There are so many threads blaming the board and the manager for not doing enough in bringing in the players we needed rather than blame the agents?

Yesterday Joe Bryan had completed his medical and was about to sign for Villa but his agent engineered a move for him to go to Fulham. This is totally wrong!

Wouldn't surprise me if over the summer Wilder and the club were frustrated by the agents who kept moving the goalposts like it did in Deadline Day last year.

Probably because agents are something every club has to deal with, I'd imagine.

There are some bad agents around and almost every club seems to be getting done over at some point but it’s part of modern football and all managers and clubs have to deal with it.

After watching Villa throw their financial weight around for a couple of seasons I laughed when I read about Bryan.

What we shouldn’t do is get all insular and start pretending it’s only a problem for us.

I primarily blame the players themselves. For all the bollocks talk of tactics and formations, the players are responsible for how they perform and the attitude they adopt.

Football is a dog eat dog business, where there is zero loyalty. Clubs only care about winning and if a player doesn’t perform they’ll soon get rid without giving it a second thought.

Exactly, players employed agents after years of being screwed by clubs. Probably gone too far now, but it doesn't affect us anyway, we're not in the market for players that agents can manipulate the terms on. We might pretend to be, but we're not.....not really

I very much doubt Bryans' agent has just said without consultation to Bryan "you're off to Fulham"

On the other hand Agent says to Bryan "Villa, championship offering £20K, Fulham are being bloody stupid and their Chairman Shad Khan is offering Prem football and £30K. Now the choice is yours......................but........"

No one likes agents - part of the game now. Didn't I read somewhere recently, the football authorities are trying to cap agents fees at 5% and in response, some bright spark of a lawyer has said it won't stand up in the EU courts - it just won't happen"

It does ring true with agents.
I was reading about Man Utd’s failed time in the transfer window and it mentioned a few times where agents own demands have scuppered deals.

I really don’t get why the guys at the top of football can’t put a cap on financial transactions that would deter slimy agents actions.

Agents should not be allowed to have any input in a players movements until clubs want to discuss transfers.

The agent can only receive payments by way of percentage of future players earnings and not ask for part of the transfer cost.

Agreed - it's where football is at.

Personally I don't have a problem with a generally thick footballer who's brains are in his boots having a savvy financial guy doing his bidding.

I have a problem with our fans who have a problem with where the worlds at, at the moment.

Just think of the fall out when 4,5 or 6 of the big English clubs desert the Prem for a European Super League - we might even get in via the back door to the Prem!

Either the footballer should pay his own agent or here is a novel idea.

Every fee should be set

20k wage equals 2k for the agent for example
40k would be 4 and so on.

Player gets 5% of transfer fee which he can pay the agent with.

They shouldn’t be able to charge random high fees

There is more money in football than ever before, meaning there are more ways to make money out of football.

End of the day it’s clubs competing with each other for players which drives up the prices and therefore the agent fees. Can you blame them for taking advantage of that? We’d all do the same in there position.

Not quite.

Believe it or not, the decision where a player moves to is down to the player.

The agent will tempt them with offers from a number of clubs, but it’s their choice ultimately whether to stay or go.

The agents exist to get the highest price they can, that may not be the best deal for the player in terms of career prospects, but it’s the best deal for the player financially. The player has to decide.

It’s ridiculous to blame the agents. They are a bunch of parasites admittedly, but it’s the players who decide. Don’t forget that!

You’re expecting a 21 year old with little education to be able to successfully negotiate contracts worth millions of pounds with all sorts of clauses related to image rights, goal bonuses, promotion bonuses inserted?

I also find this thread laughable that we would be hugely successful without the input of agents, yet whenever we sign other players either under the noses of other teams, or from smaller teams, the power of evil agents is conveniently ignored.

A drinking buddy of mine is the dad of one of our youth cup finalists, his son is no longer in professional football and his dad put it down to the lack of an agent at the critical time of his career with United..

The agents find the top players new clubs for big bucks, but when committed to a young player who gets released as in this case, they’ll try to get the kid into another club and keep him in the game so to speak.. not all bad guys ripping everybody off you know..

Note, think brooks might quite like his new agent....

Hmm! I know what you mean mate, but the role of agents is a bit like the role of a broker. They have built up knowledge of which clubs are looking for what type of player and how much they are willing to offer. It’s in the players interest to work through an agent, financially.

A comparison closer to home for some of us may be an estate agent. We don’t have to use them for buying or selling a house but most of us do, because they (should) know the market, know what sells for what and where, have a list of useful contacts and information to make things easier and better.

Having said all that, there is something disturbingly thick about some footballers that makes me wonder how they ever manage to get up and get dressed in a morning, never mind anything else!
