Skysports.com understands Swindon Town have rejected a bid for leading scorer Simon Cox.

The 21-year-old has been in devastating form for the Robins this season and has scored 17 goals in all competitions.

He has been linked with Premier League duo Bolton and Fulham, while Sheffield United are also rumoured to be interested.

An offer from the Championship for Simon Cox has been turned down by the Robins.

Sheffield United have been linked with a move for the ex-Reading man and are in the market for a striker after selling James Beattie.

21-year-old Cox netted his 17th goal of the season in Saturday's defeat by Huddersfield.

Sheffield Utd and Bolton are to fight it out for the signature of highly rated Swindon forward Simon Cox 1.5 million could persuade the Robins to sell before the transfer deadline.

Hmmmmm...?

Sheffield United are rumoured to be interested in former Reading striker Simon Cox from Swindon Town should a deal to bring Leeds United forward Jermaine Beckford to Bramall Lane fail.
Cox, 22 has been sensational during the 2008/09; netting 32 goals and saving Swindon Town virtually single handily from relegation to Coca-Cola League Two.

During the season he netted three hat-tricks against; Hartlepool United (drew 3-3), Scunthorpe United (drew 3-3) and Northampton Town (won 4-3); all away from the County Ground.

It is believed that Leicester City are also interested in the former Royal, but have pulled out as the £1,500,000 asking fee is too much.

I'd rather have him that beckford, 2 years younger and scored more goals, can't be a bad signing, but he is another small striker (5'10'') and lets be honest, we need another big striker, not so we can hoof the ball upfield, so we can cross the ball and score headers...

I remember the last prolific scorer we got from League One. Billy Sharp. Didn't exactly set the world on fire did he?

Watching Billy Sharp & Ward I can see a similar comparison.
They both seem to be very unlucky in front of goal for us.
Hitting woodwork, having goal dissallowed for non offside offside and having keepers pull of wonder saves against them.
They both hit the target (including the woodwork) alot but just as I say have had terrible luck.
It's the Blades way though :D

I agree! Trouble is we don't play style to suit a prolific striker. We buy players with high strike rates and then they can't play our style. We just play hoof ball for the big lanky target men and not for the skillful forwards. It's been the same most of the way hulse, stead, hendo, Beattie etc
so I think it would be a bad move for cox unless we book up our ideas and play FOOTball!

A lot of them were from dead-ball situations, though. That's not to say they're nto a good achievement, but we need to be able to score from open play too - if the dead-ball opportunities dry up, so do the goals.

I agree 100% we have no creativity. That doesn't mean i expect us to play like arsenal but it wouldn't hurt to mix things up a bit, instead of playing long ball to a sunday league standard!

...backing up my long-hammered-home-point about not needing a 20-a-season striker. :)

I agree to a certain extent but it cannot be guaranteed that every player will step up again and score the goals.

:) That's kinda my point though. You don't need EVERYBODY to step up. There's no pressure on anyone. Relying on one player results in the situation we had with James Beattie. First name on the team sheet, the "other 10" players lumping it to him and when he's injured, we're fooked.

It just goes to show that like KL_Blade says, despite only playing for half a season he was still our top scorer. But where were we with Beattie? And where did we finish? Also, how many goals did he score the previous season? Remember if it wasn't for an unbelievable run of results towards the end of the season, we'd have finished mid-table but still with nearly the top scorer in the division.

In my book, 20-a-season strikers aren't worth what most people make out they are.

I agree with what you say but having that striker who is able to score those 20 goals whilst also not being the "Beattie Player" would be a huge bonus.

I fully agree with both thoughts but they only bring me back to Thelooneytuner's comments though:-

I haven't had many opportunities to watch our games and don't know much about Cox either but from the limited number of matches I've seen and the scouting reports I've read of him, until Blackie decides to change the style of play, I have absolutely no idea how Cox would suit us other than being similar to Ward and Sharp.

Overheard someone saying we were after him on loan. Not seen much of him since he went to West Brom but seemed to know where the net was when I've seen him. Thoughts?

Decent player, kind of in the Kevin Phillips mould. I would be happy for us to have him til the end of the season but I have one burning questions.....HOW MANY MORE LOANS ARE WE ALLOWED

Football is a joke now. You can borrow nearly a full team!

Wouldn't be a bad addition, but don't want him at all if its another loan, were wasting too much money on loans.
