This forum actually existed before the 6th of August, and there are more than a few posters on here who never went near BU, or tried it once and didn't like it.

Is there anything else that I've not read that means I'm not a Blade? Some bizarre graffiti on Tony Currie's shed? A tattoo on Jimmy Hagan's gran's dog?

Any other debates from now-deceased forums I've never read that I need to be aware of, in order that I can call myself a Blade?

I know there are a lot of ex-BU posters on here, but those of us who never read any of the postings on there might not be aware of the old in-jokes, so please can we have just a little explanation before we read some random stuff we don't understand?

We don't want to be accused of not being Blades just because we didn't read a now-extinct forum.

As an existing group i think we have welcomed the new influx well. Since then the additional activity on here is amazing and the exposure that the forum is getting is quite remarkable. As i mentioned breifly to Foxy on Saturday there were approx 8 people around me alone that mentioned the site and forum (Not to me, i was eaves dropping) and commented on how good this place is, to the extent that they believe this to be the "Official" forum.

I think as a whole we need to be more explanitory when posting something that will not always be understood straight away by those not "IN" with the joke/wording.

As we've all come together now we dont want to have 2 groups on here, with BU and non-BU, we can all get along im sure

We're all blades aren't we? (Sorry Cliche i know) :D
 
I think thats really good comment SV. After BU closed, it looks like the majority of posters have turned up here. All the little in-jokes have come with us too and you're right, its all too easy to just forget that there was already a vibrant community here, minding your own business, until 100 refugees arrived on the doorstep, like two coachloads of German tourists at the hotel. I am making efforts to avoid the injokes myself after my 'papering over the cracks' comment after Saturday, but it will take timeand understanding both ways. I'd urge all my fellow ex-BU'ers to be similarly thoughtful. When Linz said 'make yourselves at home', I dont think she meant we could re-arrange the furniture.

As for Lenners, his particular view on life and the Blades is a bit sad to read, to be honest. I still can't work out if he's trying to wind people up, or if he is really serious when he posts, in which case he needs therapy more than anyone I've ever known. My suggestion is to ignore him. If we win again tomorrow, he might just start having some of his famous 'computer problems'* anyway...

*BU In-joke No.14 - Len's absence from the forum after good performances is put down to 'computer problems'. When we lose, he will make 75 posts in 2 hours, all broadly the same...

It might take a while for everyone to integrate properly, but to be honest, Foxy and I have had fewer issues to deal with than we thought we might have... and most of them were strictly admin issues to do with passwords and questions asking how to do something particular with the forum.

I've read comments, both public and in emails/PMs to me, that the 300 (and counting) new members appreciate the atmosphere we have around here. I'm keen that whatever happens, this atmosphere prevails. Some have already commented on the difference in how this place is administrated and run. Well, the forum has just celebrated its fourth birthday so we know the way we do things works :) Whether the new members like that or not, Foxy and myself have no intention to change the way we do things. We're not saying we don't listen or take on feedback, but we have to take the whole community into account when we make changes. Therefore, we'll only look to integrate changes which benefit the whole community and these are only implemented when we have an update or some other planned outage so as not to inconvenience people unnecessarily. If you have a suggestion which you think fits this bill, pop it in the Comments, Suggestions and Problems forum and we'll take it into consideration.

We've had a few comments complaining about the layout of the forum and how different it is from BU. All I can say to these people, politely and respectfully, is tough :)

This forum uses vBulletin software that we have a paid licence for because we consider it to be the best around, both in terms of stability and user-friendliness. There are a number of different options you can change as an individual to adjust how the forums are displayed, but we do not plan to move away from vBulletin any time soon. For one, we have a number of years still remaining on the licence. It's just going to have to be something you get used to I'm afraid.

One of the main complaints people had about BU was that off-topic posts were mingled in with the rest. This is not a problem we have as individual subject area forums have grown up as and when they are required. If you have any suggestions for new forums you would like to see, do let us know. We are keen not to become a massive page of forums that are rarely used, but this has to be balanced against the ease of readers to find exactly what they are looking for.

The last message I have echoes that of SV, all members, new and old, need to take into consideration everyone when posting. There isn't a cliquey atmosphere around here, because we try and make it as easy as possible for everyone to join in the conversation. We now have people who never looked at Bladesunited, people who lurked but never dared to post on Bladesunited and the majority of the hardcore members of Bladesunited.

Well, you're all here now... so I guess you're all "forum members" :)

And as ever, if you need Foxy or myself, we might take a little while getting back to you, but we will respond as best we can and as soon as we can!
 
What I love about our community, is that someone else raised this point before I needed to :)

Whilst we welcome ex-BU members with open arms, it goes with the caveat that it is good for the community as a whole and we don't turn into an "us and them" style situation.

We are one community, regardless of our origins and previous friendships.

We don't want cliques, we don't want people seperating into "clappers" and "knockers", we just want a community where everyone is free to express their opinions in the right way.

As always, we welcome all our members to join in with everything we do, whether it be meeting up for a pint before the match or having a kick about on a Sunday. It may sound a little "fluffier" than elsewhere, but it is the way we operate and a theory that has served us well.

This forum is infinitely better than BU in every respect and I would like to say a big thank you to Linz, Foxy and all of the regulars for welcoming us. :)
 
Well i for one think this place is great! the layout is far superior to that prehistoric cesspit that BU was (i love vBull!).

It's moderated much better and just goves off such a nicer community vibe!
 
Goes without saying that this board is definitely better than BU in terms of layout and functionality. I'll leave it a couple of months before I start banging on about phpBB mind :p

BU was so antiquated it was ridiculous and while I was never naughty enough to warrant a ban, the amount of censorship on there was stunning - especially when it came to OT content.

Anyway, glad to be here and happy to leave the clapper card at the door. Until Curtis and True arrive of course...

The reason we didn't go with phpBB is that there were some massive security flaws at the time we were first starting up which, to my knowledge, failed to be addressed in any update until very recently.

Admin accounts were extremely easy to gain access to with the right exploits, and seeing as we've had a few people trying to gain access (those bloody Bolivian hackers for one!) we've stayed with vB because as yet, no one has succeeded in getting through :)

As far as I can see in the comparisons, vB can do everything phpBB can, so if there's a feature you particularly like on phpBB boards which doesn't look to be around here, let us know and we'll have a look to see if it is a feature we just haven't activated yet :)
 
VBulletin is the daddy and always has been :)

PHPBB is better than it used to be, but it's not good enough to take the crown just yet.

ha, don't worry, I'm only kidding on phpBB. I see very little difference between the two systems and I'd never suggest migrating software when one is working so well :)
 
I'd also like to extend a word of thanks, both to mods and forum members, for welcoming former bu members with open arms.
 

As this i becoming a big 'love-in' I thought i'd add my gratitude to Linz, Foxy, Silverfox etc for being so nice and welcoming. I've been around on here for around a year now and they've been nothing short of great. Meeting a number of forum members at Wembley was also nice...the image of a very upset Linz on the concourse at Full Time will live with me forever, she looked like i felt!

Thanks all, and i'll hopefully see you in the Lion sooner rather than later!

Excellent post Linz. I am not a massive contributer on message boards but do like the opportunity to post a comment when im 'in the mood'. I do however like to read through some stuff from time to time. What i hated about BU was a closed shop. Because of this some of the posters developed quite a clique and it was difficult to sift through all the rubbish and wind-ups to read some of the good stuff - and there was some on there.

I'll be honest, i never even knew this site existed before i googled around for blades message boards when BU closed. However, ive found it to be an excellent site. Bladesmad seems full of kids and keyboard warriors. Also its format is far too random and abstract for me. The layout and format of this board is excellent. Although, obviously, i dislike all things Wednesday lol, the Owlstalk site is an example of how a fooball message board should be. This site is at least as good as that in my opinion.

So keep up the good work, even though my posts will probably be few, I will continue to follow lurk on this site i reckon. :eek:
 
Its fair to say I agree that all the ex BU members that have come to this forum have integrated well and we are all appearing to be one big happy family so far... And the increase in activity on the site has been tremendous ( I can hardly keep up with the new posts each day)
But I also think it needs to remain that way, I can't stand cliques, I've also recommended this forum to a more than a few Blades mates of mine, i hope to see them on here soon. UTB
 
Although not a former BU'er, this site was recomended to me by one who was.

Very impressed so far.

The only real clique on BU was the "whatever Len says we have to disagree" clique that Len cultivated for all it was worth. Perhaps giving him and them their own little area would be the answer.

More than one clique. It was a members only forum that unless you were accepted into the clique then you never ever got a reply. I for one am glad it's gone and the egos have been deflated. Hopefully the cliquey "we wont answer you cos you're not in our gang" will learn a bit of humility and realise that there are more United fans than the few dozen who used that site.
 
I never bothered much with BU, nor did I with Blades-Mad. Both forums seemed to be at completely different ends of the spectrum, with little middle ground. This forum seems to be a lot more varied, seeing as it's got people from before BU ceased to be, some from BU itself & a couple from Blades-Mad.

Oh, and the lay-out is much better than BU/BM as well!
 
Just to echo what Foxy said, cheers for the feedback. We're not infallible though so don't be afraid of raising things with us :)

I think the layout of this forum gives rise to more inclusive debates... unless quotes are used, it isn't clear who exactly is being answered so it's a little harder to feel ignored :)

What we would suggest to members, to ensure their posts are read, is to make sure they post their message in the correct forum and try watch their spelling if they can :)
 
Must admit, never heard of BU until the message about it closing. This is my home, and lately not understood quite a few things been said, but put it down to the new people knowing each other, and the in jokes.

That said there are lots of friends here, and the in jokes have been kept to a minimum lately. It's great here, people are welcoming, there's no need to mock someone because they maybe don't understand your ramblings and vague topics.

SV is a great guy from what I know, I'm glad he brought it up. There's been so much to debate here lately, it's become lively and enjoyable. Hope it stays that way :)
 
Just to raise it, i think what we need to be careful of is duplicate posts in different areas too, there seems to be a lot of duplicates of the same subject.

For instance, there is a lot of chat about upcoming matching in the general area, when there is a specific thread for each game in the Match Threads section.

Just thought i'd make that observation.
 
Without arse-licking too much i think this is the best Blades forum there is at the moment.

I was never than keen on it at first, and thought it was aimed towards the younger posters but i think in the time it has been running the younger posters on here have matured a bit and it has developed this place in to a forum where there is plenty of healthy debate, and the influx from BU will help develop things further when a lot of the older guard get in to the swing of things on here.
 
I think most of what I thought has already been said.

The word humility has been mentioned and I think goes a long way on forums such as this.

I do think that when people get to know each other, even as just a poster, you will always get a few "in jokes". I think an explanation goes a long way if anyone gets confused by such things.

I think the idea of meeting up can be daunting for some but it's still the best way to get to know people.

We need a few for for forum footy on Sundays and anyone is welcome to buy me a pint tomorrow night at The Lion!
