If we go 4 at the back I'd like to see...

- - - - - - - - - - - Henderson

Baldock - - -Egan - - - O'Connell - - Bryan

- - - - - - - - - - - - Basham
- - - - - Leonard - - - - - - - - Fleck

- - - - - - - -Duffy - - - - Woodburn
- - - - - - - - - - - - Sharp

I can't see us going to a back 4 because that means we have so many of the existing starting 11 on the bench (who play centrally) and we don't have enough wide players. We only have Duffy and Woodburn for the wide roles with one sub of Ricky Holmes who will probably leave before the deadline closes. I can only see a 4-2-3-1 formation as a plan. If we did go for it then it would mean Fleck and Coutts (when back) will occupy the two defensive midfield options with Egan and O'Connell occupying the central two defenders. The attacking midfield three would be Duffy, Woodburn and maybe one of Leonard, Evans or Lundstram. Which means that Basham and 2 of Leonard, Evans or Lundstram on the bench. That would still leave Stearman, Bryan on the bench and also two of the three forwards on the bench. I just can't see Wilder doing that.

Wilder has structured his squad to play the existing system but saying that we only have 3 out and out forwards so going to a 4-2-3-1 would be feasible up top. Time to drop Lundstram and Stevens for me. Bring O'Connell out to LWB or play Lafferty or Bryan. I know O'Connell won't be moved so its the latter two options that are more likely. I reckon we'll line up as follows on Saturday, with a 3-5-2 formation.

1 Hendo GK
2 Baldock RWB
3 Stevens LWB
4 Egan CB
5 O'Connell LCB
6 Basham RCB
7 Evans CM
8 Fleck CM
9 Clarke CF
10 McGoldrick CF
11 Duffy AM (attacking mid)

I doubt Wilder would start with both Duffy and Woodburn unless he goes only one up top and goes with how we finished at Boro, which is the Plan B I mentioned earlier. Leonard might come in for Evans from in the 3-5-2 but can't see major changes. as I think Wilder would see that as a ripping up something that has largely being successful in his time with us.

We can only hope that we find a solution quick and like the season where we got promoted from League 1 we'll then vastly improve. Otherwise its as we are and hope we simply play better as a team. Whatever we do we obviously need to improve how we're playing.

One of our major problems is that our opponents (based largely on last season) would have set out a game plan - 'Keep it tight and catch them on the break'. Now they'll have seen vids. of our first two games and it will have changed to 'Nothing to fear. Keep it tight at the back and their attacks will break down with sideways and backwards passing. Their build-up play is utterly ponderous. Don't be frightened to give free-kicks or corners away as they're fucking hopeless at crossing. In the unlikely event that we go behind, don't worry. Run at their defence, overload with speedy wing-back play and they'll shit it.'

I'm being serious. I know our next two home opponents - Norwich and Villa - will go away absolutely gutted with anything less than 3 points and our season could turn into a 'self-fulfilling prophesy'.

Not sure we’ll see Bryan just yet but sod it, he deserves a chance as much as anyone else that’s played there so far.
Im going to say, I have seen a lot of people put formations up but I would say this is the worst selection ive seen.

Thanks for that valuable input. It was a bit experimental if we wanted to change things up quite drastically but hey ho.

Edit to say that’s how we ended up yesterday formation wise, I’m up for keeping that and merely replacing some of those that haven’t performed yet.

I could explain why its the worst selection ive seen but I don't share my valuable input for free.
