Recently Befriended an Argie River Plate supporter. the guy is a season ticket holder at Estadio Antonio Vespucio Liberti (yes Copy and pasted it)

He knows Im a blade and says its not uncommon to see people wearing blades shirts to games.

Don't know if anyone cares, but its the type of nonsense I have a lot of time for.

May start being more active in my support of River Plate :)

I saw River Plate at the Lane after Argentina had won the World Cup

Some great footballers on show.

I think Silent Blade has some knowledge of this match.

They beat us 2-1 by the way and quite a few of the RP lads played for Argentina. Ortis, Filliol and Passarella are some I (think) I remember - SB will put me straight ;)

Edit - he's beaten me to it :D

Can't hop on board, myself. I really really want to visit La Bombonera at some point in my lifetime. Looks an incredible ground/atmosphere.

We're fannying about over trying to get super-duper-safe standing...those Boca buggers are stood at a reyt angle on the top tier!

The connection with us is Sabella of course. They have some decent team shirts. Current 1st and 3rd look good (had a quick trawl).

isn't this one easy? - our home kit is very close to their away kit ..... especially this year so they may well choose ours over their's if they don't like their version one year or if our's is cheaper (which I own seems hard to believe).

AND there is the Sabella connexion too of course.

Mind you, I've done the same thing, I own an Olympiakos Shirt because when I bought it, it was an affordable version of ours.

Why would they wear our shirts?

I know we played them late 70’s, is it because of the Alex Sabella connection?

  • 30/08/78. Grand challenge match. River Plate’s first visit to England. 2-1 to the visitors in front of 22244. The match was organised as part of the deal that took Alejandro Sabella to Bramall Lane.
The River Plate team: 1: Ubaldo Filliol; 2: Roberto Perfumo; 3: Pablo Cosellos; 4: Eduardo Saporiti; 5: Reinaldo Merlo; 6: Daniel Passarella; 7: Pedro Gonsales; 8: Victor Merchati; 9: Leopoldo Luque; 10: Norberte Alonso; 11: Oscar Ortiz

Forty Years ago .......

One of the chuffs shot from just inside our half, over near the John Street Dugouts, and it flew in our net at the Bramall Lane End

Thats how I remember it anyway ......

The 5 River Plate players that played for Agentina in the 1978 World Cup played at the Lane that night. Only Alonso didn't play in the final

I was there, Alonso and Gonsales looked a class above and were only playing at 50%. Luque, who had been one of the stars of the World Cup, looked reight bothered by it all.

Perfumo was Argentina's captain in the 1974 World Cup

Played in that infamous match at Wembley in 1966 (standing on left)

We're fannying about over trying to get super-duper-safe standing...those Boca buggers are stood at a reyt angle on the top tier!

I think it may be safer to stand on a steep terrace? Because you don't press forward into the person in front and your chest and head are above him too.... the worst crushing incident at a football ground in England was on a gentle downwards slope through the tunnel at Leppings Lane and on the shallow terrace below it.

Also - It is for this reason that I cannot see how "safe-standing" can be installed on our Kop, is it unsafe to stand there now?

I was more pointing out the fact it was a steep terrace on a top tier, really. Not one for those with vertigo!

My shins after a last minute winner would tell you yes. If they could talk, that is.

Funny how we see things differenty after 40 years , i was amazed with Leopoldo Luque` s skill for a big man , however i was young and probably a bit star struck , as i was with Dougie Brown .

I have several Olympiacos shirts.

I spend a fair bit of time in Greece and whilst a few of the people I know support Panathanaikos most are Olympiacos fans.

You should see the rivalry in the small village I go to in Crete when they play each other at basketball!

I don't wear Olympiacos or Blades shirts in Crete any more, ever since I was spat at by a guy in a green tea shirt in Agios Nikolaos whilst wearing a Blades shirt.

I would have thought Estudiantes were more your cup of tea, their fans are a right set of nutters....;)

I would've liked more to have come out of that brief link we had with them actually. Bit of an anti-climax when Sabella couldn't make it for the friendly.

Don't get me wrong, even half-arsed he was miles better than anyone in a Blades shirt and you could see his superior technique. But he didn't seem fussed about it all.

Authentic River Plate shirts are ridiculously hard to come by in Europe - as I found out whilst trying to source their 17/18 away shirt. Got there in the end. Based on a mid 90’s number they wore and using the same design as the infamous ‘bruised banana’ Arsenal jersey.
