Sky Sports understands a host of clubs are chasing Shrewsbury Town striker James Collins.

Collins, who finished as the Shrews' top scorer with 16 goals this season, is out of contract this summer and has yet to agree fresh terms.

Shrewsbury have offered Collins a new deal as they look to keep hold of the player following their promotion from League Two.

However, a number of sides are waiting in the wings to lure the Republic of Ireland Under-21 international away from the Greenhous Meadow Stadium.

Watford, Coventry and Sheffield United are all thought to be admirers of the former Aston Villa youngster and are weighing up moves this summer.

No chance then if Watford are after him. We wont match their wage offer

I like that shout, exactly what we need in the middle. But wages would be an issue.

He's exactly what we need but can't afford would have been worth a fair few extra points last season to have a real experienced leader in the side last season

Money's the issue of course, and given the demands of the promotion chasing pack in the Championship Collins will definitely have a few suitors.

What he'd bring would be a wealth of experience, an uncompromising attitude, an abundance of defensive and organisational nous, etc...even if it cost more than we'd currently be willing to pay.....well if promotion was secured as a result of this signing then it would repay itself a few times over.

Not for me. Its speedy attacking CB's we need. Cloggers only back ups.

Agree to an extent but the stats show stearman and basham are way down the list in terms of aerial duals won. We conceded A lot of sloppy goals last year - rather than being broken down by good football.

To me that suggests another dominant centreback is required.

This x1000.

Back end of the season went tits up, not because we couldn't score - more that we couldn't keep a clean despite having 5 defenders on the pitch!

Those saying CF is our priority haven't really been watching have they....

it’s a shame Millwall didn’t get relegated as their centre backs are exactly what we need. Big strong and won everything in the air.
Would probably be hard to tempt them now

We did not have five defenders on the pitch that has been our problem
We played with five in midfield

He’s not really a reject though

He’s not being offered a new deal by West Ham when his contract expires. Isn’t that a reject?
If not, please let me know how you define ‘reject’. Genuinely interested to know.

He’s not a premiership reject in the same sense that Ibrahimovic wasn’t a premiership reject for being released at the end of last season.

Cardiff, Huddersfield, Brighton, Fulham/Villa will all be considering Collins because he’s a perfectly capable premiership player.

We’d be lucky to get him but wages and probable premiership football will put paid to that.

Those who wouldn’t consider Collins a mark up on what we have are absolutely mental, sorry

And if Collins is a premiership reject I’m afraid Stearman is a championship reject because it didn’t seeen we had to fight teams off to land him

The term reject is an absolute load of bollocks by and large.

In fact, Iniesta can fuckoff aswell.

Been released by WHU. Decent player would still be good at championship level despite age. Worth a punt?

He'd fit in brilliantly, we are screaming out for someone like him. Others who would fit the bill would be Wes Morgan or even Sol Bamba who I can't see fitting into a premiership side. All would do a job as has John Terry for Villa. Another possibility would be Jags but he would have to go L or RCB with JOC in the middle. He would run riot if he was given the same role as JOC or Edna had last season doing the overlaps.

Not for me, chaps. To me it just seems to smack of the short-termist policies that got us into trouble in the first place. I’d prefer us to sign up and coming players rather than those on the way down.

In what world could we afford his wages?

How has this thread got to 2 pages - complete non-starter

Past it, would want too much, upset the balance of the squad. Bloody silly suggestion unles we want to go back to porterfields Dads army.

I'm fed up of hearing 'would upset the balance of the squad' and 'we need to give Wilder more money' as the two directly counteract each other.

Do we want better players, which generally do command better wages, or do we want to continue signing players on bottom 3 wages who won't improve the squad but keep the 'harmony'?

Better players demand more money.
James Collins at his age demanding his money would upset the balance of the squad

They dont directly contradict eachother in my opinion.

You can increase your wage budget and sign better players without upsetting the balance.

Collins, who is apparently earning £35000, would likely be our highest earner by some margain.

I agree that Collins would be very expensive, but i fell it is worth nothing that in a matter of days time, Collins wage won't be £35,000 p/w - it will be £0 per week.
