Yes, because he was paying particular interest to that deal. He tweeted about 10 o clock that there was 'still a good chance'

Are you choosing to believe yourself over a respected reporter for whether you like it or not one of the biggest papers in the UK?

So he said there was 'still a good chance'? That doesn't sound to me like we were offering to get the player on the cheap. It also doesn't disprove the idea that we'd had an offer accepted and that Fleetwood were waiting on a replacement.

But his tweet afterwards about us 'having several offers rejected does'
We offered our valuation, didn't match what Fleetwood wanted. End of story.

Jesus, I feel like I'm on a merry-go-round.

At least you've got Tunstall Fred hanging out of your arse for likes, bless him :)

So you know all that from what one person on twitter has said? You do know that people often make shit up on twitter don't you? Even 'respected journalists' as it helps to boost their numbers.

So you disagree with Wilder's valuation? How much did Fleetwood want? How much would you have been happy with us spending?

I've seen you do this before. Someone on here mentions a name, it gains a bit of traction and all of a sudden you act as though this player is God's gift to football and you spitting the dummy out when we don't sign them. Next you'll be telling me you've seen every game he's played and he's exactly the type of player we need whilst reeling off a load of generic attributes that he apparently has. I remember you wetting yourself about Ebanks-Landell last season and calling him the Messiah, before doing a complete U-turn just a week later.

Why don't you tell me again just how good Ryan Leonard is? Despite you only seeing him play twice.

So Frustrating get off to a great start all can see add some power and pace and we would be around top 6 in Jan ready for a push with maybe 1 or 2 more players but no we will struggle along upfront then try to buy a striker or 2 to keep us up .. no blame what so ever on Wilder but the club has shown no ambition here they are obviously happy to tread water hoping to spend as little as possible hoping for Wilder to wave a magic wand . Can't sign a striker in form now well they go for even more money in Jan window so what's that tell us ? At least 2 strikers should have been brought in this week both with pace what happened to that J Sinclair ?
Agent pulled out of deal cos he isn't guaranteed first team football same for that quina lad from wet spam they both have the same agent

One person on twitter who happens to be an actual real life journalist.

Cole is definitely not gods gift, he's not actually THAT good but he's got plenty of potential and pace and a good eye for goal.
We should've secured someone better than Cole, we'd had 3 months to do so but we hadn't and he was the only one left by the looks of it.
Not a panic buy, but definitely worth a purchase for a club who like ourselves need to make a gamble.

Ebanks Landell I said wouldn't be good enough for the championship... He's at MK dons now. So.

You can take interest in football outside of Bramall Lane you know pal, you might just enjoy it.

'Plenty of pace and a good eye for goal'. Ahh, there's those generic attributes I mentioned.

So he's not that good but you're getting all upset that we've not spent all of our money on him?

Who would you have signed instead? You know everything so I'm sure you can think of at least one name.

I'll ask again because you obviously missed it. So you disagree with Wilder's valuation? How much did Fleetwood want? How much would you have been happy with us spending?

You said Ebanks-Landell wasn't good enough for us in League 1, you wanted us to get rid. Just a week after saying how good he was. I'll let you deny it if you like, you know I pulled you up on it at the time though.

It's also worth pointing out that even with Cole's 'good eye for a goal' he's got a goal scoring record of a goal in every 4.3 games whereas Donaldson has a record of a goal in every 2.75 games.

Hanson's record is a goal in every 3.8 games, for comparative purposes.

Dear oh dear - what a depressing read the pages of this thread leading up to 11pm last night are.

So many people it seems think recruiting players is easy (as easy as when playing Football Manager) and the club have limitless funds to throw around. It's easy to spend someone else's money

Of course in an ideal world some of the clubs other targets (CM, Winger) would have been acquired but all in all, the squad is much stronger than it was at the end of last season. Imagine how the supporters of Brentford are feeling today.
You've no idea what we offered or what we tried to do.
Neither do you . It's pretty obvious we didn't back Tuffty and stump up the cash . I also maybe wrong along with all the reports coming out we didn't agree a fee .

No I don't but i'm not the one getting upset about something I don't know about.

It's obvious we didn't back Tufty? Is it? How much did we offer? Was that equal to/more than/less than what Wilder would've wanted to spend on the player?

How do you know that it wasn't Wilder who was unwilling to offer more money? He's said before that he won't spend more than he thinks a player is worth.

EDIT: I've just seen this, which doesn't make it 'pretty obvious'. http://www.thestar.co.uk/sport/foot...ho-we-sign-unlike-some-of-my-rivals-1-8731797

Please explain why it's pretty obvious that CW wasn't backed when he is central to and has final say on all acquisitions and divestments. Do you feel the Board should have gone over CW's head and offered more than CW's view of targets' value e.g. Leonard, Cole in order to land them?

Why don't you all stop crying about it. Wilder wanted him so did a lot of us. Our board clearly just wouldn't stump up the extra bit of cash to get him. We had 2mill rejected for Egan and they wouldn't bid a mill for Cole... Fucking joke. but its done now , move on. Cry about it again in January when hes worth 3-4Million and we can't afford him

It seems as though the goalposts were moved very late with this one. Maybe Fleetwood were quoted a higher fee for their replacement? All of a sudden they want a extra 500k. I'm surprised Hanson wasn't used in this, maybe he was and they didn't want him. Who knows! We've got Donaldson, if he can get back to the player of 12-18 months ago, even for 1 or half a season until January, he will score and take a lot of the pressure off Billy. Maybe he doesn't score that many but might create or occupy defenders for other people to be free. Who cares as long as we win and play well.

Not getting upset ? Don't know how many posts you have done today but it's a lot more than me . No point arguing clearly then Tuffty has gone on about wanting players in recent weeks saying in numerous interviews he's pushing the board every day and he will keep pushing then it all went wrong on last day also Tuffty mentioned lots of times he likes his business done early so I don't think he will have wanted to do any business on the final day he would have liked to have done his business before he also stated he's had his striker targets for a long time so surely he wanted Cole and Sinclair but wasn't backed by the board price and agents fees will go up when your doing business at the last minute .

Again, how do you know he wasn't backed by the board. Unless you're expecting the board to pay unrealistic prices that is, and that's something Wilder has said he doesn't want to do.

How many managers do you think like to do their business at the very last minute? Do you genuinely think our board are different in this regard?

But that sample takes Donaldson't prime into account which he has now passed. Cole hasn't reached his yet.

It does but it also shows that Donaldson has an 'eye for a goal'. It was suggested that we should be signing better players than Cole and I'm suggesting we might have done.

Unless you have insights within the club that the rest of us are not do not, do you seriously think they intentionally planned for the the recruitment of players to be undertaken at the last minute? Do you not think that factors such as dependant transfers, over inflated transfer fee and salary demands may have been influencing factors for Utd and pretty much every other club? Do you not think the squad is stronger than it was in May?

Perhaps you think you're better placed than CW, Paul Mitchell and club negotiators to assess players' value and negotiate transfers and terms instead of them? If so, then maybe you should approach the club to offer your services ahead of the Jan transfer window.

Maybe get some more practice on FM first though :)
I don't have any insights into the club and you've come out with some dreamt up bollocks there but planning is all about being intentional in a way, the club shouldn't have left it this long and there's a shitload of players out there for the scouts to have a look at, they should've had years worth of experience to have a gauge on players already but let's say they've had three months to recognise the players we need then they've left it too late to get players over the line, it's pretty simple really.

The only way I can see possible that we waited until the last minute to get a striker over the line is that we didn't think we needed a striker until we got an injury or suspension which if true is very naive at best, we've needed a striker to take some of the workload and pressure of Billy since before the season started.

The squad is stronger as a whole, that I agree with.

And I don't play on FM................anymore, that was a teenage thing years ago until I learned how to knock one out to midget porn. ;)

My take is that Donaldson has been a good player over the years but I'm concerned by his age. Cole is at the other end and only shown flashes but there's potential to improve and given Wilder's enhancement of players like Fleck, JOC, Brooks etc. I'd have preferred a player we could develop as an asset. I wanted us to sign Donaldson 6 years ago when we got relegated and he was a free agent, 27 year old and would have been on less money than now. Now, I'm not so sure. Hopefully he can give us decent service for season or so. I guess we'll see.

It can't be proven but it can be inferred from the assumption that all managers want the best players they can get and we've signed lower league players and 2 older championship players deemed surplus to requirements. Without knowing exactly what goes on behind the scenes we can't say for certain but it doesn't take a huge leap to believe that he's been working with a bottom 6 budget (which some might say is to be expected when newly promoted but that doesn't tie in with McCabe's ST sale pitch).

You mean the 'generic attributes' that Cole has? His scoring record for a 22 year old is impressive.

Adam Armstrong, Sinclair, Joe Mason. All would've been on my hitlist before Cole but once Cole was the only one left I can't see why we wouldn't just stump up the cash.

Wilder's valuation, dear me. You really are going to try and turn this into a me vs Wilder debate aren't you? Sometimes you have to pay more than a players valuation, especially on deadline day when the other club will struggle for a replacement.

Say what you like about Ebanks Landell, I don't really care. I rated him for a while, he was great right side of a 3. His performances nosedived after he signed his new contract and never recovered. End of.

The irony is strong with this one.

He's scored 11 goals in 53 games for Fleetwood, it's not that impressive.

I'm not trying to turn it into anything. If you disagree with Wilder, as it seems you do, you should be brave enough to say so.

But that sample takes Donaldson't prime into account which he has now passed. Cole hasn't reached his yet.
But Donaldson (33) has played the last 3 seasons in the Championship and scored 33 goals in that time.
Cole (22) has spent the last 6 seasons in Division 1 and has scored - oh! - 30 goals in that time

I think we can all agree that it's done with now and we have a decent player for the level we're at for this season and possibly next season. We'll get by, reassess in January and hopefully stay free of injuries especially to the more influential players.

For a 22 year old, making a lot of appearances off the bench his record is impressive.
Wilder doesn't negotiate, he says what he thinks a players worth, bravo. May have to pay a little more to sign him that's down to the board and negotiating team. 'Brave enough to do so' fuck me.

Didn't see you make another smart comment about the other targets I would've, did they suffice? Were they good enough in your eyes?

You can't compare a 30 year old to a teenager, and I don't know where you've got 6 seasons from
