Folk behind prodding you...

It's not always been the Family stand throughout, also, those who moved in when the stand was built have aged a little, if they've been renewing ever since... They won't have been 'removed'.

Most on our block have been there for a loong time. There aren't many kids left.
fair point, I was always on the Kop pre children so haven't seen that stand change over time first hand.

Barnsley away a few years back (Sharp 1-0) we took about 6000. Everybody to a man was stood. I was slap bang middle of the stand. Old woman behind me looked like Blanche from Corrie (RIP). She was tugging at my coat to a point I jerked back. Turned round and told her to fuck off. Her lads were stood each side of her (big lads n all). Gave me a stare then told her mother to stand up or shut up. I don’t get this sense of entitlement mi sen. And it’s why I prefer unreserved seating at away games.

First post here, been a lurker for a while but anyway. What do you do when you get folk prodding you from behind telling you to sit down? As an ex-season ticket holder I've only had this problem since buying the individual tickets on the south stand. Although for this season I've enjoyed mostly sitting on redbrik upper as the view is really great. I've had this happen to me twice this season and it has annoyed me so much. First time was at the derby and I sat on the south stand. A lot of people were stood up from the beginning including the ones in front of me as the atmosphere was electric. I was happy standing up. I get a prod from the back to sit down, so I respectfully do. People in front don't so I just get back up. I thought sod it. But this Saturday's cup match against Preson was the time it took the biscuit. Again, on the south stand. We get a penalty and obviously you bloody stand up to watch it. I again get a prod in the back saying they can't see. I sit down, now I can't bleeding see. Both times it has come from gentleman who are getting on in years, I'd say in their late 50's early 60's. I don't like to cause a fuss and try to be respectful but this time I just commented back and said "I can't fucking see now either". Have you guys come across this a lot or is it just a tendency of folk that sit on the south stand? With hindsight I said to the other half I wish I'd have sat down and waited til Sharpy took the spot and just stood up. What are you supposed to do?Join them in not seeing it or be a prick to the guy in front and tell him you can't see either? I'm probably blowing this way out of proportion but I try and be respectful to people but the next time this happens I'm going to have to just ignore it and stand up when I want.

Were you by any chance sat on roughly row DD, seats 135ish in Gangway F In the south stand during the derby game?

No he was stood up. :D

As a late 50's early 60's gentleman of an excitable and sweary disposition I feel sorry for everyone around me in the South Stand when I stand up and have a rant. If I stood up all the time though I'd expect a prod or even worse.

Basically, never go anywhere where you have to sit down.

Don't get your tickets where it's highly likely to be populated by BOBs (Boring Old Bastards - who obviously never stood up when they were younger). .
How about BOBs with dodgy knees that can't stand?

Maybe they should fuck off to Meadowhall as well?

I'd have to question how these BOBs managed to get to their seat in the first place?

I understand not wanting to be up and down all game and wanting to sit down, but not for things like penalties.

Should also say that it's not just the older ones who are passionate about sitting down, you get many BYBs too.

No, I was sat quite low down Gangway G Row E seat 168 (for the derby). For the Preston game on Saturday I was sat fairly central on SS in the middle.

By the way, I don't want people to think I'm being ageist here. I know some lads my age can be quite disrespectful to people around them. I'm quite an analytical fan, I don't tend to shout a lot but I will get involved in the chants and stuff. I often go on my own as a lot of my good friends are Wednesday fans so I don't want to come barging in a stand where it might be new for me to sit and cause a fuss because you don't want a bad atmosphere with the people around you. Funny thing is, is I'm going to sit in the same seat for an upcoming home game so we'll see if the guy is there again which I can almost count on. But I think when it's a penalty and the guy behind me wants me to sit down, in future I will offer a swap of seats or kindly tell them that I will be standing and that they should stand too. I totally get that the older folk sometimes can't stand as much as they used to but I agree, we should probably have areas for the fans who have bad knees maybe but how do you enforce that or even market it?

I am in outrage that sufc installed extra seats between gangways f/g in the south stand instead of the Stannah stairlift as i requested :(

I’ve only experienced this once (well a few time’s from the same person), it was when I had a season ticket on the south stand. I don’t want to offend anyone, but from my experience of sitting there, most of the crowd are old farts that don’t like loud chanting, standing or general fun

While I would love to stand all game you have to understand it’s an all SEATER stadium.

Some people (myself included) like to stand, sing & shout for 90 minutes.

But you have to respect that just because people want to sit & support they are no less a supporter than you or I.

Takes all sorts & it’s the same in every ground

This ^^

I get that people like to stand, but my knees are that fucked I can't really do that for long.

Not Blades related but a variation on the same theme with a slightly embarrassing ending.

In the early 90’s I’d gone to see Extreme at the City Hall and I was about five rows from the front. When the band came on, a youth two rows in front of me stood on his seat, blocking my view of Nuno Bettencourt. “Oi! Get dahn!” I yelled and he got down. A few minutes later, he was up again. “Fucking get dahn now!!!” I yelled getting more pissed off. He got down but got back up again after a bit. I’d had enough by now and surged forward through the crowd and planted a firm - but not too aggressive - fist in his back to get his attention. “Get dahn now before I fucking knock you dahn!!!” I snarled. This seemed to do the trick as he got down off his seat and stayed down for the rest of the gig.

Afterwards, while queuing at the bogs for a piss, I saw this lad in the queue near the front. I was shocked to note that he was in fact a gangly, lanky youth, about 6’3 – 6’4 tall. It didn’t take much to work out that he was probably just stood up normally and wasn’t standing on his seat at all and he must have spent the rest of the gig crouched over for fear of another jag in the kidneys from the bully behind.

Oooops!

"I've sat in this seat since this Stand opened Son. It's a seat. For sitting in. Sit darn or l'll call a steward"( who will arrive after the penalty has been taken)

He'll then tell everyone around you , loudly, what you did.

Good luck.

A guy behind me on the South once prodded me in my back and said I was moving about too much and my chair was banging his legs (the "moving about" was at chances, etc...at least I wasn't jumping up and down and being a pissed up gobby twat like the regulars in front of me).
As I was borrowing a mate's season ticket, I didn't make too much fuss. He obviously hadn't considered sitting with his legs at a different angle, like I have to.
Some people have sat in the same seat for years and feel they can talk to "visitors" however they like. One day, they will pick on some pissed up nutter who might not be as polite as most people on here.

Well I’m in the aforementioned ‘getting on’ age group and I’m up and down like a Scoppydiddle most games, I kick every ball. It beggars belief that some owd git would ask you to ‘SIT DAAAAARN!’ during a penalty take.

To be honest though, I’ve had more stick off loved up couples who refuse to get up and untangle themselves even for a goal, and families with young kids who seem to spend the whole game talking about anything but football, but get decidedly grumpy about somebody standing up to sing the GCB. It’s perfectly ok for their little darlings to kick the back of your seat for 90 feckin minutes though. GEERRRRCHA! ;)

Continuing the theme of annoying fellow supporters. I sit with my mate and his son in the Family stand in same seats we have had for some time now. We are at the opposite end of the gangway with just a couple of seats remaining past ours. These are held by a Grandfather, and son along with grandson (aged about 10) who sits on the row in front directly in front of them.
EVERY SINGLE MATCH they arrive from the bar at least 5 or more minutes after the match has begun. This means the whole of two rows have to stand up as they make their way to their seats. Then EVERY SINGLE MATCH, roughly on 20/25 mins of first half, the kid, busting from all the cola he has been drinking gets up to go to the bog. Again the whole of the row has to stand to let him out, thus blocking everyone's view (yes I know its momentary), and then having to stand up again on his return!
Then EVERY SINGLE MATCH , 5 mins before half time, either the father of grandfather gets up to go to the bar (they take it in turns) so they can get served without having to queue too long. Thus once again the whole row has to stand as they pass. And yes you ve guessed it, they dont come back to their seats until at least 5 mins into second half! And once again the whole two rows have to stand yet again.
If that is not enough, EVERY SINGLE MATCH, they leave 5 minutes before the end and so once again we are all up from our seats. Presumingly so they can get to the pub before there is a queue at the bar!
They miss up to 20 minutes of every game all season! Why bother FFS. just stay in the pub!!!!
I have to go home and lay down FFS , its too much exercise at my age!!!
Yes I know, Im a BOB

When I had my season ticket on the Kop, there was a group of sisters a few rows down from us that we used to refer to as the Pink Ladies. Every match they turned up at least ten or fifteen minutes late and always made sure they were up for half time early and back from half time late. Often, this routine involved other members of their families and collected entourage. They were rough, loud, usually well oiled and enjoyed "bantering" with people around them.

Eventually, a lady in their row who had put up with this for years decided to say something. She seemed the quiet, mousy type and politely suggested that that they could perhaps try and get to the match on time. The Pink Ladies went fucking mental at her and kept making comments for the rest of the match. After that, it only got worse, and they seemed to make a point of arriving late and being twattish to the lady in question.

In the end, the lady moved seats or stopped coming all together. I am not sure what the point of the above story is, other than people can be c*nts.

This ^^

I agree, but I was bloody sat down for like 98% of the match. The one time I get up is for the penalty before it's taken because everyone else is stood up.

There is an old guy behind me on the south stand who got upset when I jump up for a goal, generally 5 seconds before anyone else due to my sixth sense. Sit daaaaarn. I just hold off jumping up now as I don’t want to ruin it for him

How about this proposal:

John Street - kids and families
South Stand - BOBs and zombies
Kop and BLUT - active vocal supporters

If only it was that simple!

No argument from me mate, it's the same when we are attacking, people get up in anticipation. I just can't do that anymore and thats one of the reasons I don't go as much. My fucked knees are my fault but I just can't do all that up and down like i used to.

What a fucking thread.

Not a lot annoys me more than some pricks telling me how I can/should support my team.
If you don't like how others behave then fuck off and take up another activity, if not be prepared to put up with others who choose a different way.
Stand and sing, sit and applaud, turn up late, fuck off early. The choice is YOURS and anyone who tells you different is a cunt who should keep the fuck out of your affairs.
The amount of moaning about other supporters on this forum is, frankly, pathetic.

One thing to take into account. It's an all seater stadium because of the law of the land, and officially, the club is within it's rights to make you abide by that. The fact they choose not to is a something they can change at any time.

Do whatever the person in front is doing, fuck the ones behind
