Taking my blue and white specs off.both clubs should be in the premier league and not just surviving but progressing. I'm sure the teams would rather have both Sheffield teams in the league than the likes of Bournemouth etc.and I mean no disrespect to them at all.

I'll provide the disrespect if you like...

Completely disagree, neither 'should' be in the premier league. Both clubs have been poorly run by the owners, both have had too many managers and only now are both clubs getting some stability. You get there because you deserve it. Neither deserve to be there until at least, the end of this season.

More of a chance without him, that's what I'm saying.
Possibly but the difference between the chances is extremely small and easily out weighed by the prospect of seeing the type of investment we need to get to where we want to be.

That's rather glib and condescending.

Sorry if it seems that way. Let me amplify. Foreign owners without football backgrounds are prone to seek advice from consultants, you know the Sven Jorgen Erikssen types who take a wedge for stating the obvious. Trouble is the obvious to them is usually big change that earns them more commission. It's happening in all businesses not just football but our sport has the ability to seem more mysterious than most ordinary businesses.

Shit happens to football fans as you know Bush.

Basset has no affinity to Utd ,we were one of his many employers as were Forest and Dingles. He has a place for Wimbledon but his team are Chelsea. How do I know because I had a private dinner with him with 7 other guys and asked him the question ,I was the only Blade present. He went down in my estimation that day ,very disappointing.

I'm surprised to hear this. He seems to come back to The Lane quite often and my impression is that he gets on very well with KM.

I'm not his number one fan, as you might have heard, but he does seem to have a continuing association with us that's not there with his other former clubs?

Just a light-hearted intervention, Woody, but I'll keep it up for you. I am so dogged and committed I see myself as the forum Monty.

Don't swallow that Pinchy. You are a WUM and you are not "light hearted".

He worked on finding us a manager once :

I wanted O'Driscoll at the time so that's how I remember it.

S O'D would have been crap too maybe as it turns out. It's not easy believe it or not.

Might have been Weir though.

Disagree. Did you even think about it when you were in full throttle campaign against McCabe?

One of our greatest managers, being just too young to have seen Harris the best record in my lifetime and gave us some great times.

His brand of football wouldn't work now the game has changed beyond all recognition, but to use that against him is churlish.

Fair enough mate

Thing about Bassett is I love him as a Blade as much as any Blade.

Ditto Wilder even before this past year. There maybe only about 30 in that class for me.

Don't anybody state he is a 'flawed character'. If he is flawed we are flawed.

Think about it folks. If Bassett mentioned a merger ...............? He's not daft. I didn't watch him but he's not daft and could even be part of an investment project team should it ever happen.

There's no real precedent though. Whilst many of the modern owners are very naive, they're not stupid. There's a difference.

I'm not saying it's impossible but I'm saying it's highly unlikely.

None of those have involved a merger in their business plan. Their business plans were relatively sound; buy a club, invest it it to get into the PL and benefit from the huge increase in income and capital value. It was the execution of the plan that failed them.

What possible advantage would there be buying two Sheffield clubs at £40-50m each when you could buy one, invest £50m, stand a decent chance of going up and getting £100m+ in TV revenue alone. For the extra 20k fans you might attract (but won't)? What's that worth compared with other income streams in the PL?

No merger but naivety in the extreme, that was my point.

Good points re the merger but this game of ours is going more and more away from its roots. No need to say how and where we are not in there yet.

Any 30 year old consultant could make a presentation to prove how economy of scale in twice the market would reap huge profits. A Saudi Prince and a Thai fish canner would swallow the whole story while passing through London on their way to other such presentations. Just nod and it's through. No Blades loyalty, culture, heritage or simple concern.

No, they really couldn't. To get to pitch to those kind of investors you need credibility and anyone with credibility wouldn't try to put such a ludicrous deal together.
