Sheffield United - West Ham statement
Posted on: Mon 16 Mar 2009
Sheffield United and West Ham United have reached an out-of-court settlement with regard to the dispute between the two clubs - agreeing that it is time to move on and bring the matter to an end.

The agreement means the independent tribunal in relation to Carlos Tevez, chaired by Lord Griffiths, that was due to reconvene today (Monday, March 16) will no longer proceed.

In a joint statement, Sheffield United Chairman Kevin McCabe and West Ham United's Chief Executive Officer Scott Duxbury said:

"Both clubs are pleased to announce that a satisfactory settlement for compensation has been reached which brings the dispute between Sheffield United and West Ham to an end. The tribunal will not be resuming."

Mr McCabe said: "We are happy and satisfied with the settlement with West Ham. Throughout the finalisation of the terms for the agreement, the discussions were friendly, co-operative and in the best of spirit with both the Blades and Hammers advisory teams.

"We are two clubs with a fantastic footballing history who now want to move on and focus on the business of playing football - hopefully for us against the Hammers in the Premier League next season.

"We look forward to a positive ongoing relationship with West Ham at all levels."

Mr Duxbury said: "For everyone concerned, the time was right to draw a line under this whole episode.

"We have had very positive discussions over a number of days with Sheffield United and acknowledge their willingness to resolve this in the best interests of both clubs.

"This now allows us to concentrate on our immediate ambitions, which include a strong finish to the Premier League season and possible European qualification, without any negative impact on our long-term project.

"We wish Sheffield United well in their bid to secure promotion from the Championship."

group hug anyone? :)

I suspect a large chunk will be going towards our redevelopments + repaying debts.

I dont see any point in touching the Kop while we're in the championship.....

I can understand getting it ready for us to go back up, so its done. But I think we need to concentrate on getting their first.

Im not too bothered what gets spent on players, but the club should be in a position now, to not have to lower the wage bill as much, with this guaranteed income.

If Halford is happy to stay, he should be our first signing.

midseason 'friendly' at our place then lads?

I think we should donate some of it to the mental health charities down south...

One fan, speaking on the KUMB.com forums said: "I can't help feeling that it tarnishes us. We will be labelled cheats through no fault of our own.

"More than anything the travesty of what is perceived as justice is what galls most. Taking this all into account, I find it unconscionable that we have to pay even one penny in damages, whether or not 'no admission of guilt' is attached."

A fellow member added: "This is very difficult to swallow. Through all this I've always felt that those whining hypocrites would never get a penny - exactly what they deserve.

"The loathing they reserve for us is bordering on the ridiculous, and any monies we pay out to them will only go to further that sentiment, and make us look more guilty in the eyes of everyone else."

Lets hope Samuels is chocking on his morning cornflakes pork pies as he reads the news.

Nice to see a "gesture" to those of us that renewed our season ticket during the Premiership season?

25m between 25 thousand = a grand each!

OR.... I wonder if Mr Mcabe will settle for me giving him about half of what he is demending for my ticket this year....

Oh sorry just having a little dream about fairness

Haha... my Nannan had got it into her head that we'd get half price season tickets if we got the payout.

Me: No Nannan... we were going to get half price season tickets if we were promoted last season. We weren't so we don't.

Her: Well I still feel swindled.

Me: Why?

Her: Because we were promised half price season tickets.

Me: Yes Nannan... but... oh... never mind!

Any oral cuddles involved with that?

I have nothing against the guy... but this is the most frightening thing I have ever seen in my life...

You don't want that image, the thoughts of Fatty and the term "oral cuddles" to haunt you at night do you?!

The West Ham fans don't want it to be seen as an admission of guilt?

If your club hadn't been caught lying then they wouldn't be paying the money out, would they?

It's an admission of guilt because they are guilty. The only reason they have coughed out of court is because they are afraid that a court might just make them pay a hell of a lot more. Tough shit, get your money out.

To be honest, I think this has more to do with the Icelandics trying to sell the club and who would want to buy it with this still going on? It's just a way to get it over and done with and both sides can retreat without losing too much face though the damage there has already been done. Certain people think West Ham are lying cheats and others think Sheffield United are wingeing money grabbing bastards, cant change that now. Just glad it's over with.

Like you lot though, I agree with the naivety of the statement about some kind of relationship between our two clubs, cant see that happening for a long, long time!;)

I don't know about that, I mean we've got a very satisfactory relationship going right now. The sort where you write a cheque and we go to the bank with a paying-in slip.

I'd have thought you lot would be queuing up to orally cuddle Kevin McCabe ;)

I've got nothing against Tevez or the ordinary West Ham fans in the stand or those who come on here and sensibly raise their points... we're never going to agree but at least we can disagree and be civil about it.

The people I certainly have issues with are Duxbury, Martin Samuel and your fellow fans who come on here on the wind-up... saying we're pathetic for going on about it but blah blah blah.

I think we're as sick of hearing about it as you are.

Yeah. So what do you think you will be spending the couple of million a year for the next few years on then? Must be a bit gutting seeing you were all hoping to get around 40 million in one lump. :D

I think the plan all along was to pay off some of our bank loans... so we don't end up in the tangle West Ham are in! :)

I wasn't expecting to get anything... not this long after the event. An interesting question now will be, what do you expect the Premier League to do about it all to save face?

Yeah, agreed to a certain extent. To be honest, even a lot of West Ham fans get annoying when they keep banging on about the issue. I really just came over here because I noticed that excuse for a Hammer embarresing himself yet again by spamming other forums so thought I'd warn you and save a bit of face for other Hammers who are nothing like that, you get twats at any club. Just thought I'd have my say on the Tevez thing while I was here seeing that nothing else at Sheffield United really holds much interest to me right now.
Martin Samuel is a through and through West Ham supporter writing in a tabloid so it's hardly suprising that he's going to show a good level of bias, no different to a lot of these kinds of pundits and journalists, no different to Sean Bean spouting his mouth off about West Ham too. Of course you're not going to like what he writes, that's the point. Controvesy sells papers. ;)

I think the Premier league has ballsed this all up from word go and there isn't a lot they can do to save any face. Out of this whole sorry affair, I think they have lost the most face. How they can fine us, then give us clearance to play Tevez and then change their mind yet again after he has played is unbelievable.

And dont believe all you have read in the papers, West Ham really arn't in a tangle, yes the owners arn't going to put money in with all the stuff going on with their other businesses but West Ham really dont have any crippling debts. Hopefully now Tevezgate is over, they will find a buyer for the club and they can go on their merry way leaving the club in a better state that it was when they took over from Brown.

Am I the only who has noticed there has been no statement regarding how much is changing hands, or how much per year, all this ranting is pure speculation. IMHO Mr McCabe has done an agreement with WH to make sure there is less bad feeling between the clubs and bring and end to all this bollocks, fair play to him.....as long as we go and buy Halford who is nearly as good in many different positions as Jags!

It's not really. When new evidence comes to light, further avenues of investigation can open up.

Pretty much agree with you on this though if I was in your position, I'd feel rather let down by McCabe. He's dragged all this through for so long and now agrees to a settlement far less that what he was saying you should get. Of course Blades supporters will say that West Ham agreed with this because they knew they would get fined a lot more. It's all pure speculation anyway and even though it appears both sides did it so save face, I dont think anyone will be 100% happy about this outcome. I'm just glad it's all over and we can carry on concentrating on the football. The last couple of years as a Hammer and it's felt like you need to be a bloody lawyer to talk about our club, sure you lot probably feel the same way. ;)

I know what you mean about let down, apart from a couple of things regarding the sale of James Beattie I can't fault him, there are some who would still complain if he gave us season ticket holders a free one next year. When money has come into the club it hasn't been wasted (yep a couple of players it hasn't worked out for and we do need a bit of a clearout) but there is no worries of doing a Leeds or Charlton, we have done nearly 2 seasons and are pushing to go up, what about the others?? Some don't see the long game
