Our problem....and it's quite a complimentary one is....

Teams sit back and are happy to take a point at the lane. They're happy to defend and aim for a goal on the counter attack.

Think is, these are professional players, having played football to a pretty decent standard, it doesn't matter how good you are, two organised banks of 4/5 is very very difficult to break down and create chances against no matter how good you are.

When the opposition set up like that we need to make more of our free kicks and shots from outside the box, an area that we are pretty poor at to be honest. We just seem to concentrate on overlapping the wing backs and getting crosses in. Other teams have sussed this and double up out wide, which creates more space in the centre, but we seem reluctant to shoot. Nathan Thomas showed how effective that can be v Ipswich.

I hope if we've signed Holmes, we will have a decent dead ball specialist and I recall Leonard has a good record of goals from outside the box. Fingers crossed :)

So we need a plan B to break this down, over to Chris.

because they know all we do is side to side football it's so easy to defend against

I've just been looking at the goals scored column. There's only Wolves who have scored significantly more goals than us. And yet in relation to the amount of possession we seem to have in the opponents half in most games we don't seem to score that many goals.

Last night we needed a touch of creativity. That little chip forward by Brooks to Duffy for the third at Hillsborough or that sublime pass by Duffy to Brooks for the winner at Leeds.

Towards the end last night we lost a little patience and snatched at 'having a go' from outside the box.

As much as we can 'blame' the opposition for parking the bus if we are to be successful then we have to take responsibility and come up with other options to unlock these defences.

We have the best management team in the division to do just that.

You're absolutely spot on, Scooter.

Looking at the remaining visitors to the Lane, we're going to be presented with this problem in almost all of the remaining fixtures.

Villa and possibly Leeds may have a bit of a go, but the rest - QPR, Burton, Forest (under the ultra-defensive Karanka), Cardiff, Middlesbrough (under ale-house Pulis), Millwall and Preston - are all archetypal Championship sides in the same mould as Bolton, Norwich, Birmingham and Wednesday; defensive, safety-first sides that are content to let the opposition have the majority of possession whilst hoping to hit on the break with a direct style of play.

'1889' is correct; in those circumstances we need to be prepared to let more shots go from distance rather than always trying to work the perfect goal and it would be great to have a threat from free-kicks and corners to add to our arsenal. Holmes could provide that ingredient.

Agreed, set pieces are everything in games where teams just come to defend

I agree with lot's on this thread and a stop on original post. Teams are going to park the bus against us as Pigs and others have done. This is absolutely the type of game where you need to make the most of your set pieces. A good free kick or header from a good corner is enough to win these type of games. We really need to improve on this aspect of our play.

If Holmes is coming (and I think he is lucky to still be in line, given he messed us about in the summer) at least he should make a difference to our set pieces.

been trying to get this across all morning scooter .. Lucky didn’t do anything special any proper pro knows how to play park the bus

It was 1 that irrated me alot is 43mins we get a free kick, In a great position the same area fleck scored in september but yet duffy took it

I hope we get Holmes in..he can get shots in from around the edge of the box, good at set pieces and can run past people and also play a killer ball...the only thing against him would be he could do with being a bit younger.
Leonard is a threat from range, and Brooks could make a difference running at defenders...I thought last night we didn't move the ball quick enough, and ended up playing in front of them to much.

Exactly what I thought. They were there for the taking.

Evans has a number of assists from dead ball situations at Wigan.

Bring back Hanson:).

We've signed a few 6 footers this month.

Clarke not Brooks

Agree with all above . also set pieces can be the fine margin in these games between getting 1 point or 3 . Def room for improvement in this area..

So we need a plan B to break this down, over to Chris.

You are correct we do need a plan B - and yes it's over to CW & AK.

It doesn't appear as though Billy figures heavily in the plan, he also needs no sentiment in jettisoning others if as he keeps saying "I intend driving this club forward"

I think the JTW has started to prove that.

UTB

The OP is correct.

Teams will come and sit back against us.

But to expect KM / CW / AK to be able to not only build a team capable of staying the division and nicking points as and when we can but to break last a team parking the bus with players worth in excess of £20milliom will take a few more transfer windows.

It’s topics like these that are correct but when people say we need a plan B is what can spiral into a witch hunt.

We are a newly promoted side it’s going to take time.

We overplayed too much last night. Clarke and Donaldson were having to shuffle back and forth to stay onside. The more crosses that go in, the more chances are likely to be created. We should also have tried to play through them a bit more as per Fleck`s run in the first half.

Good job we’ve signed a couple of talented midfielders then to help us unpick the lock.

We have the answer a player that frightens defences to DEATH , and with the other players we have signed WE WILL OVER COME , we just need that first bloody win Ohh yes I almost forgot the you will want to know the answer =

That’s all we do, is it? It’s been quite effective for a season and a half hasn’t it?

Are you hoping for a just a tiny little bit of hoof?

You already know he’s shouting “gerrin int box” and when a defender passes it “stop faffing around with it”

We were playing hoof ball in game yesterday in first half

For teams to come and park the bus just shows how far we have come in 18 months credit to the lads and manger and staff

I've read the thread about 'accepting a draw' last night and agree with it otherwise I think we would have seen Leonard on, still think Thomas could've done a job but Wilder doesn't seem to fancy him anymore. Personally I'd have him sat on the bench for a 10 or 15 minutes cameo at the end of games like that, 'the gamble' to win a couple of points. We seem to be getting out muscled by defenders lately and don't have a response to it.

We're the division's top goal-scorers from open play. We've got the division's leading striker (Clarke) and the division's leading creative midfielder (Duffy). So...it's not that east to defend against, is it?

We dominate possession so much and consistently have the ball in the attacking third so often that it feels like we should score even more than we do, though. I agree with the sentiment on that level. If only we could use the JTW to sign a couple more pacy midfielders, a new attacking option, and potentially another creative option who just so happens to be a set-piece specialist...
