I copied this off one of our local teams board.........

We have the most talented forwards in the division and we are rubbish.

I think you may guess where that came from but looking at the division there doesn't seem to be that many top class strikers around.
We are getting desperate for reinforcements up top but it's going to be a struggle to get someone decent to play alongside Bill.

Assombalonga , Mendez-Laing and the lad at Norwich seem the best around at the moment.

Who do you rate the top strikers in the Championship?

yeah I asked the question 50 minutes ago and there has been a resounding silence since.
There really aren't any 20 goal a season strikers left in the championship bar those who've been tried in the Prem and found it a bridge too far.

The best 5 are Assombalonga, Kodjia, Zohore, Hooper (unfortunately) and Abel Hernandez.

Notable mentions for the off form Jordan Rhodes (whoops), Scott Hogan and Lasse Vibe.

The new lad at Leeds, Lassoga should score goals. As well as Fulham's Rui Fonte.

Here's a list of the top scorers in the Championship...

http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/championship/top-scorers

You can scroll that if you like and pick out a few names and tell us how you've always rated them and followed their careers closely?

Some of the names on there are players that have been lambasted on here as being useless. It's interesting to read some of the comments about Mendez-Laing for example. Danny Wilson brought him in on loan for us and most were glad to see the back of him - but now, he's a world-beater at this level. Isn't that strange?

I think the thing is, players go through good and bad patches in their career, particularly strikers. If they're on good form and at a club that are doing well they can appear to be great. But put them in a team that is struggling and the same players can get dragged down by that.

To be honest, the best non-Sheff Utd player I've seen so far in the Championship this season, is probably that guy Jota of Brentford. He's only small and looks a bit of a weakling, but when he gets the ball he makes things happen. I liked him a lot. But I don't think he's on that top scorers list. And I'm afraid that strikers only usually get noticed for goals.

the one and only Billy Sharp 5 games 4 goals

From the Sun via SkySports Transfer Centre - Paper Talk
  • "Sheffield Wednesday want to offload flop Jordan Rhodes with Sunderland and Wolves keen."

This gets better and better. For Rhodes to move they will have to match his wages or more likely, he will sit tight. The pigs have at least a £17m liability on their hands - his transfer fee plus 3 years wages.

One of the best all round strikers especially when fully fit is Assombalonga. Kenneth Zohore is a handful too, could he make the step up though? possibly.

For me one of, if not the best finisher at this level is Gary Hooper, cracking player it's just a shame he plays for the other lot.

Reckon bill is easily the most underrated , he was 55/1 to be top scorer at the start of the season wonder what he is now can't see him not getting 20 if he plays every game.

Wednesday have probably got 4 of the best strikers in the league but they play dull 1-0 football

Kodjia at Villa is very good but injured. Same for Hernandez at Hull. Assombalonga is an obvious one and I really like Gestede as a target man at this level. Think that Diediou or whatever he’s called at Bristol looks quite good. Zahore is an excellent forward for this level too IMO. Big and strong as well as being quick and decent with his feet. A great combination. NML more of a winger than a striker but a goal threat nonetheless. Rhodes has proven to be good at this level but doesn’t seem to suit the pigs’ football. That Billy Sharp at Sheffield United looks decent too.

Jota is a midfielder. This isn’t the first time that you’ve intimated that people on here know nothing about players outside of SUFC and only base “opinions” on Wiki stats and top scorer lists. Believe it or not, whilst you may know fuck all about all football beyond the constraints of S2, some people do actually take notice of the sport more generally watching highlights shows and sometimes even full matches where they get to see other players play. Some people might even see enough of a player to form an opinion on them.

I take your point re NML but the fact is he was very young when he played for us. He’s been improving for a while now. He looked dangerous down at Spotland in the 3-3 draw last season and scored the equaliser for them. I still personally think he looks awkward and ungainly when he plays but he seems to be effective and has thus far done better than I thought he would at this level.

Martin Braithwaite at Boro could be another one. Was a regular scorer for Toulouse in Ligue 1 and is quick and tricky. Patrick Bamford is also a very good player who just needs to regain a bit of form and confidence.

Ross McCormack is up there when he sorts his head out.

Leo Bonatini at Wolves has started well and should be good if he's their main striker.

Nelson Oliveira is a decent all round forward.

If Chris Martin fancies turning up again he's among the best.

And I should think Sam Gallagher is up there too judging by the ridiculous amount of interest in him this summer.

There really aren't that many outstanding strikers left in this league so the half decent ones are automatically in the £10m bracket.

I've always rated Hooper pretty highly. Shame about his choice of employer.

Had not seen much of zahore before this season - but was impressed with how good he was with his feet.

Really good technically while still being a physicall imposing and quick threat. We could do won someone in his mold imo.

Let's look at it from another angle.

If you could choose from a whole plethora of championship strikers, or have Billy Sharp playing for the Blades this season, who would you choose?

You can keep your Assombalongas, Kodijas and Zohores, Billy Sharp is the perfect fit for us.
