Don't wish to give anything away, but I know the ending. !

It was with trepidation that I opened this thread... who could've known there were 2 such gifts that could be descibed as 'special'!

Good read, although I felt the author(s) also had a bit of an agenda with regarding to bashing a few people. For example in the section about Dave Bassett, they said he basically left the club in exactly the same place as when he came in, which I thought was very unfair.

My overwhelming feeling after reading it was the lack of ambition, penny-pinching and missed opportunities by the club since the early part of the 20th century. Still, I suppose that wouldn't be a surprise to most people.

Technically it’s true about Bassett, just as it is about Warnock. That’s because, in the long term, the actions of the owners and directors of a club will always have more impact than a manager.

Well, considering my wife (an American) got me this book without my knowledge and with the understanding that my world still revolves around SUFC even at the young age of 65, she IS special for researching and finding this book. Personally, I wasn't aware that this book existed but, I'm glad to say, my 'Special' wife found me a 'Special' book to read. From my time on the academy team in the 60's, I am looking forward to reminiscing when reading about John Harris, the then manager, and John Short who was my Academy coach....

I quite possibly know you, or at least of you, as your age and 60's history is as familiar as mine...

I was a GK for the Hatchard League team and then moved to the U18 Academy team. I was the GK until Tom McAllister was brought down from Scotland and he took my place. Mick Speight was on the team I played on...

Errrr happy for you! Might start posting all my stuff I have bought from the blades shop

That names sounds familiar.....
Brian was my age and played for Don & Dearne Boys U15 (I played for Sheffield), he signed apprentice pro on leaving school (Arthur Rowley was then manager).
He never signed full professional forms and was released at the end of his two year apprenticeship. Tom McAllister came from Campsie Black Watch in circa 70/71.
