Anyone listen to John towards the end of the show? Agreed with everything he said regarding Enda Stevens and Baldocks end product.

With the formation and style we play these should be where most of our assists come from and they are the only players truly on the wing and we go wide 90% of the time.

1 assist from 36 games? I didn’t realise that’s all Baldock got last year, freeman got more assist and goals in 10 games.

Totally agree.

Speaking to a mate yesterday as well who used to be a professional full back and who watches United.

Says the end product of both is nowhere near good enough for the system we play.

That's because Freemans ace.

Freeman can't run for shit. Get rid of Baldock and Basham is probably our quickest player on the bitch

Agreed. Our system relies on creative wing backs. I would imagine Stevens didn't have more than a handful of assists last season either? I recall a beauty v Wolves and one v Forest - which Lunny scored but we need more from out wide, even more so if we are to have no Duffy or Woodburn in the side - other than currently off the bench.

As for Freeman, as good as he is going forward his injury record is poor and although that's not his fault it provides no competition for Baldock when Freeman is unfit. Lafferty as a replacement for Stevens has being mentioned by some but not for me, worse than Stevens. Would rather see Kean Bryan tried there or even O'Connell switched out there and bring Bryan in.

This is one of the main reasons I think we should consider changing formation. The wing backs are such an important part of our creativity but both sides create almost nothing.

The change you suggest is long overdue .

It's been patently obvious for months now that we simply don't have the quality of players to play this system effectively at this level .

However , given the frame of mind that Wilder appears to be in at the moment , I'm not holding my breath .

...Tufteh??

Just to play devil’s advocate; we did make it to the top of the table first half of last season with both Baldock and Stevens at full back...it’s a deeper lying issue than the lack of output from the wing-back positions that accounts for our dip in performance over the last 9 months.

If you watch the left flank in an attack situation, JOC gets forward faster than Stevens, puts in better passes/crosses, than Stevens, is better in both boxes than Stevens, gets back quicker than Stevens, defends better than Stevens, keeps the ball better than Stevens, in short, he's probably doing half of Stevens job, aswell as his own, which is why we get caught out, we'd actually be better playing JOC on the left and sticking Stearman in with Bash an Egan at the back.
Stevens has done himself no favours at all, and it's beyond me why he plays every week, he brings very little to the party.

I'll also add that Freeman's contributions were made in the division below the one we're currently in, so hard to compare given standards etc.
Even so, Freeman can score goals, he's good at getting in behind defenders, his crossing isn't bad, and he puts his body Into tackles, which is why he gets injured.

full back/wing back has become one of the most important positions in the game IMHO.. it used to be the case that you could stick an out of work CB there to fill a gap but now they are used as extra midfielders. in the modern era these players need the engine of a tank, the crossing ability of a winger and the defensive skills of a centre half
in one of his few run outs last season i seem to remember Freeman did rather well and scored a goal

Hi John. :)

When I watch Stevens, I see the traditional left back that looks more accustomed to being asked to offer more defensive balance in a 4-4-2. Certainly looks more suited to playing in a back four than playing wing back. He clearly doesn't offer us enough in terms of quality of delivery, which is critical in our current system.

I think Baldock can play the wing back position itself, he can get up and down the pitch, but again he does not offer us enough of an end product. The statistics speak for themselves. That said, there are also many occasions where we end up playing into the corners, we have the opportunity to cross and then we'll only have Clarke in the box.

I agree I'd rather Freeman be there and Stevens wasn't good enough last year never mind trying to get to the next level. 1 assist in 36 is poor for Boldock, I didn't even realize how poor!

The key to the team is the Trinity, a midfield that clicks will make the time for the League 1 wingbacks, to get better crosses in. It also protected the defence through its mobility disrupting counter attacks and compensated for Dad's Army lack of speed as they were given the extra second their legs no longer give them for the good finishers they are. Thankfully Evans has gone, Ive not seen enough of Norwood to be convinced he will be up to the task.
