Before we left Harrogate yesterday, for the game, we met up with two Leyton Orient fans, who had come up for the Harrogate Town game. We'd met them three years ago while watching England cricket abroad and became FB friends. One of them had been to Bramall Lane a couple of times and reminded me of a game in October 2014, where they had led 1-0, we then scored two quickly and they equalised in the 99 minute having had a man sent off. He then read the team out. Not only did I have no recollection of the game, but I can't remember Paddy McCarthy ever having played for us let alone scoring. Only Basham left from that team.

He played 11 times and scored 1 goal, for the man who never actually trained with our squad. That bizarre arrangement of having a new player not train with the squad was one of the first signs that Nigel Clough was losing the plot.

He got sent off in the game at Doncaster where Howard saved the resulting penalty and then Murphy scored an absolute belter a few minutes later to give us a win.

You can’t have been at the way game v Chezzie then, when he gave the ball away for them to go either 1 or 2-0 up in a game we lost 3-2. It was a pathetic bit of defending that is indelibly imprinted on my brain.

Minging weather but a good away day - remember a fan running on to celebrate and falling flat on his arse in the rain!

Remember Bob Harris getting him back in the stand as well to stop him getting thrown out.

There did seem to be a distinctly positive vibe in the squad when it was going well for Clough. It all went wrong when he started losing the plot

Fuck me, that team, that football, that kit, that manager, that era. Stuff of nightmares

The saving grace of that team was Jamie Murphy. His creativity and goals pretty much kept the team going while Clough was slowly destroying the defence.

Beautiful goal by Murphy in those Donny highlights, a match we probably deserved nothing from.

One of the many failed attempts to plug the hole created by selling Maguire and Clough falling out with Collins and Butler.

For which Collins and Butler (not forgetting the much-misunderstood De Juve) were entirely blameless. It was all the fault of Nigel Clough, who clearly knows less about the game than three complete mediocrities.

If we hadn’t sold Maguire he’d still be unavailable due to sunburn.

Still, we must always put the blame where it suits our prejudice.

Paddy was Warnock doing us a 'favour'.

A good player who was crocked and nowhere near fit. If he hadn't have been then no way would he have dropped down that far.

Not sure how we didn't win that match:

Got shafted with a disallowed goal that was onside for McNuts and a blatant penalty on JCR.

Clough did sign Butler before immediately falling out with him, so he's got to shoulder some of that blame.

Just looking at that video made me reflect on the time that Basham has been with us. Plied his trade and remained an integral part of the team. Jack of all trades is our Bash, and very good he is too. I suppose it's what Milner does for the scousers, and we should be thankful he's managed to adjust as we've improved.

Remember that game well. Got some right abuse walking back into my house when they realised I was a Donny Blade.

Of course. He has his faults but he’s achieved a great deal more than the three useless articles he ‘fell out with’.

The game where this useless barrel of lard got sent off? (Shudder)

The two Cup runs reaching the semis were memorable! We hammered Forest with Chris Porter scoring two late on in front of the Kop with a pitch invasion at the end. Hull at Wembley, the games against Spurs, Charlton at the Lane in front of a sell out crowd and hammering them, Villa away, OPR away premiership team and beating them 3.0. Clough gave us some great memories. Followings and atmosphere at those games was as good as anything I've experienced.

He never lost the plot. He never had the plot in his grasp at any point.

I think I generally have a decent record in terms of predicting how someone will do at United vs how they actually end up doing, but this I remember being one of those where I was about as wrong as you can be. Was absolutely convinced that he was exactly what we needed at the time – experienced but still at a good age, decent record at a higher level, great attitude, a leader, Palace fans didn’t have a bad word to say about him. It almost felt like we’d been loaned someone else as a practical joke.

Just one of a few examples of where Clough was happy to have unfit players involved.

He had Shaun Barker lined up ffs
