So I went to the QPR match last Tuesday night and took my 7 yr old and Bro-in-law who was attending his first game ever. Good news on that front we have another brother to add to the flock.

The main thing I took from the game apart from Jam's unbelievable save from the offside header right under the BLUT where we were sitting was how frigging loud the PA system is. I know it's been like this for ages but it does my head in. It kills any atmosphere pre-match from the fans.

I was trying to chat to the Brother-in-law before the game and educate him on the world class facilities and team we're assembling and couldn't hear a word he was saying. So I'm interested is it just me?

It’s used to crush any attempts to get an atmosphere going before kick off with shite music drowning out singing - Like at the pigs game.

It’s other purpose is to orchestrate a formulaic rendition of GCB at kick off. I’m incapable of singing it until John Denver is faded out, although strangely I seem to manage ok at away games.

And yes it’s too fucking loud!

I love it. I'm proud of how loud it is.

Many proxy grounds like Hillsborough sound "tinny".

It’s way too loud, you can’t even hear yourself think but it’s not in my top 1000 things wrong this week. :)

My wife didn’t put enough gravy on my Sunday dinner, now that was annoying.:)

Mrs Wizadry poured your gravy for you? Very council. Why would you give both the butler AND the under butler Sunday off?

Nothing wrong with the PA system it's the shit that Gary Sinclair plays that is the problem and I hate the prompting of the GCB each half ..................... as bad as the Tom Hark rubbish that it took years to get rid of.

They’re both massaging a foot each as we type, I think it’s my foot, they don’t get away with it that easily. :D

If the GCB wasn't prompted it wouldn't be 1) as loud and 2) as co-ordinated.
But it would be genuine, fan led, honest and a marvel of the footballing world. Like it used to be. Now it's just some prompted gimmick that "all the family can join in with".
And yes, the PA is too loud, has been for years. The club seems to think it should be like a nightclub, but it should be background music as the crowd gathers. Oddly, it was better when the PA was crapper.

I don't even like the song that much. We have better.

But it's not as bad as playing Tom Hark after every goal, that was fucking embarrasing, especially when we played shit and our goal was a consolation. The crowd was simply drowned out by "Der Der Der". How long did we play that shit for, six or seven seasons?

You really have to learn to accept that it's the fault of younger fans these days. It was never prompted in the past and rang out like everyone meant it, rather than being like reciting The Lords Prayer in assembly. Now either accept that times have changed or that there's not the same passion as when the Kop went all seater even. ( That's in general obviously, but that's what it seems like to me.

We didn't need it years ago to ramp the volume up we don't need it now, what next an ice hockey style organ player on the BLUT singing row. Always seems to be enough noise from our fans at away games, funny that ;)

Sadly generally on concourses more than in the stand.

But is it the younger fans, or is it a direction the club has taken, thinking this is what the younger fans want? Is it one of those "just because you can, doesn't mean you should" things, or is it because Sinclair has been given too much say in how the PA is used?
I don't know, but I think in this case it isn't just "old blokes' nostalgia" that says it was better in t'old days.

Fans are together in a smaller area at away games, and it'll still often be disjointed.

I've long acknowledged that about the younger fans, I don't know why you'd think otherwise. They are impressive on the concourse though, they must get some great YouTweet videos.

They've got a chance to do something about our home support with the BLUT but I think most of them are just too fucking cool for it.

I know, should have said not specifically you.

Cool? :) I've got more time for those who are trying to improve the atmosphere than some twat who thinks he's coked up when he's had his leg lifted with a wrap of baking powder and thinks intimidating counter staff mob handedly is funny.

Never see them at the likes of Millwall, Leeds etc.

No it's not just you mate.
It is ridiculously, unbearably, stupidly loud. I cannot for the life of me think who/why anyone would decide that the volume level is right as it is.
I'd go as far as to say, you would need to offer ear protection in the workplace if it was industrial noise.
Absolutely barking.

I just hate the Americanisation of football today, we have the stupid clapper things at Leicester and foam hands everywhere. Palace try to be like some Italian clubs ultra's, we have some stupid knobs waving flags behind the goal when Arsenal score and prompted singing and celebrations everywhere, it's all bollocks, might just be me getting old mind.

I'm getting old with you then mate!

If we don't need prompting for the GCB away from home then we don't need prompting at home either.
The GCB should start at the toss of the coin. I'll start it off this weekend. That will fuck it up when they are too late with the piped in rendition :p

To continue with the Victor Meldrew post match moans, the PA system is far too loud (after it was far too quiet against Birmingham). Part of the point if going to a football match is to talk to those around you, which is difficult when the PA system is so loud. Maybe the club think that if we can't speak to each other they will silence any criticism!?

Conversation between me and the old boy next to me, yesterday, c.2:50pm.

ME: Can you remember when we used to be able to talk to each other before kick off?

OLD BOY: Eh?

ME: CAN YOU REMEMBER WHEN WE USED TO BE ABLE TO TALK TO EACH OTHER BEFORE KICK OFF??

OLD BOY: SORRY, I CAN‘T HEAR YOU!

I think that’s what he said, anyway. He was at least 6 inches away from my right ear at the time, so I couldn’t be sure.

Still, at least we could hear Gaz bellowing his usual inanities and playing his usual shite music. Which is what we come for, after all, and is always far better than actually sharing the day with folk around you.

It‘s number 93 on the list of things to be concerned about right now, but bloody hell it’s aggravating.
