That tackle

Chris Wilder has praised the tackle by Regan Slater ("Proper tackle - made in Sheffield"). He won the ball cleanly but also sent the opponent flying. The ref was happy with it.

However, the tackle by Fleck a few weeks ago, which got him sent off, did not appear to be very different. Maybe a split-second late in the timing, but otherwise a full-blooded tackle which won the ball.

Was Fleck hard done by? Would a different ref have penalised Slater?

It's a funny old game...

He did clearly get the ball, but I could see some refs giving a yellow (or poss a red?) for it, as he's not in control. Winning the ball first these days isn't enough justification to allow anything to go.

Still doesn't change that Fleck's was a red all day long.

Slater's feet never left the ground, both of Fleck's did.

Hence Fleck was judged to be "out of control" and Slater wasn't.

Hats off to the Ipswich player as well, just got up and on with the game. Contrast with that Chesterfield player a few years back who went into convulsions like a hooked mackerel. Fair play to the tractor boy, he could have tried to influence the ref there.

Could have been sent off to be honest, for the reason studs are showing plus the pace when he is going in.
I understand why fans like hard tackles but its all about player safety now.

Great tackle, but lets hope the `cemented` comment doesn`t encourage Regan to steam in too much.

Seen enough of him over the past couple of years to know tackling is a big part of his game, unfortunately you have to get it spot on these days, or suffer the consequence.

Totally opposite view to me ,how old are you just out of interest ,just wondered if its a generation thing.

I'm 37, grew up on Dinosaur Dave's side so don't get me wrong I appreciate a good cruncher like the rest of us, but refs today are giving cards for anything slightly resembling a slide-tackle. I think Slater NOT getting a card for was the exception not the norm these days.

I was with a mate who is an Ipswich fan. His response was “ooof! that’s a proper tackle”. Says a lot about the game that we are talking about one tackle, but it reflected the differing levels of commitment between the two sets of midfielders.

Any older fans know that the Fleck and Slater tackles were normal tackles a few decades ago.

But the rules have now changed.

Any tackle that is deemed dangerous and out of control is now deemed a red card.
So by the letter of the law Flecks was a red but that Leeds defender should have also had a red with the challenge on Baldock.
Although Slaters tackle was similar to Flecks, it looks like there’s more control in the tackle, so not a red.

Just an addition to my post above, while we're seeing hardly any slide-tackling these days - the up-side to this is the quality of football in general IMO, is miles better than what it used to be.
We're all in awe of the way that United move the ball about, but looking at the Championship in general - the standard of play on the whole is far greater that when we left the division. I've noticed that players don't go haring after the ball as much and will allow opposition players more time on the ball. Most teams we face can actually pass the ball about a bit and defenders now are more comfortable on the ball; you hardly see any panicked slicing into row Z that you used to. All down to the lack of crunching tackles in my view.

A red card every day of the week against a 'top' PL side. Probably a yellow against a beige PL side such as Stoke, WBA or Huddersfield.

Having seen Leroy Fer's red card this weekend then anything is possible in the future. It's conceivable that you could be red carded for even thinking about a tackle.

It looks more forceful and the run in to tackle him further out than the Fleck one if my mind/memory isnt deceiving me...and Fleck had the misfortune of slipping slightly with his which made it appear to be a 'dirty' tackle when the intention wasnt there, still just think it was a yellow at worst, plus the muppet he tackled made out it was bad by practically feigning a broken leg.

It was interesting to watch the whole of the 2001 derby in the 'memries' thread - judged by today's refereeing standards it could have ended up eight a side. Result apart, it wasn't a great match really, the industrial challenges meant that most of the players were just trying to get rid as fast as possible.

Wow that's a proper tackle from slater!!. fair play to the Ipswich player for just getting up and getting on with the game. I'm 48 and was used to seeing tackles like that when I was a kid on the kop. I can't stand to see the prem players perform a dying swan act when an opposing player brushes past them. I'm just wondering who taught slater to tackle like that?. I don't think it's wilder. It's gotta be Chris Morgan!!.

Shouldn't be, but we all know a PL player in that situation would've done more rolls that Mr Kipling, screamed like a banshee and his team mates surrounded the referee demanding the death penalty.
