In the context of where we are now it does raise some interesting questions.

I confess I don't know the exact figure of what we bid, perhaps we did a typical SUFC thing of offering a Mars Bar and half a Curly Wurly and get rejected saying 'well at least we tried', but I'd imagine that's what his market value would be at least so would have hoped we matched that.

If we were able to bid something in the region on £5 million then, why weren't we able to spend a similar amount in January? I don't think we've spent anywhere near that amount since August 10th. I'm certainly not one for wanting us to spend money for the sake of it, but curious that if we did have that money then why we don't appear to have that sort of money now.

We've no idea what was bid....

Plus we knew it wasn't going to be expected anyhow. I could ring Neymars dad and offer him 250k a week, he won't accept it and I don't have it anyway.

I think it was a Mars Bar or a Half Curly Wurly ... not both

Just because money is there doesn’t mean you spend it.

Are you saying we should have offered 2 mil for Evans, 2 mil for Leonard and 1 mil for Ricky Holmes?

The manager identified his targets and we brought most of them in without selling any of our best players.
At the time it was one of our best JTW’s ever.

Do you speak Portuguese ?

Re CC, l thought it was £4m bid as of comments on here yesterday? The higher the figure the louder the calls to know "weers that munneh gon"

Yes, but that hindsight business......

I think it was fake news.

What makes you think we have a Mars Bar and a Curly Wurly to offer? A Freddo is about as far as we will go.

I agree it was a relatively good JTW (which isn't saying much) however Wilder has bemoaned the lack of quality we have (after Hull and Fulham), and £5 mill on one player is the sort of figure that could bridge that gap

Not a chance on this earth did we offer £5 million for a player, or anywhere near. End of conversation.

Sadly I'm inclined to agree with you, though that does leave the question how much we offered Wolves for Coady? Wilder seemed to suggest it was a serious offer so maybe it was two Mars bars and a whole Curly Wurly

Although I can’t imagine it being a realistic bid, maybe they knew it would be rejected.

It’s like us making a world record bid of 250 million for Lionel Messi.
It’s never going to be accepted so a waste of time bidding.

Although I thought it was Wolves that made the bid public, not us, so maybe it was serious.
It’s certainly a mystery. Maybe SUFC just like the idea of having players who are scousers.

At the time CW said "Yes, we have put a bid in. What it is will remain between the two clubs. Yes, it's ambitious. But we like to think we are an ambitious club."

I think that Danny04 was suggesting that it was sub £4m.

Carlos Carvalhal? We know how that ended. :D

Like the £4m we paid for James Beattie eleven years ago? Like the £3m we paid for Ched nine years ago?

Threads like this make me personally glad we're nowhere near getting into the PL. Imagine the scenario, first season back. In a relegation battle from Day One. Come the JTW 'Is this it?' 'Is this the limit of our ambition?' 'C'mon, McCabe, you tightwad. Why can't we compete with the billionaires who own Bournemouth, Stoke or Watford?' 'Why can't we spend as much as taxpayer-funded West Ham?'

No thanks.

and that is depressing to read.

Wilder spent his budget or most of it anyway ,paper talk £5million! No way !

You do realise that Freddo's cost THIRTY PENCE now?

I reckon we should fuck Princey and McCabe off....10 Freddo's should more than cover it and leave some change for Wilder pre-season!

Our bid was £2.4m wasn't it?

Still not convinced it wasn't just another 'Johnny Russell'.

That's the figure everyone on here was quoting at the time. Where the OP has got £5m from I've no idea, stirring things up as usual.

Considering Wolves bought Coady for £2 million I'm guessing the £5 million figure came about from a disbelief that we could then go on to buy him for, erm...£2 million from Wolves.

Wasn't £1.5-2 million the price Liverpool wanted for him when we wouldn't stump up?

Liverpool sold him to Huddersfield for about £500,000 but he wouldn't have signed for us anyway as he didn't want to drop down to League 1, that's what he told my mate at least.

Interesting post LJB, and one which I don't doubt the validity of one iota. However, it might be an example of relativity of 'truth' as regards footballers & football, and perhaps people saying different things to different people at different times. When CC was with us, someone who I know and trust got to know CC's father due to his attendance at games. He also got to know CC a bit, but certainly not as much. It was told to my mate on a number of occasions that CC was desperate to move to us, he liked everything about the place, saw us a big club punching below their weight ;) , definitely going places and knew he'd improve as a player with us. He also said that we weren't exactly busting a gut to sign him and he'd be sad when the loan finished. They might have been telling my mate exactly what he wanted to hear.
