Speaking as confirmed geriatric, I rather like the term 'Ladies'. To me it offers a degree of respect, very often undeserved it has to be said.

‘Ladies” is respectful but it’s a condrascending word re-affirming that they are the weaker/ fairer sex.
But “gentlemen” is also respectful we we don’t use that word in football.

Both words “ladies” and “gentlemen” are quite old fashioned and not used so much these days.
Tend to be used for older people, like a men’s crown green bowling team would be called”gentleman” and the women “ladies”.

Regarding being self sufficient/self funded, we may as well say that the juniors and U18, U23s; should also be. All part of the brand and the family, and I don't mind bathing in reflected glory should any of them achieve success.

I’d imagine if Wendy start a women’s side, Chansiri will be looking to bend the rules and bring over some star players from Bangkok.

That would make the prospect of a penalty shootout eyewateringly different.

Interesting that McCabe and Prince are expected to inject more funds than are generated by the men's team then.

Look, I'm not for one instant suggesting that we should take important monies away from the first team to subsidise the women. But, there's an argument that funding the women's team now may pay dividends for the club as a whole in the future should we challenge for silverware and sustain some level of attendances.

It's not a case of equality for equality's sake.

That’s the big problem though.
I’m sure the ladies games runs at a loss and hardly generates any income.

Average gates range from 700 to 2,500 in the top division but think they charge £5 admission.

Last week the BBC reported that the Woman’s FA Cup final broke the all time UK attendance club record at 45, 423.
Sounds impressive, but it was 2 local teams Arsenal v Chelsea
And tickets were priced at £5 for adults and free for kids.

However there is an argument that women’s football should be supported and subsidised by the men’s game.
When I was a kid in the early 80’s most girls at school hated football, it’s was very much a male dominated crowd.
These days when I go to the Lane it amazes me how many young kids and especially girls go to our games.

The reason why our attendances are increasing might be done to more and more women and girls attending matches.
For me more the merrier to make up the Blades family.

The attendances at the Lane were certainly male dominated. I wonder if in the 1960's there were any Ladies Toilets on the Kop.

Chuck them cash? Not a chance. Exactly why I am not a fan of this. Even the biggest support bases in the women's game are non league levels right now. So when would they ever make a legit return on investment?

Think on. When they and their female friends have children we shall have more Blades fans. Run as many teams as possible !

Anything that broadens the reputation and appeal of the club has to be a good thing. The money it will cost to support them will be I suspect pretty small change even if they do go semi professional as is mooted.
On the continent teams are regularly multi sport with basketball teams, volleyball and all sorts of other things. It’s about being part of the wider community and as many people as possible having an affinity to the club.
I know some of the responses on here are (I hope) tongue in cheek but if not you need to take a look at yourself and check the date on your newspaper- we left the nineteenth century a while ago lads.

It is possible not to be interested in women's football and not be a misogynist or "stuck in the 19th century".

When I used to referee I did the odd ladies game . Got to say the language made park football seem tame. Always remember one complaining to me she'd been kicked in her fanny. Some of the more brutal defenders were no shrinking violets. Some looked like hulk hogan but butcher All the good looking ones were attackers.

I agree about the Beeb. Plus it seems to be yet another area of football that gets coverage in the Guardian way beyond what it deserves when you consider how many people are interested in it, like the leagues in Australia and the US, compared to the crumbs the football league gets.
