It was a deserved presentation of a BAFTA to Motty last night.

Congratulations to Sean Bean for his BAFTA. In his acceptance speech he made reference to his mate 'Gary Armstrong'. Anyone know if there was a Blades link in that?

Back to Motty (I think it was him) in probably the 1977 FA Cup final. Martin Buchan the Man. Utd. captain goes up to collect the cup......

'And Buchan climbs the 39 steps'.
Yes they grew up together and were best mates. Gary became an academic and wrote books on football whilst Sean went to study actiing at RADA.

When I’ve heard Paul Walker on the championship commentating he comes across as very good imo. A bit of pashun to his commentary.
Paul Walker is a great commentator, I like listening to the guy they have on BT Sport, no idea what his name is. He's doing the comms here;

Am I the only one who thinks he became a sycophantic bore with a permanent drool wherever the Premier League (especially the big boys) were concerned. And as for his England commentaries, his tongue was so far up Trevor Brookings arse that he could probably taste what Brooking ate for lunch! I don't think I'll miss him at all.

Barry Davis and Brian Moore were streets ahead IMHO.

Oh, and Keith Macklin of course:)

You’re forgetting the best ever, Danny Blanchflower on ITV, « Chance.....chance......chance... » all he ever used to say

I was always a bit of a fan of David Coleman. Notable verbal cock-ups, but that simple one-nil when a goal was scored with no flourish, just state the score. He was a victim of his own versatility, doing many different sports and of course QOS.

When Coleman was doing the commentary on any game it was given a gravitas that no other commentator has ever been able to match, he had the most authoritative voice there's been in football broadcasting.

Motson's anally-retentive style I always found irritating, however that youtube clip from Fantasy Football of him commentating on a Germany game during Euro 96 is without question THE funniest Colemanball in history.

Like Jon Bon Il I liked Hugh Johns who always did the Midlands games on ITV. Corner, left side.

Still my favourite ever quote from him was the steel city derby at Hillsborough this season. "And the blades have destroyed the cunting pigs!"

Agree he's a quality commentator on Radio and TV is Darren Fletcher - but by all accounts from people who know of him round here he's a bit of a big I am nob head. Claimed to be a massive Forest despite being a Man U glory hunter, then gotba job at MUTV and said it was his dream job as a Red - now he's a director at Notts County. Like the Warnock of the airwaves!

Peter Drury currently the best for me. This piece of commentary, off the cuff when Roma came back to beat Barca 3 nil with a last minute goal is just wonderful.

He also has a bad habit of over romanticising his sentences in the style of Peter Drury and Gabriel Clarke.

Who's the guy who always used to commentate on our matches during the 90s and 00s, is it John Helm?

He always used to be on those shitty ITV highlights shows early on a Sunday morning.

As long as I live I'll never be able to see names like Simon Tracey and Rob Kozluk without reading them in his voice.

Motty's become a bit of a caricature of himself.
But Martin Tyler's "..and it's live!!!" really gets on my nerves. Wonder if he does it in real life? "I'm having my breakfast ... and it's live!!!".

Liked Motty as a commentator got right on my threepenny bits in the Man U cup game insisting on calling Roger Neison .... Row-ger Neilson

The best commentator was the guy in the late 80s who did the Blades videos.

“It’s there Yesss”

Darrel Bentley! The lost chuckle brother! (check out Life With The Blades on YouTube and he's a dead ringer for them!)

Re the professionals, surprised Ian Crocker hasn't been mentioned yet. He was the commentator on many of the matches during the Triple Assault season on Sky Sports, and his voice is synonymous with Brownie's screamer against the Pigs, and Pesch's "Oh My God" moment v Forest. He now does the Scottish Premiership and was great on the Glasgow Derbies.

Somebody here mentioned Hugh Johns as well.. instead of Coleman's "ONE-NIL!", he was the exponent of "ONE-NOTHING!".

And yep, I know they are both eggchasing, but you have got to love these bits of commentary because of their bias.. Mick Morgan's the first clip...and an old mate of mine, Rob Chadwick is the other....
