There's been many a player sale derided on here which, with the gift of hindsight, was probably justified at the time.

Would United have been in the position we find ourselves in now without the sale of James Beattie?

Would Michael Tonge/Alan Quinn really be more effective in midfield?

Should we not have sold Simon Francis? (Only two years left for him to be in the England squad :lol

Which signings have you been outraged at when they occurred, but now realise that probably, it was for the best?

I was pretty mad at the Beattie sale when that happened. But ever since he has gone (minus a few weeks) we have been brilliant.

Yes and Yes. One of Monty/Quinn/Howard has been the weakest link all season (I know I really shouldn't be fishing for negatives at the moment because we're going great, but well.. you asked).

I think for me the Beattie sale made me pretty mad.

If you look it all, Beattie's sale and initial purchase are probably two of the best things that has happened to us since we were relegated.

The signing showed we meant business in getting back to the premiership, which robbo's tactics soon put paid to. The sale of JB, mean't that the rest of the team had to stop relying on Beatts to win us games, which consequently coincided with an upturn in our form.

I was pretty upset when Deano went the first time, especially as he was the first player I ever saw score a goal at the Kop end, in my first game in 1989.

Well, it didn't help that we were high in the table and that Deane went the same day as Fjortoft either. Alan Kelly was the one that really irked me, as well as Deane first time round.

The difference is that Kelly's transfer didn't make as big a difference as we thought, but Deane's probably cost us our place in the top flight.

So many. Mick Jones to Weeds, and Alan Birchenall same time, both 19 years old. If we had kept those two, what a partnership it would have been! Varadi and Simon Stainrod at 18 years sold at same time. Ridiculous. We even wanted to sell Jimmy Hagan to the Fowls, but he wouldnt go. It all makes Beattie sale not seem too bad, now.

What appears to have been a good sale but didnt seem to be at the time was Wayne Quinn to Newcastle. People were talking of him being a future England player but he just disappeared into the ether at Newcastle. Wonder what went wrong? We got good money for him, too.

Apprantly he now runs a caravan park in Cornwall.

The earliest sale i remember that i was really disappointed about was Keith Edwards back in 1986, although i did not fully appreciate the significence of flogging him to Leeds at 8 years old.

I was also disappointed with the sales of Martin Kuhl, Tony Agana, Brian Deane, Nathan Blake, Jan Aage Fjortoft, Brian Deane (the second time), David Holdsworth, Lee Morris, Dean Saunders, Marcelo, Marcus Bent, Michael Brown, Colin Kazim-Richards, and James Beattie. And all to differering levels

The one player i was glad to see go was Phil Jagielka as i watched him come through from a youngster at 17 years old to an absolute quality player and when we went down i wanted us to sell him to a decent premiership club for his own sake rather than taking him down to the Championship level and for it to damage his career. He gave us so much excellent service that it was only fair that we let him progress his career

The link to Simon Francis contains this particular bit of brilliance "he isnt Overated or over-hyped so dont come back with that one" which demonstrates that the commentator could have written all his footballing expertise on an ant's nadsack in big letters.

I also don't think the Tonge/Quinn partnership would have been too good. I seem to remember watching a certain Alan Quinn in a game not that long ago the we won, and he didn't do a deal in that one...

The two players whose sales really pissed me off though are Deane, twice, and Fjortoft.

Agree with this totally. Also content with the sale of Tonguey-albeit for differing reasons. We got a lot of money for something far from special
