Your proudest moment of being a Blade.

The moment which immediately sprang to mind was Wembley when Hull's fifth went in. That most amazing moment when every Blade simultaneously stood up and applauded our lads. It just summed up the love we Blades feel for our players when they give their all. Lots of other great moments, but none that made me feel as proud.

Following on from GCB's most influential decade of being a Blade. This thread got me feeling all Bladey, Blade & got me thinking about those moments that gave me that warm fuzzy feeling of "thank god I'm a Blade".

Mine was the Cup semi against Hull. Separated by an entire division, we were huge under dogs. A crack pot team who were on the verge of relegation from England's 3rd division, bottom of the division after 10 games and well known short comings at Wembley. The turnaround shown that season was nothing short of a miracle. Before that game even kicked off, listening the the near 40,000 Unitedites belting out the GCB put a lump in my throat. It was a huge occasion. I'd never seen United score a goal at Wembley before that day... 19 minutes in, Jose Baxter steps up and fires United into the lead. Queue mass hysteria in the United end. Nearly 40,000 people lose their minds in the captial.

The game ultimately ended in defeat, but that didn't matter to me. My side went on to score 3 goals against a Premier League team. I'd been to watch United play in play off finals against Crystal Palace, Wolves, Burnley and Huddersfield and barely turn up in any of them. This was different. It was the first time I'd seen my team turn up in a big game and fucking take it to the opposition. We had no right to be in that game looking at the quality of the players on show, but my god they did me proud that day.

Completely agree with you ;)

football is about being consistant

so getting 100 points and being champions in a league of our peers
league one it maybe but thats the challenge we had
was the div 4 one but this was better

got to sing a song no owls sung for 60 years

champions

Rising to the bait for one post only. And yes raking over old ground as you know I tend to agree with you on quite a few aspects of how the game should be played.

However.

Imagine me going back in time to my 14 year old self.

"What are you getting excited for you silly twat? Don't you know we've just hoofed our way here with a dinosaur for a manager?

Doesn't matter that we've not been in this position since we were a twinkle our dad's eyes and we've followed this team for a decade without a thing to get excited about.

I know we're opening against the best team in England, but it's garbage non-football and I demand you give your ticket to Stegosaurus Steve next door who is too stupid to realise these facts.

Now sod off and do some homework whilst 30,000 blades are celebrating their return to the top flight.

Oh and don't bother trying to show any interest for a few years either as despite finishing in the top 10 of the elite of English football and and getting to Wembley for the first time in 60 years it's still Dinosaur Dave at the helm.

You can get interested again in a couple of decades or so when this bloke called David Weir comes along and gets us playing some scintillating stuff"

I understand what you say and I was much the same. Years and decades later, however, the collateral damage is generations of Blades who now think that’s the way to play and an enduring reputation, despite the last two years of evidence to the contrary, that indeed we do (still) play that way.

There were not 30,000 at the Liverpool game, then we got a pitiful 21,000 against Man City. There were plenty of people, my dad included, who voted with their absence in the Bassett years. That’s partly why there is a huge pro-hoof majority on here. Plenty of proper football fans stayed away.

As I say, DD was the right man at the right time and I followed the team all over the land in his era, but there was many a time when I silently thought ‘what the fuck was that?’ Once Deane was gone, through no fault of his own, Bassett really hadn’t a clue. His (lack of) style contemplated one way and one way only. Jostein Flo. Jostein Fucking Flo. The results began to reflect the dire anti-football and he was rightly sacked.

... memories of us regularly beating Arsenal, Liverpool and Manyoo, plus a derby double against the Massive.

We didn't beat Arsenal at all during that era.

You do realise that every single goal ever scored in the history of football was achieved by quite literally getting the ball forward.

Not own goals.

Like the OP my proudest moment was an FA Cup semi final which (obviously) we lost.

The game at Old Trafford in 2003 against Arsenal. They scored a jammy goal but we played them off the park in the second half. Their fans were desperate for the final whistle. And the support from the massed ranks at the end that we were attacking was relentless.

The experts in the MOTD studio had nothing but praise for the team and the fans.

We showed the footballing world that day what it means to be a Blade.

Tekking Ken Jnr to his first game - an evening match at Bramall Lane - and him being in awe.

17 years on he's still as mad as me about the Blades and even though he lives and works in Leeds it's allus special to meet up again for a beer and The Blades.

Watching us crush the mighty Arsenal at the Lane , culminating in TC sitting on the ball .

Singing " On Ilkley Moor Baht ' At " with my dad on the terrace at the (then ) mighty Newcastle when we knocked them out of the Cup in the 1950's .

grimsby away .. sabellas last game .. sang ‘you’ll never walk alone’ interrupted through half time for half an hour
one of the coppers with tears in his eyes said in 30 years he’d never seen anything like it ;)

Trouble is in those days we saw United muller the likes of Arsenal, Man U, Liverpool and it didn't even register at the time. We all knew that with the players we had and if they were on song we were capable of tearing anyone a new one. The one thing that was missing though was that we still didn't win anything. Even the cup runs in that era were fucking shite.

So my vote has to go to Warnock and Clough's cup runs which, especially as underdogs, was the only time in my lifetime where we looked like we had a sniff of actually winning something. That's what its all about isn't it?

One of the best saves I have seen by a goalkeeper ever though. Broke my fucking heart.

My proudest moment was last September, when we allowed the pigs back into the game, made them stick out their chins and hit them with a straight left and an uppercut.

Knocked-the-fuck-out!

Bounce on that, you pathetic, undeserved bastards.

Think I'd have to go with this as well. It's easy to feel proud when your team has won / achieved something but this was different. Probably exacerbated by the previous few years of crap, it was a great moment.

I have had a multitude of proud moments as a blades fan but I will dwell on 2.

The first is that Deano scored the first premiership goal. This is the moment that keeps on giving. It allows me to point out with pride that the blades have a recent history as well as a distant one.
The second moments are when I have brought friends over for the first time. On many occasions I have brought non blades fans to the lane and they have been hugely impressed by the stadium, fan base and the overwhelming sense of a proper football club. So much so that many of them are desperately keen to return year on year ( despite supporting other clubs).

Incidentally I was hoping for another proud moment this weekend when I bring another 2 fellas to the lane (1 is a bdtbl virgin). They were very keen to go on the stadium tour and find out more about the history of the club and the development of football in the city. You can imagine my disappointment when I contacted the ticket office and was informed that there are no plans for a tour this Saturday. They would have loved to sit in the directors box and listen to John Garrett wax lyrical about Sheffield as the home of football. Opportunity for another proud moment missed.

Fantastic to read those reports after all these years. Just looking at the league table I still have to pinch myself to believe we were top. Second highest crowd of the day as well. I must be just out of picture on the left of the photo at the top as I sat on row A seat 67 of the Bramall Lane stand.
