My mates a Charlton long standing supporter and he cannot understand why Ricky Holmes is not starting. He watched the game last night and he said when Brooks went off he should of brought on Ricky Holmes and we would have increased the lead. Dead ball expert and will run at defences with high energy levels and play as a striker or in between the striker and midfield.. He said he has been the best player every time he took to the field for Charlton. What do you think?

Potentially a man in a 10 year olds body. TBC watch this space.

Does seem strange that we’ve used him so little.

Considering we've spent the best part of a year chasing Leonard and longer chasing Ricky Holmes, it's bizarre how they've worked out.

Holmes has had a single start and he was arguably our best player, hasn't played a minute since....this in a spell where his competition hasn't played the majority of games either.

Leonard has just been way off it, however he's still young and you need to appreciate that sometimes it's difficult adapting when you've been at one team virtually all of your career.

Agreed, bringing Donaldson on wasn't going to achieve anything, it effectively left us a man short. Wilder has made some weird subs this season and this was one of them. As for Holmes, the exasperation just increases in me as every match goes by, what a fucking waste of talent (and money).

Clarke went to play in behind Donno, that's I'm thinking Holmes never came on due to that particular change in shape.

I said the same on 65m when it was obvious Brooks was knackered. Holmes was the obvious choice.

Putting Donaldson on instead of Holmes is like waiting 18 months to get a nice new pair of trainers and then when you finally get them, you go to the pub in your wellies.

Not everyone can play, Duffy has missed out many games due to Wilder going for a more solid 5-3-2 with an extra CM.

We were saying that Brooks looked tired in the middle of the 2nd half

And we expected him to go off and Holmes to come on in the same floating attack role.

Think Brooks and Holmes are the more similiar, so would have been a like for like swap.

It is easy after the event , but Holmes and his mazy runs would have had them Bamboozled , however we dont see what happens during training , but what i have seen of him he is exciting and can lift a crowd .

We would have kept the same shape and with Holmes might have found another goal given that quality in front of the sticks was the obvious deficiency last night.

But late in a game you don’t necessarily want a like for like swap. A bit of pace to turn their defenders is perfectly sensible.

Folk calling it out as a weird substitution are just plain wrong.

Very puzzling. Must be something we don't know.

Fleck, Coutts, Freeman and Lundstram are just a few of the players who have taken a little bit of time to gel into our team; we're much more high-energy and attacking the vast majority of the teams in this league so it takes some getting used to. Both Holmes and Leonard will come good for us - might be next season where we really see them come to the fore, but I've no doubt it will happen.

It does seem a strange one, Holmes obviously hasn't been signed as one for the future therefore you do start to wonder if he can't get off the bench ahead of Donaldson, then his future at the club is in doubt.

He'll be with us until January at least I would have thought, but if he doesn't start getting some game time early next season then that might be that.

League one to Championship is a big step up, these two have not made it nor has Caruthers.

Perhaps we should be more surprised and complementary as to how many of the squad from last season have made it at this level this season.
Bit unfair on Holmes, not had much chance to impress?? When he has come on as sub I liked his energy but he has made errors probably being too keen to impress.

Holmes wouldn't have offered any height against Warnock's giants, as the game wore on the long throws into the box and the punts in at every freekick over the half way line made more sense for Donaldson to come on, at 6 foot he was probably chosen for the physical presence he offered.

Though he missed a couple of great opportunities, i thought Donaldson did well when he came on.

The substitution was always going to be made.....so do you a) stick Holmes on and say run at them or b) put Donaldson on and ask him to hold it up...................CW went for b) and it nearly worked with Don hitting the post as well.......would a) have worked better.....who knows?

Agree with this. Looking at it in the moment. I thought it was a good change as Cardiff needed to push forward looking for the goal. Clayton has a bit of pace and and power and the ability to stretch a defence in the space behind (with them looking to push forward for the equaliser). It nearly worked and he hit the post. On another night that goes in and everyone is praising Wilder for a fantastic tactical sub.

Holmes will get used I have no doubt about that. Yes he might have come on last night and scored the winner but Wilder obviously wanted Donaldson's athleticism and but for a great save from there keeper, it almost worked. i reckon next season we'll see more of Holmes, but right now Brooks is clearly the man who needs to play. We might see Holmes and Brooks this season in the same team if we really need to go for it against a team that will sit back. Cardiff were ever going to play like that.

Donaldson did exactly what we needed - be more of a target man to Brooks and stronger on the ball. He won a couple of fouls which wound down the clock (which ultimately didn't help us in the end).

I completely don't get the Ricky situation - he looked great against Wolves, our best player and not had a sniff since. Even when he came on against Forest he had a couple of stray passes but he looked energetic and lively. I think he seriously needs a run in the team - especially when Duffy is not fit.
