Have we ever had as good a midfield three as Duffy, Fleck and Coutts.

They get better and better. Totally bossed the midfield today, so comfortable on the ball.

Fleck offers for it when he has two men glued to it and still manages to retain possession and pick a pass. The guy is a Rolls Royce.

I thought that this was going to be a homo-erotic post involving them Wilder and big Clayton.

Questions before the season as to if they could make the step up. Think the last few games with duffy in the side has shown that they can still boss games. Coutts class again today

And I'll never know how Duffy hasn't been at this level all his career!

3 rejects Burton/Derby/Coventry

3 rejects Burton/Derby/Coventry
these 3 epitomise the Wilder way
unearth players that play well in a set position within his set up
absolutely no need to piss money up a wall on alternative reasonable players with over inflated valuations

The Aldi shopping metaphore is ideal
we can bake a lovely promotion cake with Aldis own ingredients
no need to pay 4 or 5 times as much for waitrose flour
Aldis can rise just as much

Could see it at last season's Charlton game and have said it a few times since but been knocked back by "Brown/McCall" and "Currie/SALMONS!!!!!" but - I don't care.
This is the best midfield and best footballing team we've ever had - and I DO include the team managed by my namesake :)

Posted a v similar quote after derby game...we are blessed to have these 3 in our team, we haven't had 3 midfielders in the same team as good as these, ever, at times today I was lost for words how good those 3 work together..enjoy the ride and appreciate what we have cos being a Blade at the moment is extra special

Was expecting Debbie does Dallas when opening this thread.

Class is class....there was never any doubt they couldn't hack it in this league....same as there's no doubt for me they could do it on the next level too.
Those two should be pulling the strings for the sweaty s' against England.

Best United midfield I have seen. Yes we have had other good midfield units at a higher level but these lads just ooze class.

If you had to have a threesome with any two females in the whole entire universe...

Which other Blades player would pick alongside Wilder?

Sorry, disagree. I'm your age and at present the Harris team beats it. It also has to be considered that this "formation" was unknown in that era. What is however impressive is that this midfield can even be compared with that team. That is something I never thought would occur. Three astute signings in January and I may change my view.

The formation was unknown because the skill and fitness levels weren't up to it.
It was essentially a case of beat your man and then move the ball on.
With the best will in the world, none of the players of that era could manage the constant pressing, along with the persistent and accurate close passing shown by the present lot.
I appreciated the Harris era, particularly the games at start of our first season back in Div 1 (as was) but the quality on show know is much more 'total football' than we've seen before :)

I agree that this midfield trio is superb.

However to compare this midfield to John Harris's we need to see them perform against the top flight teams.

I'll believe it when we play a team as good as Arsenal were in 1973 and we are beating them 5-0 after being three up after 15 minutes and Coutts or Fleck or Duffy sits on the ball and gestures to the opposition to try and take it.

See my avatar....

They're superb. I really couldn't ask for anything more from our midfield. All proper footballers. Even Coutts really digs in and battles nowadays - defensively I thought he was excellent today, his positioning especially.

Fleck's proving to be totally at ease at this level and we need to be sorting a new contract for him ASAP.

Playing centrally has given Duffy a new lease of life. He looks like he's always played there, and thanks to that positional change he looks more than comfortable at Championship level.

Just shows how slow players were back then - and how much space there was in midfield :)

As one who saw that from TC, especially in response to Alan Ball doing it previously, it is a memory that willl live with me forever.

Sadly they'd probably get hauled up for bringing the game into disrepute these days if they showboated as brazenly as that.
