Was he really born in Chapeltown?

I always thought he was born and brought up in Barnsley, so seeing that he is from Chapeltown is a pleasant suprise?

Does anyone know where he lived in Chap, and if he lived in Chap through is playing career, and what school he went to.

I'm not being a stalker but being a local lad myself i never realised that a Blades legend grew up in my local area

I lived in Chap for a good few years in the early 80's and I always thought he was from there.

He was born in Chapeltown but raised in Silkstone Common.

I remember him when he left his wife and moved in with a women on Myrtle Road.

I used to bump into him on my way home from the Roundhouse (mmmm Wards!) as a drunk 17 yr old! :D

He lived in Worrall throughout a lot of his playing career, certainly his later years with the Blades until he left his missus.

I lived in Chap from the age of 11 and went to Ecclesfield School (it was a good school then) and I was in the same class as Simon Stainrod, not quiet a Blades legend as Woody, but its my claim to fame. I was there from 1970 to 1977.

This recalls the "lame to fame" threads on BU - i.e. the person who can establish the most tenuous connection to a United player wins.

My two pennorth:

(1) I went to Newfield school and Jeff Eckhardt was in the year above me. When we were both in the 6th form we played together in a interform football tournament and I scored a goal after Jeff's shot was parried by the keeper.
(2) My dad when to Coleridge Road school in Tinsley and was in the same year as Len Badger.

When did he play for United?

Sadly my only United 'Lame to Fame' is that Matt Spring was in the year above me at school and I used to play against him at lunchtimes.

I was once ejected from the VIP area of Eros nightclub in Enfield for being rude to ex Spurs player David Howells.

I was in the same year as Jeff at Newfield and played in the school team with him and also Chris Beaumont who went on to play for Stockport and Chesterfield.

I took no part in the above mentioned 6th form match though. I left school early to earn a living and instead became one of Maggie's millions. I now realise this was a mistake as, had I stayed on like a good boy I may now have been able to recount an amusing story about Darren :D

Thats very interesting. Would you mind telling me your name, as I may recall you - I know that Jeff's school team was extremely successful and I remember reading their results and marvelling at the God likely abilities of the players in the year above me :-)

John Howard - I played right back for the first couple of years but as you say we were a very good school team and I found myself on the subs bench towards the end of the second year and Mr Mugford persuaded me to join the rugby team who were quite good as well.
If you don't recall me, in the last few years at school I was one of the long haired rocker types of which there were quite a few in our year.

Sorry, I don't recall you, but I do recall lots of loppers around that time :-)

Mugford was a right sadist in my humble opinion. He once picked up a boy who he didn't think was trying hard enough during a rugby game and threw him bodily into a muddy puddle! It wouldn't happen these days....
