, i personally like quite a few others had many email discussions with him re Robson and was invited down to chat with him which |I did afetr robson went before the boro cup game.
It left me in no doubt that fans and their opinions matter to the board, I'm not for one minute advocating that we should be privvy to every decision made but I think we do count for something when decisions are made and ininstances like BT being sold we have a right to some dialogue with the club

I know a Leeds fan very well who has seen his club play at most of the great stadiums in Europe and he wouldn't swap any of his memories for a bit of the stability you crave.

Can I make a suggestion? Why dont you sell your house and all your possessions and spend them on renting a private Carribbean Island, full 5 star service for as long as you can afford. You'll have a wonderful time and have some fantastic memories when you get back and realise you have nowhere to live.

The Leeds bankruptcy and rebirth cost many small companies and individuals large sums of money. They ended up £7m down to the Revenue. Thats taxes matey that should have gone to pay for schools and nurses, but which ended up being written off, providing Ken Bates with a clean start with the club.

Now I don't know about you but for anyone from Leeds United to recall the heady days of enjoying a few European nights paid for (in effect) by honest caterers and printers, gardeners and coach companies, who supplied goods and services to Leeds and got shafted, and not forgetting you and I, the tax payer, and what the £7m could have been used for, then they should be thoroughly ashamed of themselves...

FatPat,

I wouldn't go so far as to say that the fans are unimportant to the management - so we may actually be saying similar things here. I feel that the customer relations at the Lane are pretty good (and on those overnight ticket queues etc I've certainly benefitted from the Club's goodwill). I just feel that in the overall picture of 21stC footy, the few hundred quid I (and people like me) contribute through our season ticket and bits of merchandise pale into total insignificance compared to transfer and TV millions etc.

The Club certainly values having a loyal fan base - and KMcC has proven himself when it comes to his personal links to us - - but when it comes to how the club/business is run, I think our thoughts and feelings come second to economics and "professional" decisions.

Personally I don't have a problem with this - and if I did have a problem, then I hope I'd be realistic to accept that the problem is mine - and not the Club's.

I do accept totally though that the Robson stuff was a totally different matter - and it rare times like that "fan-power" can make a real difference.
