Thought I'd start a thread on this as it's getting a little lost in amongst the Egan thread. However, many are saying that Egan is here to take Stearman's position.

Not sure if I watched different games last season to many but I thought Stearman was fantastic for the back end of the season. He's probably our most accomplished CB. JOC and Bash are more versatile but as a proper CB, Stears is the best IMO.

Unfortunately for Basham, for me he's the one to drop out. Put in a fantastic shift though over the years.

Vote above too ^^

They’ll all get a good amount of games...Stearman does seem to pick up a few knocks over a season..

staying out of this i’ll leave it to Wilder and Knill.. they obviously have a ‘cunning plan’ ;)

Its a flawed question ,like someone being asked their first 11. Opposition ,injuries , suspensions ,illness, form all come into force making it a squad game these days ,very rarely do you get the same team 2 games running never mind regularly.

Egan in the middle. The defence wasn't brilliant 2nd half of last season so it's no surprise someone has come in. Basham is great at getting forward but his delivery into the box is generally poor, so perhaps Egan will be on the right as most appears to want. Let's hope the nett result is not coceeding silly goals.

A lot of the 'silly goals' were partially due to the way we play. With the full backs often not in the best position defensively when the opposition break quickly, it leaves us vulnerable. Whether changing the personnel will necessarily improve this, time will tell but it's as much about their position and awareness of the defence as a whole as actual individual ability. Tufty has made a big thing about Egan's leadership qualities and despite what the Brentford fans are saying, he does seem comfortable bringing the ball out of defence, something I for one am never particularly confident about with Bash.

I feel that Egan has been brought in to play in the middle of a back three but I guess what happens in training will determine that & I suppose it is feasible he could be on the right of the three if it works better with other personnel. I personally would prefer to see Bash there in the three at the expense of Stearman, he is probably not as technically proficient but has the heart of a lion & gives absolutely everything for the cause, while Stearman is too casual at times, can be bullied & it drives me nuts all the short passes with zero pace he makes to teammates, which has a knock-on effect & slows momentum going forward.
But I am not the manager & CW is & I trust him to get the best combination on the pitch.

Can't see Bash getting dropped, he's a Blade, over the years he's got better, and he puts everything out there every game, he may not be the best player in the team, not the most skillfull, but he wears his heart on his sleeve, he always does his best and puts a shift in.
Wilder knows this, and I can see him being subbed every so often, but he won't be dropped, I don't think anyway.

I just hope Egan and O'Connell hit the ground running, otherwise we're destined to concede umpteen soft-as-shit goals as per usual.

I disagree, Egan can’t play Bashams’ position and he obviously won’t take JOCs’ place so there’s only one place he can play, in Stearmans’ position. Injuries and suspensions will play a part so Stearman will get his chances but Wilder doesn’t do square pegs in round holes so it’s pretty obvious what he’ll do to me.

The only other conundrum could be Leonard playing where Bash plays. We might rotate more than last year as we clearly ran out of steam towards the end of the season, especially defensively, who don’t get me wrong, couldn’t have put any more effort in.

After listening to CW yesterday the only certain starter is Egan. We got bullied again at the back, it happened too often last season.

" John won't let that happen". CW wants some steel in there and dominance in the air. Oconnell has the LCB spot but Basham and Stearman will have to compete for the remaining place. There will be plenty of opportunity as its a long season and we overplayed Oconnell last season which contributed to us losing points in the last 6 games which cost us a play off place.

We have plenty of cover at CB and RCB but are still short on a natural replacement for JOC. Lafferty and Enda have covered there but as the Millwall goal at Home shows they are not natural CB's. It will be interesting to see how young Semple does up in Scotland as he has the potential to fill that spot.

Can't knock what you're saying about Bash but if we are to step forward this season, we can't be playing players who have less ability just because they leave everything on the pitch. It's a difficult one, do you play someone who is 7/8 every week ahead of someone who is probably better on their day.

I don't think a CB playing at RCB is necessarily a square peg in a round hole. I'm not sure Basham or JOC had had much experience playing as the wide CB's in a back 3 prior to the title winning season yet adapted well, no reason Egan couldn't do the same. Absolutely love Bash, but he's the weakest defender of the 3 from last season for me.

I agree but you need to train at it for a space of time to be able to adapt to it. We’ll soon see but I can’t see Wilder dropping Basham when he only dropped him for the birth of his child. Wilder loves Bash.

I don't know on what basis anyone expects Basham to be dropped.

Egan to play in the middle.

Basham/Leonard - Egan/Stearman - O'Connell/Wright/Lafferty
Well you can't play them all in a back three so somebody is going to be disappointed and as others have said it ain't going to be JOC or Egan, everybody loves and appreciates what Bash brings to the team his downfall maybe is that his versatility makes him a great player to have on the bench because of the number of positions he can play, it's happened over the years at other clubs as well, sad but true. We will see.

Totally agree, but over last season, Bash was better than Stearman overall.

For me, we have almost two back lines of three (just JOC not covered properly) and so much midfield defensive cover because of Bash and Lenny’s versatility. One more lwb needed and we could almost field 2 midfields. If Norrington-Davies proves his worth, we COULD be settled at the back and just need a tweak or two up front. I am sooooo looking forward to this season. COYRAWW’s!!!!!

Find out on Tuesday. Have to say though would be harsh on Stearman based in his performance at Mansfield.

Love Bash though.

Glad I don't have to make the choice.

Also if you're going on fee = in the team, then Stearman was last season's big signing at nearly £1million I think.

For all his endeavour Bash has too many mistakes in him and lacks the quality we need to push on, I do feel a lot of the fans let his workrate and his cult hero status get in the way of seeing the floors to his game. He needs to be a squad player this season as he’s excellent cover though.

I’m expecting RND to get a loan move.
Yeah I thought so too but, that was Brooks’ outlook last season and I was hoping that we had got a wonder kid who, if he’s good enough, he’s old enough sort of thing.

I thought I’d read on here somewhere from a fairly reputable source that the actual fee was nowhere near what had been quoted.

Probably was. Curse of 'undisclosed'.

I'll have to check Porktalk, we probably got him for a Twix and a packet of Quavers plus add-ons haha
