Maguire going to the World Cup

Understand the sentiment but buying and selling players and valuations is all in the timing.
At the time most people agreed the Maguire and Walker sales were good deals for us.

Let’s imagine David Brooks is going to be a top international for Wales
Also let’s imagine that the transfer market is going to get even bigger in 5 years time, where 100 million signings are the norm.

If Spurs offered us 25 million for Brooks this Summer.
Should we say no it’s too low and then put Brooks salary up to £40K a week.
At this moment in time we can’t afford to pay 40K a week wages and it could ruin the club financially.

Also remember Maguire had shown loyalty to Sheff Utd by being our best player and best defender in league 1.
Whilst ever we were in league 1, we were holding him back and ruining his career.
He had become too good and outgrown league 1 It made no difference what we offered him, he desperately needed to move.

If we had gained promotion to the Championship then I reckon he’d have stayed.
He wasn’t getting game time in the PL with Hull. With a big pay rise he’d have still progressed with us in the Championship.

Also let’s not forget for every Maguire and Walker, there’s a Jordan Slew and Di Gerelamo.
Hindsight is a wonderful thing.
Literally nobody thought getting £3 million for Kyle Walker was a good deal at the time, other than McCabe. I don't know what you're remembering but it was extremely obvious to everyone how good he was going to be and that the money we got for him was a sliver of his future value.

GLTTL

(Walker and Cahill too :) )
Sorry, but I don't class Cahill as a 'Blade' in the same sense as the other two. Spent part of a season on loan from Villa, who then sold him to Everton, not much of a Blades heritage there at all. Great footballer and bloke though.

If you would have told me when Maguire was playing for us that one day he would be playing for England id have said you were barking mad!

Never thought he would step up to this level and always thought he lacked the pace for the premier league nevermind international level, old lead boots has certainly proved me wrong!

I actually think if he plays he'll be a bit like Jags at the last World Cup - not quite good enough to deal with the top tier players like Suarez. Hopefully we'll get to see him in action and I hope I'm wrong.
