Reported on sky sports news Steve Mclaren is keen on Sheffield united midfielder David Carney, he wouldn't bring in much of a transfer fee but would be a good move for him

Please be true. Please be true. Please be true.

Carney Gone

Joined McLaren at FC Twente for the infamous 'undisclosed fee'.

Always looked a tidy enough player but never seemed to get to grips with the pace of the English game or Blackie's idea of his role. Not really bothered about the fee but a nice chunk of wages released.

And more due out tomorrow apparently !!

Given we're a few short according to Blackie, there must be a few coming in.....interesting.

Which other big earners from the Robson era do we still have? I can only think of Hendry! Perhaps he is off? Maybe Billy has finally decided to move on?

What will we do with his wages? Bring in the creative midfielder and / or another striker (Hopefully not A. Quinn and Stead)? Give Fortune a contract? Offer Killa more money to stay?

Forgot Naysmith was a Robson Signing - probably because he's not a bad player!

Robbo signed good players, he just couldn't manage them.

Naysmith, Ugo, Carney, Hendrie, Beattie, Cahill (loan) you can't really pick fault with those signings and he wanted Cattermole.

Carney maybe but we can't say he was really given much of a chance.

Carney played for us 21 times, I think that's enough of a chance to be honest. I liked him when he first came but that was because he was put in against Chesterfield & MK Dons and looked a class above. It became apparant later on in the season that he was a nesher. I'll never forgive him or Lee Martin for not giving Hulse any support whatsoever when we rolled over against Wednesday at Hillsborough.

Not sure who said it but they're spot on, it's 10K off the wage bill and may free up funds for a player, which is the most important thing.

Touche! As I now recall even Naysmith performed inconsistently under Robson!

Cattermole would've been a top signing.

A boro fan I was working with a couple of years said the song at Boro for him was not Super Lee Cattermole, but in fact Super League Cattermole ... this was because of his Rugby League style tackles... Brilliant, even for a Smoggie

Cattermole would of been an amazing signing but he is way out of our league now. Robson tried to sign him at the right time, before any of the big boys had really taken notice.

My remaining hope for that type of player is if we get promoted and Bolton struggle this season that we get Fabrice Muamba. He's young but looks one hell of a player, and probably because he came through Arsenals academy he can play a bit for a holding midfielder.

I can absolutely guarantee you that Carney was on nothing like £10k, and I mean nothing like 10K.
shame but he never suited the way we play, when you watch him for Australia you can see he's a good player. technical league like Holland will suit him

The last time I saw him play was at Sheffield FC and he was outclassed there.

Opinion split on his ability but the way he criticised Blackwell publicly was out of order. Quite rightly he never pulled on the shirt again

Good luck to him...........but never a Blade

He was absolute crap.

He might have been a very good technical player, but he didn't have any stomach for the fight at all and that says it all for me.

A few things stick in the mind for me with Carney, the first was a complete non performance with a complete lack of effort in a dismal defeat at Hillsborough which signalled the end of Bryan Robson's reign. An incident when we played in the cup at football where he was played through 1 on 1 with the keeper and it was 80-20 in his favour and he neshed it. He decided he was more bothered about playing in the Olympics than knuckling down and fighting for his place.

A player i'm well and truly chuffed to bits to see the back of.

Thank god for that! A big drain on the wage bill and for nothing!

Shame ponting and the rest of the useless aussie crap couldnt take him back on the loser bus back to down under any sooner

Not sad to see him go but had more talent than most give him credit for, and would not be playing fullback for the Aussies if he was as "nesh" as some make out.

I think you underestimate how much less physical games against Asian sides and international friendlies are than the Championship.

I saw him play against Qatar about 18 months ago. He was great. That's because none of the oppostion were over about 5 foot 10 and they hardly came near him.

If they are daft enough to use him in SA things will be very different.

The Dutch league will suit him because he's signing for one of the best teams and about half of the sides in that league are about League 1 standard.

I for one will not miss him.

Play for your country or 'attempt' to get in a long ball team when your style of play isn't being suited?

No brainer for me.

Carney had something about him, but he did bottle challenges. I believe he would be more accustomed to the PL rather than this league.

I don't believe he was crap, just never produced the form he is capable of.

Not crap at all. Just nesh which is different entirely.

Best game was when we won at Coventry and Beattie played up front alone with Tonge, Carney etc. bombing forward from midfield. Thought Robson had found a winning way to play that day. Wrong!

Anyone willing to bet that there's no replacement and the wages saved go into servicing our debt?
