English football wants to die. Trying to salvage it is a huge uphill battle.
Can’t drink, can’t swear, no atmosphere, grounds with an average age older than my local bowls club. It’s going south.
Depends what you mean by decent. Whenever they are on tv the monotonous chants from their so called ultras is annoying. Fortunately the opposition often score which shuts them up for a bit. What amazes me is that grounds like Palace now have a decent atmosphere. PALACE?! And people have given up at The Lane?!![]()

That Palace singing section is orchestrated Americanised Cheer led garbage, often has no correlation to the action on the field.
Why does it have to have correlation to the action on the field?
No, I don’t. Just as I don’t agree with the ‘if you think the Lane atmosphere is shit, you must move your seat to BLUT, leave your mates/family/kids or whoever you go with to sit with a bunch of 20 blokes you’ve never met and sing with them, or you’re not entitled to an opinion’ school of thought. Is that any less bizarre?
Plenty of interesting comments. I agree that louder support would be a good thing, but there are no simple solutions, and the one thing that is clear is that you cannot artificially create atmosphere, you can only create the conditions for it to be possible to have a noisy atmosphere. I felt the loud music before the home derby match actually took away the atmosphere - the 2 sets of supporters would have generated a much better atmosphere at the beginning if they had been able to feed off each other.
Some thoughts (several echoing what others have said):
1. Those who want to make a noise need to be able to be together. Either safe standing or unnumbered seating on part of the Kop would be practical measures that would help generate noise. It would also need good behaviour for it to last.
2. The connection between players and crowd has been watered down, everywhere. The population is more mobile, the players move on - is our longest-serving player now Brooks? People who move to the city go and watch United, but most do not have the deep emotional attachment. The same is true of the players -the idea of a player staying 10 years is unheard of (almost).
3. There is a greater sense of entitlement. There is hardly a set of fans in the country happy with their lot now. The cup competitions have lost ground, so if you do not win the Premier League or gain promotion, a season is a failure.
4. People have got used to half watching football on TV. They look up when there is a corner or a shot, but are generally not very interested in the rest of the game. And it may bring success if you pass the ball around on the half-way line, but it won't get a crowd excited.
5. Football crowds are no longer just working-class men in flat caps. Men behave differently in front of women, kids behave differently sitting next to their parents, and their parents and grandparents behave differently. Things have changed, largely for the better.
I don't think Bramall Lane is worse than other grounds in this respect.
Yes, it's absolutely far less bizarre than your nonsensical analogy.
I am sceptical about these "safe standing" schemes. From what I've seen, they look over sanitised and ultra "safe", I suspect they won't make much difference to things like atmosphere. There's a report on the BBC sport website that the 3 Norwich MPs are supporting a campaign to have safe standing introduced at Carrow Road. Worth Ricky and others having a look with a view to pushing for something similar at the Lane? A grassroots + clubs + public figures campaign would have a chance of success, but would require a long-term effort.

you could have heard a pin drop.

You might have but I didn't, I've been looking for it all week.
Could you pop it in an envelope and post it to me please.

Bollocks.
I was cold, didn’t freeze my voice box.
We only have to look at the shoutbox to know that this is 100% fact, infact at one point I thought they’d change the name to shitbox and it had nothing to do with what was spoken in the shoutbox.A lot of people think they can influence the match by wearing a different pair of socks or going for a shit at the right time.
Is it a fact that they wear specific clothes, or that they influence the match? We should be told.We only have to look at the shoutbox to know that this is 100% fact, infact at one point I thought they’d change the name to shitbox and it had nothing to do with what was spoken in the shoutbox.![]()

What a load of wank.
You don’t have to spend the game chanting in order to support the team. Paying your hard earned to come and watch the Blades is what being a supporter is all about, not how much noise you choose to make whilst you are there. Some people like to sit and enjoy the game without making a peep and who can judge them for this? Some people chose to spend the game chanting away regardless of what is happening on the pitch - who are you to judge them?
The fact that we were so toothless today had fuck all to do with how much noise came from the stands.
So now it's the club's fault as well as the fans that people aren't behaving how you want them to.People at the club know about the BLUT plan so we'll see if they're bothered about improving our support when ST details are released. They should be opening at least one block up there but being an English football club with an English fanbase, I'm not expecting anything. We'll carry on as we are thank you very much. It's only attendances that matter. And those bothered about our poor support will continue to do fuck all about it.
