Morning all - well, it's the international break, one of the worst possible times to be a football fan. To fill the aching void, here is a new podcast looking at many things Sheffield United, joined again by football analyst and fellow Blade, Jay Socik.

Featuring:
  • A look at the Forest game (02:10)
  • The likelihood of signing Jamal Blackman (05:15)
  • A preview of Brentford and Cardiff (12:56)
  • Playoff odds (16:55)
  • What United are "missing" - what kind of player would make the biggest difference to our team (27:05)
  • Some advanced stats on how the playoff race is shaking out (39:27)

I think my favourite part of this is our discussion about "difference makers", at 27:05 - essentially trying to answer the question of "if you could add one thing / type of player to our team right now, what would it be?" Definitely recommend giving that part a listen if you can only spare a few mins, and would love to hear what others think ;)

Cheers as always for all your listens, subscribes and feedback - UTB!

Is there a problem with the sound on this one?
It sounds speeded up to me with Jay’s voice sounding a bit garbled.
It might be just me or my phone but I’ve not had that problem before.

Had a bit of scratchy mic sound at Jay’s end in the first few mins, but otherwise I think the sound is normal... you’ve not accidentally changed the playback speed by any chance, have you? I’ve done that before and wondered what the hell was going on :) suddenly sounded like Alvin and the Chipmunks.

I have to admit I always mean to listen to this but usually see it when I'm at work then forget. Think I'll start bookmarking the threads

Yeah, sorry about that.

We'll try to be quieter at the Cardiff match.

Were you the older gentleman stood in front of me on the Kop?
Every-time we got in their half;
"Fucking shoot!!"

When we eventually did take a shot & didn't score;
"Why's he shooting from there! Fucking rubbish!"

It was like having Guardiola talking you through the finer points of the game :D

Sounded fine to me and happy to bump this one again.

Come on fellow Blades and give it a listen!

BTW - no relation.....

:D Thanks a lot! To be fair, the podcast doesn't make any mention of the merits of black players, re-hashing the Ched Evans case, or Diego De Girolamo's latest career move. Must do better for the next one :)

Yes, just so called facts and stats!

Pah. it will never catch on. Coming on here, using your clever stats and taking all our jobs.....

Great little podcast, keep up the good work!

My nephew wants to be a football statitistician, so I might see if I can get him to listen. Maybe you could PM me the contact details of your guest so I can get in touch with him about it?

Mid 50s but no hair so I suppose I do look 'old' in a hunky Bruce Willis / Jason Statham kind of way.

....ish

Sounds like me.

No, that's definitely not me then.

Really appreciate this as an exile. Will definitely be listening to your future podcasts!

Subscribed via the Podcast Addict app. I'm off down to London tomorrow so I'll give it a listen on the train.

You need to start a "Does anyone know a bar in London where I can see the game*?" thread.

* During an international break with only crap Ingerland and no Blades game, you are allowed to ask for a bar showing donkey porn.

First time listener and it was very good. Especially if you like the statistical side of things, not just for SUFC but other teams as well.

It accords with my view that we’ll probably fall short primarily because the other sides have stronger form on the attacking side at the moment.

However, football being the great game it is, we don’t know what will happen. If we can create better quality chances and put them away plus get a little slice of luck you never know.

Cheers - and yes, absolutely. Our strikers have been relatively good at finishing chances this season but the fact remains that we just don't create anywhere near as many good chances as the teams clustered around the 5th / 6th position (to say nothing of the top 3-4). Regardless of what happens for the rest of the year, I think this is something we'll clearly need to improve next season as it's going to be hard to rely on Sharp and Clarke repeating their high scoring rate for another year.

You were right. I’d increased the playback speed to 1.5 times which I didn’t even know was possible.

User error!

I had no idea that Bolassie played for Barnet.

Great listen. I'll keep a look out for the next episodes!

Yeah, he was on loan from Plymouth I think it was. He was unsurprisingly very good. Jason Puncheon was another Barnet player, throw in Albert Adomah and Ricky Holmes and there were some very decent attackers playing there for a couple of seasons, considering they were perennial relegation battlers in league two!

Scunthorpe’s Neal Bishop was their captain for a while, of whom the fans would sing “you’ll never bash the Bishop” :)

Thanks for listening to the pod!
