Players who went on to forge better careers than expected

John Francis (became a cult hero at Burnley), always wished he'd stayed on with us, fastest player ever just not the most skilful...

I always thought Cahill was a class above whilst on loan with us...and he brought out the best in Kilgallon, who had looked decidedly average before this period

We've had some great central defenders, McGrath being amongst the very best, but as a pairing, Cahill and Kilgallon were excellent, and at the time I think Cahill could have been bought for £5 mil, so off to Bolton he went......we really do exist by the eagle-eyed optimism of scouts and managers, and as for wanting more than lower league football......apologies for just avoiding a rant, but sometimes this club, my club, embraces disappointment with loving arms. We currently have a good manager, someone I hope remains, but our underachieving 'ambition' will probably contribute to a parting of the ways.

We've had plenty of dubiously skilled motor bikes:
Littlejohn, Forte (x2), Poleon, O'Halloran-wanker
I've mentioned this before on here but Littlejohn managed a very good season for us in the top flight including a very skilful back heeled goal against the pigs and a brilliant winner against Liverpool. He wasn't a world beater but there was much more to his game than just pace.

Matt Lowton as done really well especially at Burnley. Didn't think he would make the jump so well.

Definitely agree with Bartley although, I'd go as far as to say that Swansea are generally shite and its not so much him making the step up, as opposed to everyone else in the squad being just as, if not more shit than he is.

Surprised Calvert-Lewin hasn't had a mention as yet.

After seeing him play and do next to nothing in his few games for us, I was convinced he'd be another Jordan Slew. Just shows you.

Olivier Tebily, didn't he go on to play quite a bit for Celtic?
Remember John MacPhail becoming a sort of cult hero at Sunderland.
Beagrie had a decent career with Stoke, Everton and Man City.
Of course there's a few who got shipped out during the Haslam years to then go on and have good careers elsewhere, Varadi and Stainrod being two examples.

Although he doesn't play much anymore, Nathan Dyer had a few good years in the premiership at Swansea.
He was also part of Leicesters premier league winning team

Martyn Woolford and Connor Sammon. How the fuck have they earned a living out of football?????

Lowton was pretty much finished with us when he went overseas. Came back & it was the making of him.

I think the biggest shout maybe Maguire. People claming we got a good deal when he went to Hull City?

If he has a good world cup what are the odds on him earning a move to one of the top 5 teams?>

What about Billy? Shown the door and bounced back not once but twice!

I think he’ll get a move to a top 5 team - he’s had an excellent season and won many plaudits amongst commentators, journalists and fans...he still looks like the big kid in the playground as well, so certainly catches the eye.

I think you’re taking it a bit far with the having a good World Cup though:
- he won’t start because he’s not currently playing for one of the “top” teams.
- he’s playing for England - who was the last English player to have a good tournament?

In a dimension where the likes of Joey Essex can be a star, nothing much surprises me any more.

Apparently Spurs were in for him but he chose Leicester instead as it was closer to home, so just goes to show he's pretty much already earnt it
