Stats on our central Midfielders

Conclusion is that we have 4 very good central midfielders. When have we been able to say that over the last decade?

Also the wrong box is highlighted on the xA stat.
That's another Green for Fleck then.
What do we reckon "ball recovery" is?

This.

And dissecting it yet further, Coutts and Fleck put together, is something very very special.

UTB

Where's passes per 90 minutes? That's a pretty important stat for a central midfielder.

I haven't found a conclusion myself just yet but I'm finding it very interesting Trying to come to one.

That Coutts & Fleck should be our 1st choice pairing and that Lundstram isn't as bad as is thought?

Coutts and fleck have more greens = best partnership

Do I win a prize?

You can interpret the stats in many ways - what's the saying about lies, damn lies and statistics?

However, the thing that jumps out at me there is the number of assists and goals coming from those four players. Over the season, our team has generally - give or take the odd Leonard appearance - had two of those four in. In, say, a total of 75-80 total appearances, they had contributed a total of 8 assists and 5 goals. The expected assists suggests that the assists should have been much higher - and the blame there could go on the strikers for not finishing the chances off - but the expected goals suggests our midfielders are (a) not getting in position to score nowhere near enough and (b) not scoring enough when they do.

I love Fleck and Coutts, Evans looks tidy and I see big potential in Lundstram but they need to contribute more goals and assists if we are to challenge at the top next season - or even make a late run into the Play Offs this season. I guess if they scored goals as well though, they would be Premier League players rather than with us. UTB.

I thought it was like when a player wins back possession (through a tackle, interception, or whatever) then makes a successful pass forward for his team. Basically starting the transition from defence into attack.

Probably wrong though.

Other stats I'd like to see:
  • % bricks headed to the right vs left, Jack O'Connell.
  • Jake Wright's win %.
  • How little Judas McCabe will be willing to flog Brooks for.
  • % number of posts with player's surnames spelt incorrectly; Sharpe, Tongue, McGuire, Brookes.
  • Billy's BMI.
  • Total number of pigs bouncing pre-Duffy versus post-Duffy.
  • Average % of 'pinch yourself with pride' moments experienced by Blades fans this season, as our Chris takes us back up to the Championship on a shoestring and gives the big spending, egotistical arseholes in the division a good seeing to.

Totally agree.
All our midfielders are generally impressive, they’re one of the best units I’ve seen us have in decades.

HOWEVER there is a big weakness.
We hardly get any goals from midfield, they seem scared to shoot.
There’s only Lunny who tries a shot but he’s can’t keep them on target.

Apparently Leonard and Holmes were brought in for the 'screamers.
Lunny can strike the ball really nicely, but he really needs some shooting practise.
He gets in the right positions and still isn't scared to have a pop but if he spent a few weeks with a striker(billy? Ched even?)just drilling his finishing itd be a start.

Why is it? Without context it seems pretty useless, if Billy bags from Fleck's first pass on Saturday and then Barnsley's centre mids kept doing five yard passes to each other on the edge of their own box for the rest of the game, they'd be getting a much higher passes/90 than Fleck's one. It's like looking at shots on goal, blasting ten shots into the Kop from 30 yards is not better than finishing one shot in the six yard box

Agree, noticed many of Lunny shots are powerful but seem to just go over the bar.
He need to get his body over the ball more, so to keep it down.
He’s not scared to shoot though, which is good.

I would love to see how Duffy's stats look alongside these, because I've always thought he's very good defensively being in the right positions and making interceptions by being clever.
Duffy wears the bounce slayers crown , no further personal assessment stats required .

Duffy 2 goals 9 assists, cat amongst pigeons as this alone skews all the ratings.

Worth reading the full thread (and giving him a follow) – his analysis has been a great addition to Beans ’s podcast.

Interesting stats.
I wonder how they would compare with the likes of Brown in 02-03, Jagielka in 05-06, Gannon in 89-90, Currie in 70-71.
Brown top for goals and xG, Jagielka best on tackles and ball recoveries, Gannon most assists and xA, Currie ranked highest in all passing categories?
