“Sheffield United fans could be entitled to a refund after a road closure near Bramall Lane forced drivers into a bus lane. Potentially dozens of motorists were automatically issued with fines for entering the London Road bus gate - despite police having shut Asline Road, leaving them no other option. Sheffield Council says it is now writing to those affected, letting them know they may be due a refund.
It admits that up to 50 drivers could have been wrongly penalised on Saturday, January 27, following the Blades' 1-0 home victory over Preston North End in the fourth round of the FA Cup. At £60 a pop, without the discount for early payment, that means up to £3,000 could have been unfairly generated. Anyone who paid up after being fined for entering the gate between 4.46pm that day and 5.16pm, when the closure was lifted, may be owed that money back.”
