We shouldn’t bother with ones for the future.

Thomas and him have been a waste of cash we could have used on first team
Perhaps there are two pots of cash. One for first team, a second for development players

Yeah bright spark.
Shall we scrap the academy then?

Where did I say anything remotely like this?

It has been widely acknowledged that we have an excellent first team that were flying and that our squad players aren’t as good (evidenced that Thomas Hennighan haven’t played barely)

My point was if we don’t have as big a budget use all we have to buy players that are good enough for first 11.

I said the same in 07 when Warnock was buying for the future.

Again I didn’t say that - we have the academy - my point is rather than buying 2 for the future 1 for the here and now would be of more benefit.

I disagree as I don't think you should underestimate the importance of planning for the future.

I don't know what fees we paid for both Thomas and Heneghan but generally 'ones for the future' cost less so it's reasonable to suggest that what we paid for both of them wouldn't have allowed us to buy one for the 'here and now'.

I've always liked the idea of being in the bush ......... ;):D:eek:

He's got a point though, I can only really think of Che Adams in recent times that was signed as one for the future and actually turned in to a first team player.

Cue someone proving me wrong with a long list of players to do just that.

For starters a little young lad called David Brooks was purchased from Man City.

Brooks is not one of our homegrown like Walker, DCL, Jags, Harry or Billy (The list goes on)

Somebody at the club purchased Brooks as “one for the future” and now he is one of our biggest assets.

In reality all our academy players are “one for the future” the club invest time and money into them and sometimes it pays off, sometimes it doesn't.

Of all the things the club has got wrong over the years, investing in stars of the future is not one of them.

We didn't buy Brooks Man City released him and we snapped him up ,similar situation to when we signed Jags.
It pays to revue what you g players are released by these big clubs (city, man Utd,
Chelsea ) they are usually short on patience and some quality players slip through the net.
Dean Smith was good at picking young players up when he was at Walsall.

You are correct, other than the fact we had Jagz from the age of 15, so I would always class Jags as one off our production line....but my point is that since 2004 we have been paying Brooks a wage (along with all the rest of the academy)... We invest money in them, like we have for Heneghan. why else would we give Brooks a contract if he was not seen as "one for the future" I can guarantee we didn't sign Brooks out of sympathy.

I'm trying to get across the point that buying (or even snapping up) young talent is part of our DNA it is one of the few things United get praised for outside of Sheffield. Truly bogles my mind that fans would moan about signing "one for the future" given our track record in developing young players. Also worth pointing out Wilder wanted Heneghan, that alone should be enough, but some still question it.

We bought a league two player for league two player cash.

I don’t see us getting a championship standard player for league two money!

Heneghan is 24 though, that's a bit different isn't it? Carruthers is the same age and he's been written off but at least he can make our squad.

I also class brooks as on of our own as spotting latent talent is part of the academy remit

He had 10 years at Manchester City's acadmey before we picked him up so I disagree. Either way, its brilliant thats Brooks is here with us now.

Brooks was released which also means that Man City have no entitlement to any profit from his transfer

Jake Wright was 33 (I think) when we signed him and he to turn into Jake “the unbeatable” Wright under Wilder. If anything, Heneghan only been 24 only strengthens the argument.

Wilder and Knill see potential in players. Obviously they are not going to get it right 100% of the time, but thats football.

I personally believe they will get a lot more “hits” than “misses”. Have some faith. They have earned it.
