Ridiculous dropped points

The turning point for our season was for me Burton away.
That game imo was the largest defeat of the season, it was bye bye Couts and welcome Lundstrum and from then on it was like watching one mistake after another.
Not just from one man but the whole team ( you can't repair a rolex by putting in a woncky cogg and expect it to keep perfect time )

Although Coutts' absence was a big factor at the time and responsible for the immediate dip in results, we've had plenty of time since plus a JTW to sort that one out. Someone correct me but we seem to have a different midfield out every week and whichever one we start with is not the one we finish the game with. Then there is the $64k question about Holmes, wtf. So yeah, Coutts absence has hit us for six but not quite in the simple terms most people envisage.

We were never going to replace Coutts. To start with we don't have the money for a replacement, let alone finding one.

His speed of thought made us more dangerous in attack.

He's right though.
he is. but if Webber hadn't have it that fucking post the dumb cunt..;)
when i was a kid i used to sneak onto beauchief golf course with my mates. i beat myself up about one crap shot that cost me a 7 on the long 7th that i was useless for the rest of the round. i learned to forget it and move on. it's better in the long run
we need snookers (c) Bashar but (amazingly) we are still in this. i predicted seventh at the beginning of the season. it's how we roll.

We had some money available in the JTW and it was squandered on two midfielders and a striker who never play. We could and should have done better than that.

I just feel incredibly sad for a group of players who work their knackers off week after week, many of whom may never get this close to Promotion again, that for the want of an extra 1% they are not going to get the reward their efforts deserve.

The thing is I can think of numerous games where we could or should have won but didn't. Cannot think of many we have won where I have come away and thought we didn't deserve that. Normally these things even themselves out but don't think they have this season.

I agree. We wouldn't have got a ready made Coutts replacement (based on his form before injury) for that money though. Not a chance.

Funny thing is though .yesterday like ( most days ) our defence deal quite well with channel balls and manage to turn defence into attack by reading them and stepping out with the ball but the manager changes things round their defender hoofs one towards the corner flag and the striker pearollers one in

Blades 1-2 Bristol City - Dominated and should've been at least 2-0 up at half time. Sucker punched, 1-0 down at half time. Fleck gets sent off, Wilder still goes for the win, we concede a last minute winner - resulting from a fluked cross. And against a play off rival.

Blades 0-1 Villa
- We were the better team and if anyone deserved to win it was us. But their keeper makes a number of good saves, and in the last minute Stevens decides to show the best left foot in the Championship inside from the right to shoot.

Ipswich 0-0 Blades
- Controlled the game from start to finish against very poor opponents with nothing to play for and didn't even manage to get a goal. Lundstram deciding not to score sticks in the mind.

Brentford 1-1 Blades
- Very good away performance unrewarded thanks to numerous missed chances and Brentford scoring a scruffy goal after having nothing all game. 3 points thrown away, again against play off rivals.

Blades 1-1 Cardiff
- Best home performance for a long time. Dominated against a top team and there should have only been one winner but instead we concede another very avoidable late goal at the Bramall Lane end.

Blades 1-1 Millwall
- Crucial game against direct competition for 6th place. They're happy with a draw, and we're the better team. We finally grind them down only to surpass ourselves and throw it away immediately, straight from kick off.

At least another 10 points for us there including crucial ones gained over play off rivals.

And I know there are more. We genuinely should've been comfortably within the top 6. It's not like we've even got more than we deserved in any more than 1 or 2 games.

The games you have listed - plus a couple more were not wins because we didnt have that extra bit of quality to see us over the line.

Bar the odd game (Hull away) we have played really well this season. Not being able to convert that domination into points stems from not having a few more top end Championship-level performers that most of the clubs in the top six have.

i think most of us knew it was over right there. i tried to remain optimistic but in my heart of hearts .. i'm amazed we are where we are. Coutts already knows before he has the ball what he is going to do next it's already in his head. he is a 'top' player, a Rolls Royce (c) Pinchy.. to replace him would have cost 5 million at least.

i've noticed recently that a lot of teams struggle with long ball these days it is as though everyone has forgotten how to defend it.

But don't you think we could have got someone in who could have made the 4-point difference to get us into the play-offs? Or maybe tried a tactical change, e.g. a back four in certain games. We're talking fine margins here.

Very possibly, l was just referring to Coutts though. A tactical change for me, Coutts or no Coutts, would be to get the ball into the box earlier. Before the opposition managed to get eight or nine men back behind the ball.

so you mean that instead of trying to replace Coutts and keep the same system, we should have simply changed the system. there's mileage in that but it's hindsight

No. Simply get the ball in earlier. Without Coutts, it takes even more time.

When Coutts got Injured the defence were less comfortable playing out of defence
Fleck lost about 25% of his effectiveness
And the strikers were not getting the same service from midfield and were feeding off fighing balls better suited to .illwalls front two than ours

We lost a lot when we lost Coutts he was the one player we couldn't afford to lose but we did

Someone correct me but we seem to have a different midfield out every week.

Lundstram, Evans and Fleck seems a pretty settled 3 for the last few games since Duffy was injured, although I’d certainly be tempted to revert to Duffy behind Brooks/Leon for Brum away and leave Evans and Fleck together. No reflection on Lundstram, who I really rate, but there’s nothing to lose now by going all out to win the last three

no.. don't care if you are . you're a Wednesdayite :D
criticism of Wilder couldn't come from anywhere else..

Oh dear, this is news to me. What will I do? Is there a cure for this Wednesday-itis you talk about? Can I function on other days of the week or just the one beginning with a "W"? Will I get spots or warts on my skin?

Hoping the players learn from it and are better for it next season.

Add the points we've thrown away without Coutts to the points we would've have had with him in the team - automatic promotion?! It's not an outrageous thought.

While we would have generally been okay with this position preseason, the huge disappointment is down to the fact that we can all - well nearly all - see that the failures are pretty much clear to see and haven't been rectified. Yes more money would have helped but our inability to finish games off has cost us. It's not as if we have to look at umpteen games thinking of additional points to get us in the play off places. Just two or three does it.

But doesn't this all point to probably a more successful season next year? Having Coutts back with probably a new striker or two with Clarke coming off the bench. The present players (those that will remain at the club) with now have had valuable experience playing in the Championship and will have gained so much more confidence knowing they can beat most teams they face. Our management team would have also learnt a great deal and will have also realised the very few mistakes they have made. I for one am very confident that next year will see us have greater success and I can't wait for it to come. I would not have said that after the Adkins era.
The success we have had this season has given me my old mojo back in terms of looking forward to each game we approach. I just wish my dad, a lifelong blade, was still around to share it with me.
