As the first team battled at The Lane our U23s had a strange KO time of 2pm today.

Slow start today but on top throughout with the spine of the side Semple, Slater, Gilmour and Smith holding the team together.

Gilmour and Smith the scorers today.

Special mention to Harvey Gilmour for a non stop work rate, never off the ball.

Further mention to Callum Semple. Getting better each game back after injury. Distribution, Headers and game management were all first class.

Not sure what will happen next season but the four of the team I call the spine all need first team football to develop them to the next stage. 23s looks easy for them.

Not sure the path these 4 will take but they need to be playing against men who have mortgages to pay and win bonuses to be had..... I hope club can see the same.

It is hard to say. He missed a year with injury so he is just back playing games.

If Heneghan is still learning the game at 23 years old as a center back, as Wilder says, then I think Semple is one loan season away from being promoted to a first team squad spot.

That loan could be National League, L1 or L2.

It is just about him playing competitive games each week, training in a first environment each day and maturing.

This goes for Gilmour and Ty Smith also. They need the same.

In my opinion Semple would find National League or L2 too easy.... he has grown into a right unit who is very gifted on the ball...... never plays below 8 out of 10.

As I said though, Gilmour and Smith are equally ready for nasty mans football.

Another 'Mind the Gap' situation.

How do the lads make the big break-through with us when we hope to be challenging for promotion again?

Loan to L1 clubs for each I suppose.

I forgot Colchester actually scored with penalty with the last kick of the game....

2 1 final score.

Agree with everything said. A decent win 2 - 0 (sorry Phil 2 - 1) Defence and mid field held it together but our wide players seem to have difficulty controlling the ball. Two fine goals and a sloppy penalty helped but Mallon was removed, looked like he may have an injury. Not good now that the cup semi final at Swansea is due on the 30th , I think. Strangely to say our young keeper did block a shot. And no Travis today so all a bit on the quiet side

Semple is a big unit Woody like the spurs loaneee this season wouldn't have any trouble with the physical side of the game.
Morgan used to rave about him said he was six months away from first team,he then did his ACL so lost a year.It looks like he has found his feet quickly since he got fit again,Could challenge O'Connell for the left centre back next season, hes highly thought of within the club

We have a vital Championship game and people are watching the U-23s?

Weird.

By the way, and for the umpteenth time, what the young tyros ‘need’ is immaterial. It’s what Sheffield United need that matters.

You miserable git.....

It’s a forum to talk about all aspects of the club and the players paid to represent the club.
We are talking about how to progress young players so that in 12 months they may be in a position to help the first team, if good enough.

If they are not, they move on.

Do you think our first team players just popped up from fuck knows where ready and able to play in our first team?

No, they went through the very same process as our young players do. Go on loan, play u18s, play 23s etc. The difference is some of us like to discuss it and some people like to comment and have a general interest.
If your not interested ...... why fucking comment.....

As for weird watching the 23s, I had to work until 2pm so could not make the first team game, so as a SUFC fan decided to watch our U23s.

Is that weird? No. Just enjoying all aspects of our club.

You might get a few long responses to your post. For me, like a good number of scouts from other clubs, I enjoy watching talented young players play without fear. The question now is how do these players take the next step to enable them to progress their career, most of them would love it to be with their beloved United. Experience shows their future could be away from Sheffield.

Like many Bladey Boybanders you pay little regard to the reality that it’s up to the players to prove themselves good enough. If they are, they’ll make their way in the game. It’s not for United to build pathways or give runs. We owe young unproven players absolutely nothing. The debt is entirely the other way round. Perhaps if young De Juve and his daft dad had realised this unwelcome truth he might have made a footballer?

I wonder if Pinchy has ever had a street lamp come through his bedroom window ? :)

I see the living on other people's past glories Bladey Tribute Act are on the road again...

The club invest time and money on the players they pay to play for the club. Do you agree?

When they sign a new player the club decide what they need to do to get said player ready for the first team.whether that be more training on fitness, more experience on loan, player needs more time to grow ( Brookes ), plus many other things. So Chris Wilder signs players he feels can grow into first team players. Do you agree?

Then why on earth do you disagree that players produced by the academy and who have been given pro contracts on Chris Widers, not be given the same time and resources to reach the same goals?

You harp on about De Juves dad, little Reedy, Boybanders, blah blah blah. You have no logic to your comments, Only sarcastic bile.

Have you had a bad experience of a sufc youth or young pro player in the past. Did one of them piss on your tulips? Did a family member get released from the academy at some point? Are you in some way jealous of parents whose son has a chance to get paid to play for the club you claim to love?

My guess is that you have the persona of being a miserable git and you just enjoy being a prize dick.

Now that is weird. Very weird and even a little disturbing.....

Pinchy
I'm a bridge builder. But, I don't want to waste your time. Would it help if I named 11 Academy/U18/U23 "graduates" who I feel would make a very decent SUFC Championship team?

I'd be genuinely interested in that, so fire away. I have not seen the youth team much this season, but have in the past. Brooks was the stand out player when he was in the team, seemed more aggressive in that set up than he does in the first team.

No Grappler - my offer was just a device to suck Pinchy into the trap partly set by Redhead

The 11 Academy/U18/23 Graduates who would make a good SUFC Championship side are, in no particular order
Blackman Baldock Stevens Fleck O'Connell Basham Lundstram Clarke Stearman Evans Brooks.

A cunning trap to make the point that EVERY SUFC player will at some point have played age group football. None of them were born fully formed. The realities are that they all benefitted from "the pathway".

I doubt me n Pinchy are far apart. I speak to a lot of supporters at SUFC U18 & U23 games. Most I speak to have the same basic view - players need to be good enough if they are too progress.

It's just that Pinchy has decided everyone with an interest in Academy football must want players stuck up to the First Team when they're not ready.

I'd prefer it if he'd recognise the common ground.

Understood, any

Understood. Well I for one enjoy reading about the youth teams, so you and Redhead and Baw_Head and Treeton, etc., please carry on.

And also carry on with the beer tasting notes. While it is not wildly exciting, I had a nice Voyager IPA last week, and a nice straightforward Oat Stout from Exit 33 yesterday.

I saw that Exit 33 Stout in The Portland House on Saturday. They'd had an Exit 33 Tap Takeover. But, i plumped for two of the hoppier paler ones.
I finished the night off with Voyager IPA #8 on cask (Nelson Sauvin Galaxy Simcoe). It was very nice. But the one that sticks more in my memory was the Sorachi, Lime & Enigma Voyager. Quite unusual - but delicious.

I have untapped on my phone but never used it yet. Portland house is ok, hope the new lads make a go of it, usually have a couple there, then walk to the Ale Club and then walk to the Itchy Pig, bit of a trek but good beers in all three.
